Chapter 6: The Woman Who Stayed Silent
My mother denied it before anyone even accused her.
That was the first thing that scared me.
She saw the photograph in my father’s hand.
She saw Michael standing beside another person.
And before Dad could ask a single question, she said:
“Daniel, you need to understand.””
Not “What is this?””
Not “Where did you get that?””
Just:
“You need to understand.””
People only said that when they were already preparing an explanation.
Dad stared at her.
“Were you involved?””
Mom’s face fell.
I had never seen her look so small.
“Daniel…”
“Were you?””
The silence answered before she did.
I felt something break inside me.
Because this wasn’t just about my father anymore.
This was about the woman who raised me.
The person I trusted most.
“Mom?””
She looked at me.
And the pain in her eyes almost made me wish I hadn’t asked.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
I stepped back.
“Find out what?””
She looked at Ethan.
Then at Dad.
Then finally at me.
“That I knew.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Ethan laughed once.
A humorless sound.
“You knew.””
Mom nodded.
“I knew about Claire.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I didn’t know about everything.””
“But you knew enough.””
Nobody defended her.
Not even Dad.
“Tell me the truth,” he said.
Mom sat down.
“I found out about Claire after we got married.””
Dad looked confused.
“How?””
“Michael told me.””
The room went silent.
“He came to me because he was worried about you.””
Dad shook his head.
“No.””
“He said Claire was trying to destroy your life.””
“That’s not true.””
“I know that now.””
Her voice cracked.
“But back then, I believed him.””
I stared at her.
“You believed someone without asking Dad?””
She looked at me.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
That answer hurt more than I expected.
Because it was honest.
Mom looked at Ethan.
“I didn’t know you existed.””
Ethan’s face hardened.
“But you knew she was pregnant.””
“Yes.””
“And you still stayed.””
Mom looked down.
“I was young.””
“So was my mother.””
That sentence silenced everyone.
Claire looked away.
She understood.
She knew what it felt like to be young and powerless.
Dad walked toward the table.
“You knew she was carrying my child.””
Mom nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe she left.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I thought she did.””
“You never asked her?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Mom covered her face.
“Because I was scared the answer would change everything.””
Dad stepped back.
“It should have.””
The pain in his voice was worse than anger.
Because he wasn’t yelling.
He was mourning.
The life he could have had.
The son he could have raised.
The years he could never get back.
Ethan stood.
“I need air.””
Nobody stopped him.
I followed.
Outside, the sky was gray.
The kind of weather that matched everything happening inside.
“You okay?”” I asked.
He smiled slightly.
“That’s a strange question.””
“I know.””
He looked at the street.
“I don’t even know what I’m supposed to feel.””
“You don’t have to decide right away.””
He was quiet.
Then:
“Do you hate her?””
I looked back at the house.
My mother.
My father.
A family that suddenly felt unfamiliar.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s the worst part.””
“What?””
“When someone hurts you, it’s easier if they’re just a bad person.””
I looked at him.
“But what if they’re not?””
He nodded.
“Exactly.””
Later that evening, Dad found something else.
A bank record.
Hidden inside an old box.
Michael had paid Claire money.
Monthly payments.
For years.
Dad stared at the papers.
“He paid her?””
Claire nodded.
“I refused at first.””
“Why did you accept?””
“Because I had a child.””
Ethan looked away.
Dad’s hands shook.
“He wasn’t helping you.””
“No.””
“He was paying you to stay away.””
Claire nodded.
The truth was finally complete.
Michael hadn’t just hidden information.
He had built an entire fake reality.
But one question remained.
Why?
Why would someone destroy his own brother’s chance at happiness?
Dad found the answer that night.
Inside Michael’s old belongings.
A journal.
At first, nobody wanted to read it.
Then Dad opened the first page.
And within minutes, his face changed.
“What?””
He looked at us.
“He was jealous.””
“Of you?”” I asked.
Dad nodded slowly.
“He thought I had everything.””
Claire frowned.
“But why?””
Dad turned the journal around.
One sentence was underlined.
*Daniel always gets chosen.*
I felt a chill.
Because this wasn’t about love.
It wasn’t about protection.
It was about obsession.
Then Dad turned another page.
And found something that made him stop breathing.
A photograph fell out.
A photograph of Michael.
And beside him…
Was Ethan’s mother.
But the date on the back was impossible.
Because it was taken years after Michael supposedly cut contact with Claire.

And written beneath it were four words:
*“The plan continues tomorrow.””*
