Chapter 7: The Plan
The photograph changed everything.
Not because it proved Michael had lied.
We already knew that.
It changed everything because it proved he never stopped.
He hadn’t made one terrible decision.
He had spent years controlling the lives of people around him.
Dad sat at the kitchen table for hours.
The journal was open in front of him.
Page after page.
A record of someone who believed he was the hero of his own story.
“He really thought he was saving me,” Dad whispered.
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“He thought he owned your life.””
Nobody argued.
Because she was right.
The next morning, we drove to Michael’s old house.
He had passed away five years earlier, but his belongings had been stored in a family storage unit.
Dad had never wanted to go through them.
Now he had no choice.
The room smelled like dust and old paper.
Every box contained pieces of a life nobody understood.
Ethan found the first clue.
A folder.
Inside were copies of letters.
His father’s letters.
The ones Claire never received.
Ethan picked one up.
His hands shook.
“He wrote these?””
Dad nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan read quietly.
Then his expression changed.
“He asked about me.””
Dad looked away.
“Every month.””
That hurt more than anything.
Because Ethan had spent his life believing he was unwanted.
And somewhere in a box, proof existed that he had been loved.
Just not delivered.
Then I found something.
A small notebook.
Inside were dates.
Names.
Phone numbers.
And one name appeared again and again.
My mother’s.
I froze.
“Dad.””
Everyone turned.
I handed him the notebook.
His face went pale.
Mom took a step back.
“I didn’t know about that.””
Dad looked at her.
“But your number is here.””
“I don’t know why.””
Ethan looked at the pages.
“Maybe you weren’t just a victim.””
Mom looked hurt.
But she didn’t deny it.
Then the phone rang.
Dad answered.
It was a lawyer.
Someone representing Michael’s estate.
He had found something in the legal documents.
Something that needed to be discussed immediately.
We met him that afternoon.
The lawyer placed a folder on the table.
“Your brother left instructions.””
Dad frowned.
“Instructions for what?””
The lawyer hesitated.
“Regarding Ethan.””
Everyone went still.
Ethan leaned forward.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
The lawyer opened the folder.
“Michael created a document years ago.””
Dad looked confused.
“What kind of document?””
“A guardianship proposal.””
My stomach tightened.
The lawyer continued.
“He planned to legally control Ethan’s future if anything happened to Claire.””
“That’s impossible.””
“It’s all here.””
Ethan stared at the papers.
“He wanted custody of me?””
The lawyer nodded.
Dad looked sick.
“Why?””
The lawyer answered carefully.
“Because Michael believed you were irresponsible.””
The anger in Dad’s face was immediate.
“He stole my son and then planned to take him legally?””
The lawyer didn’t respond.
Because there was nothing to say.
Then Ethan noticed something.
A signature.
A date.
A witness.
He pointed.
“Who signed this?””
The lawyer looked down.
“Your mother.””
Everyone turned to Mom.
Her face went white.
“I never signed that.””
“You did.””
“No.””
She grabbed the paper.
Then stopped.
Because she recognized it.
A memory.
A moment.
“I…”
Dad looked at her.
“What?””
Mom sat down.
“I remember.””
Nobody moved.
“Michael brought me documents years ago.””
“What did he tell you?””
“That they were insurance papers.””
The room went silent.
“You signed without reading them?””
Mom started crying.
“I trusted him.””
Ethan laughed quietly.
“Everyone trusted him.””
The words cut through the room.
Because they were true.
Michael had built his entire plan on one thing.
People believing the version of him they wanted to believe.
The lawyer closed the folder.
“There is one more thing.””
Dad looked up.
“What?””
The lawyer placed a final envelope on the table.
“Michael left this specifically for Ethan.””
Ethan stared at it.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
He opened it slowly.
Inside was a letter.
The first line made his face change.
*Ethan, if you are reading this, it means Daniel finally found out the truth.*
Dad stood.
“How would he know?””
Nobody answered.
Ethan continued reading.
Then he stopped.
His hands started shaking.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He looked up.
May you like
And whispered:
“He says Daniel wasn’t the only person he lied to.””
