Chapter 9: The Last Letter from a Mother

"Tell me what happened to my mother.""

Adrian's voice was low.

Richard stood near Eleanor's grave, his hands clenched at his sides.

Margaret Parker looked exhausted.

Lily held the letter against her chest.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Richard spoke.

"Your mother was sick.""

"That's not what Margaret said.""

"She had been ill for years.""

"Then why were her medical records accessed?""

Richard glanced at Margaret.

"Because I was trying to help her.""

Margaret shook her head.

"No. You were trying to make sure she couldn't speak.""

Richard's face hardened.

"Be careful.""

The old woman stepped forward.

"I have spent twenty-three years being careful. I am finished.""

She looked at Adrian.

"Your mother discovered that Edward had left a second set of instructions. They were hidden inside the family trust documents. She wanted to expose everything before her illness became worse.""

"What did the instructions say?"" Adrian asked.

Margaret swallowed.

"They named the person who would inherit the entire Whitmore estate if both children were declared legally dead.""

Adrian looked toward Richard.

"Who?""

Margaret didn't answer.

She looked at the headstone.

Then she said quietly, "Richard.""

Silence.

Lily stared at the man.

"You inherited everything?""

Richard's expression remained cold.

"I kept the company running.""

"That isn't what she asked.""

Adrian stepped forward.

"You inherited everything because you allowed us to disappear.""

Richard raised his voice.

"I did not arrange Eleanor's death!""

Margaret looked at him.

"But you knew she was being poisoned.""

Richard froze.

Lily's hand flew to her mouth.

Adrian felt a cold pressure spread through his chest.

"What did you say?""

Margaret opened her handbag and removed a small medical envelope.

"Your mother gave me this shortly before she died.""

She handed it to Adrian.

Inside were copies of laboratory results and a prescription record.

The medication had been administered over several months.

The reports showed that Eleanor's condition had deteriorated rapidly after a change in treatment.

Adrian looked at the prescribing physician's name.

Dr. Nathaniel Price.

He recognized it.

Price had been the Whitmore family doctor.

He had attended every major family event, treated Adrian's childhood illnesses, and even delivered the eulogy at Eleanor's funeral.

"Where is he now?"" Adrian asked.

Margaret answered.

"Dead.""

"When?""

"Three years ago.""

Adrian stared at the paperwork.

"Did he know what he was doing?""

Margaret hesitated.

"He knew something was wrong. Eleanor confronted him. He told her the medication had been changed under instructions from the family office.""

"Whose instructions?""

Margaret looked at Richard.

Richard turned away.

Adrian moved toward him.

"Did you authorize it?""

"I never wanted your mother dead.""

"That isn't an answer.""

Richard looked at him.

"I wanted her to stop making accusations.""

"Did you know the medication was dangerous?""

Richard's silence lasted too long.

Adrian's voice broke.

"She was my mother.""

Richard finally spoke.

"She was my sister.""

"And you let her die.""

Richard looked toward the trees.

"I thought she would recover.""

Margaret shook her head.

"You knew she was getting worse. I watched you cancel her appointments with independent doctors. I watched you replace her prescriptions. And I watched her beg you to let her see her children.""

Lily stepped forward.

"Did she know I was alive?""

Margaret nodded.

"She knew.""

"Did she know Adrian was her son?""

"Yes.""

"Did she know he believed he was your brother?""

Margaret's eyes filled.

"She knew.""

Lily's voice cracked.

"Then why didn't she come get us?""

Margaret looked at her.

"Because she was afraid she wouldn't be able to protect you.""

Adrian took a long breath.

He wanted to hit Richard.

He wanted to scream.

But he remembered his mother's voice.

Be kind, Adrian. Even when people make it difficult.

He turned away.

"Margaret, do you have the rest of her letter?""

The old woman nodded.

"There was one final page. Eleanor asked me to keep it separate until both children were together.""

She removed another envelope.

This one was smaller.

The paper had been folded several times.

Lily took it.

Her hands shook as she opened the letter.

My precious Charlotte and Adrian,

I have failed you in ways I cannot begin to describe. I was your mother, and I should have fought harder.

Charlotte, I heard you cry the night they took you from me. I was too weak to stand. I remember reaching for you, but the room was already empty.

Lily covered her mouth.

Adrian, you were placed in Richard's arms while I was told to forget the truth. He promised me you would be safe. I wanted to believe him.

Adrian's eyes filled.

I did not know how to tell you that the man you called Father was actually your uncle. I was afraid the truth would destroy everything you believed about yourself.

He wiped his face.

Lily continued reading.

But there is one thing I need you both to understand.

You were never unwanted.

You were never mistakes.

You were never the reason our family suffered.

The people who hurt us made choices. Those choices were theirs. Do not spend your lives carrying their guilt.

The final paragraph was written in a different hand.

It was shaky.

If you find each other, please do not let the Whitmore name decide what kind of people you become.

Build something better.

Love, Mom.

Lily lowered the letter.

Adrian put his arms around her.

They stood beside Eleanor's grave, crying for a woman neither of them had truly been allowed to know.

For several minutes, the world seemed quiet.

Then Margaret Parker spoke.

"There is one more thing.""

Adrian looked at her.

"What?""

She pointed toward the old estate.

"Your mother left a locked room in the east wing. She told me never to open it unless both children returned.""

Richard immediately stepped forward.

"No.""

Adrian turned.

"What room?""

Richard shook his head.

"It doesn't matter.""

Margaret looked at him.

"Of course it matters.""

"What is inside?"" Lily asked.

Margaret's eyes moved toward the house.

"The original records. Letters. Photographs. And something your mother said would prove what really happened the night Charlotte disappeared.""

Adrian looked at Richard.

His uncle's face had become expressionless again.

"Where is the key?"" Adrian asked.

Margaret reached into her coat pocket.

She removed a small brass key.

"I kept it.""

Richard moved toward her.

"Give it to me.""

Adrian stepped between them.

"Don't.""

Richard stopped.

For a moment, the two men stared at each other.

Then Richard lowered his voice.

"You have no idea what you're about to uncover.""

Adrian took the key from Margaret.

"That's the problem. I've spent my entire life not knowing.""

The east wing of Whitmore House had remained closed for years.

Dust covered the windows.

The carpets smelled of age and damp wood.

Adrian walked ahead with Lily beside him.

Margaret followed slowly.

Richard remained near the entrance, refusing to go farther.

At the end of the corridor stood a narrow wooden door.

Adrian inserted the key.

It turned.

The room beyond was small.

A desk stood against one wall. Filing cabinets lined the other. A child's rocking horse sat beneath a white sheet.

Lily approached it.

She pulled the sheet away.

The wooden horse was painted pale blue.

A name had been carved into its side.

CHARLOTTE.

She touched the letters.

"I had this?""

Adrian nodded slowly.

"You loved horses.""

Lily looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"Because you used to insist that every animal in the garden was a horse. Even the dog.""

A small smile appeared on her face.

Then she saw something on the desk.

A framed photograph.

Eleanor sat in the garden holding two babies.

Adrian and Lily.

Behind her stood Richard.

And beside him was a young man Adrian had never seen before.

The man wore a doctor's coat.

Lily picked up the photograph.

"Who is he?""

Margaret leaned closer.

"Dr. Nathaniel Price.""

Adrian turned the frame over.

There was a handwritten message.

To Eleanor, with love. Your children deserve the truth.

Beneath it was a date.

Three weeks before the twins were born.

Adrian frowned.

"Why would the doctor write this?""

Margaret opened the desk drawer.

Inside were several letters.

She picked up the top one.

"This is from Dr. Price.""

Adrian took it.

The letter was dated one week before Eleanor's death.

Richard,

I can no longer continue this arrangement. Eleanor has discovered the original medical records. She knows that the twins were never separated for medical reasons.

She also knows that the birth certificate for Adrian was altered.

I have copies of the original records, including the identity of the person who ordered the transfer.

If anything happens to me, the documents must be delivered to the children.

Adrian's hands began shaking.

"Who ordered the transfer?""

Margaret pointed toward the bottom of the page.

There was a handwritten signature.

Not Richard's.

Not Edward's.

A name Adrian had seen before.

Vivian Cross.

Lily looked up.

"My aunt?""

Margaret nodded slowly.

"Vivian was the one who arranged the twins' separation.""

Adrian felt sick.

"Why would she do that?""

Margaret opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was a second folder.

She removed a birth record and placed it on the desk.

"Because she was not simply Eleanor's sister.""

Adrian looked at her.

"What are you saying?""

Margaret's voice dropped.

"Vivian was Eleanor's biological mother.""

Silence.

Lily stared at the document.

Margaret continued.

"Edward had an affair with his own daughter. Eleanor was born from that relationship. Vivian raised her as her sister to protect the family name.""

Adrian looked toward the doorway.

Richard was no longer there.

He had disappeared.

"Where did he go?"" Lily asked.

Margaret turned toward the corridor.

Then a loud crash came from downstairs.

Adrian ran to the door.

A car engine roared outside.

By the time he reached the front entrance, Richard's black sedan was speeding through the gates.

Adrian's phone began ringing.

Daniel Mercer.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel?""

"Adrian, listen carefully. I've just received an alert from the Whitmore estate's security system.""

"What happened?""

"Someone accessed the private archives.""

"Who?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said, "Your aunt, Vivian Cross.""

Adrian looked toward Lily.

"Where is she?""

Daniel's voice became urgent.

"That's the problem. She left her house twenty minutes ago, and her security team says she took a firearm from the estate.""

Lily went pale.

"Why would she need a gun?""

Adrian stared at the open east-wing door.

Then he noticed something on the desk.

A small envelope that hadn't been there before.

It contained a single photograph.

Vivian holding a newborn baby.

On the back, in Eleanor's handwriting, were the words:

The person who separated my children is the only person who knows where their father was buried.

Adrian slowly looked toward the window.

His aunt hadn't simply hidden the truth.

May you like

She had been guarding it.

And now she was coming back.
