Chapter 1: The Question Before Prom
“Dad, what’s your mother’s name?””
The question came out so suddenly that I thought I had misheard him.
My father wasn’t looking at me. He wasn’t looking at the camera in Mom’s hand or the flowers on the dining table or the dress I had spent months saving for.
He was staring at my boyfriend like he had just opened a door and found a ghost standing on the other side.
“Dad?”” I laughed awkwardly.
“Seriously?””
Nothing.
The smile that had been on his face only seconds earlier was gone.
My boyfriend, Ethan, shifted beside me. His hand was still holding mine, but his fingers had tightened.
“Mr. Carter,” Ethan said carefully, “is everything okay?””
My father blinked as if he had forgotten we were all standing there.
Then he asked again.
“Your mother’s name.””
The room went quiet.
Even Mom lowered her camera.
“Daniel,” she said, using the serious voice she only used when something was wrong.
“What is happening?””
My father didn’t answer her.
He was waiting for Ethan.
Ethan looked between us, confused.
“My mom’s name is Claire Whitmore.””
The color drained from Dad’s face.
Not slowly.
Instantly.
He grabbed the back of the dining chair and lowered himself into it.
I felt my smile disappear.
A few minutes earlier, everything had been perfect.
My dress was exactly what I had imagined when I first saw it hanging in the store window. The dark blue fabric shimmered when I moved, and Mom had cried when she saw me walk downstairs.
“You look like you’re going to remember tonight forever,” she had whispered.
She was right.
I just didn’t know how true those words would become.
Prom was supposed to be simple.
A beautiful night.
A night where I danced with the boy I had spent the last year falling for. A night where my parents embarrassed me with childhood stories, took too many pictures, and reminded me to be home before midnight.
Instead, my father was staring at Ethan like he had been waiting thirty years to see him.
“Claire Whitmore?”” Dad repeated.
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
Dad looked down.
His hands were shaking.
“Where did she live before you were born?””
I stared at him.
“Dad, what are you doing?””
He ignored me.
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“She lived in Oregon for a while. Then she moved to California.””
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“And you were born when?””
“June 14th.””
Mom’s face changed.
I noticed because I knew every expression she had.
Confusion.
Fear.
Then realization.
“No,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“Mom?””
Dad stood slowly.
“Did Claire ever tell you anything about a man named Daniel Carter?””
Ethan froze.
The silence that followed felt heavier than any scream.
My stomach twisted.
“Why would she?””
Dad closed his eyes.
Because he already knew the answer.
Because whatever was happening, he had known it might happen someday.
“I need everyone to sit down.””
Nobody moved.
“Dad, you’re scaring me.””
He looked at me.
And for the first time in my entire life, I saw something I had never seen in his eyes.
Guilt.
Not regret.
Not embarrassment.
Guilt.
The kind that belonged to a secret buried so deep that even the person carrying it had almost convinced himself it was gone.
“Before I met your mother,” Dad said quietly, “there was someone else.””
Mom looked away.
I noticed that.
And somehow, that scared me more.
“You knew about her?”” I asked.
Mom swallowed.
“I knew your father had a past.””
Dad nodded.
“But I never knew everything.””
Ethan crossed his arms.
“What does this have to do with me?””
Dad looked at him.
Then at me.
And every second he waited made the answer worse.
“Claire and I were together a long time ago.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“She left,” Dad continued.
“We lost contact. I thought that was the end of it.””
“But?”” Mom asked.
Dad’s voice became quieter.
“But years later, I heard she might have been pregnant.””
My heart started pounding.
“No.””
I said it before anyone else could.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Dad looked at Ethan.
“The timing matches.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“What are you saying?””
Dad didn’t answer immediately.
He didn’t need to.
I already understood.
The age.
The name.
The history.
Everything was lining up.
I looked at Ethan.
The boy who had held my hand through every difficult day.
The boy who had kissed me under the football stadium lights.
The boy I thought might be my first real love.
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Dad…”
He looked at me.
“There’s a chance Ethan is my son.””
The room went silent.
The clock on the wall became the loudest sound I had ever heard.
Ethan slowly let go of my hand.
My fingers felt cold without his.
Then he reached into his pocket.
“My mom needs to hear this.””
He unlocked his phone.
“Ethan, wait,” Dad said.
But Ethan was already calling.
The speaker turned on.
One ring.
Two rings.
Three.
Then a woman answered.
“Ethan? Is everything okay?””
Nobody breathed.
Ethan looked at my father.
Then said the words that made Dad close his eyes.
“Mom, I’m with Daniel Carter.””
Silence.
A long, terrifying silence.
Then Claire Whitmore whispered:
“How do you know that name?””
May you like
And my father’s face told me one thing.
He already knew this secret was older than any of us.
