Chapter 8: The Second Birth Certificate

The room erupted.

Adrian grabbed the folder from his father's hands.

Richard tried to pull it back.

"Give that to me.""

"No.""

"Adrian, you don't understand.""

"Then explain it!""

He opened the folder and searched for the second page.

It wasn't there.

Richard had removed it.

Adrian looked up.

"Where is it?""

Richard said nothing.

Vivian pointed toward the leather briefcase.

"He took it from the estate archives this morning.""

Richard turned sharply.

"Enough.""

"No!"" Vivian shouted.

Her voice shook through the sitting room.

"I have spent my entire life being afraid of you. I watched my sister lose her children. I watched Margaret die without being able to tell the truth. I watched Adrian grow up believing his family was perfect.""

She wiped her eyes.

"And now Charlotte is standing in front of me, and you still want to control what she knows.""

Lily stepped toward Vivian.

"Please. Tell me everything.""

Vivian looked at her.

"Your mother didn't simply ask Margaret to hide you. She arranged for both babies to be moved.""

Adrian frowned.

"Both?""

"Yes.""

Richard's face changed.

Vivian continued.

"She knew Edward's men would be watching the hospital. She believed that if the twins remained together, they would both be in danger.""

Adrian looked at Richard.

"What happened to me?""

Vivian hesitated.

"You were supposed to be taken to a family outside Connecticut. A couple who had agreed to raise you.""

Adrian's mouth went dry.

"But I was adopted by Eleanor and Richard.""

"Yes. Because Richard changed the arrangement.""

Richard finally spoke.

"Eleanor was my sister.""

Adrian stared.

"What?""

Richard nodded.

"Edward was your biological grandfather, but he was also Eleanor's father. She had been adopted into the Whitmore family as a baby. I was her younger brother.""

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

He had grown up believing Richard was his biological father.

Now he was being told that the man was actually his maternal uncle.

"And my biological father?"" Adrian asked.

Richard looked at Vivian.

She answered.

"Edward.""

Adrian turned away.

The family tree he had known all his life was collapsing.

Lily sat down slowly.

"So we're both his children.""

Vivian nodded.

"Yes.""

"And our mother was Eleanor.""

"Yes.""

Lily stared at the floor.

"Then why did Richard raise Adrian?""

Vivian looked toward the older man.

"Because Eleanor begged him to.""

Richard's face softened slightly.

"Your mother was dying, Lily. She knew she couldn't protect both children. She asked me to raise Adrian as my own and make sure he never learned the truth.""

Adrian looked at him.

"Did you love me?""

Richard seemed surprised.

"Of course.""

"Then why did you let me believe Charlotte was dead?""

"Because Eleanor asked me to.""

"She asked you to protect us. Not destroy our lives.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand what Edward had done.""

"Then tell me!""

Richard stood.

"Edward had a network of people who owed him favors. Politicians, doctors, lawyers. He could make people disappear without leaving a paper trail.""

Adrian looked at the photograph.

"And you became him.""

Richard's expression darkened.

"I became the man who kept you alive.""

Lily suddenly stood.

"Where is my mother buried?""

Richard turned toward her.

"Which mother?""

"Don't.""

She looked directly at him.

"Eleanor. Where is she buried?""

Richard hesitated.

"At the family cemetery.""

"Then take me there.""

Adrian stepped forward.

"I'll go with you.""

Richard shook his head.

"That's not a good idea.""

Lily laughed bitterly.

"Of course it isn't.""

She picked up her coat.

"Every time I ask a question, someone tells me I'm not ready for the answer. I'm done waiting.""

Adrian nodded.

"We're going.""

The Whitmore family cemetery sat behind the old estate, surrounded by tall trees and an iron fence.

Adrian hadn't visited in years.

The last time he had stood beside his mother's grave, he had been furious with the world.

Now he approached the headstone with Lily beside him.

ELEANOR WHITMORE.

BELOVED MOTHER.

A LIFE OF COURAGE AND LOVE.

Lily knelt.

She brushed a fallen leaf away from the engraved name.

"Hello, Mom.""

Her voice cracked.

"I don't know whether you would have liked me.""

Adrian lowered his eyes.

"But I wish I had known you.""

For several minutes, she said nothing.

Then she placed the small gold bracelet on the grass.

"I think you were trying to protect me.""

Adrian knelt beside her.

"She loved you.""

Lily looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"Because I remember her.""

He swallowed.

"She used to sit beside my bed when I was sick. She sang terribly. She made pancakes shaped like animals. She always carried candy in her handbag because she believed children shouldn't have to wait for dessert.""

A faint smile crossed Lily's face.

"Margaret did that too.""

Adrian looked at her.

"Maybe that's how they were alike.""

Lily lowered her head.

"I wish I could remember her.""

He put an arm around her shoulders.

"You don't have to remember someone to deserve their love.""

She leaned against him.

For the first time, they embraced without either of them wondering whether the other would pull away.

Then Adrian noticed something.

Behind Eleanor's headstone, partially hidden beneath the grass, was a small metal plaque.

He crouched.

It was engraved with two names.

*CHARLOTTE AND ADRIAN.*

Below them was a date.

Their birth date.

And beneath that, a sentence:

Together in life, separated by those who feared the truth.

Adrian stared.

"Who put this here?""

Richard had remained several steps behind them.

He looked at the plaque.

His expression became rigid.

"Eleanor.""

"When?""

"Three days before she died.""

Lily looked at the engraving.

"She knew I was alive.""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

Adrian stood.

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

Richard's voice was quiet.

"Because she believed telling you would put both of you in danger.""

Adrian looked at him.

"From whom?""

Richard didn't answer.

Then a woman's voice came from behind the cemetery fence.

"From me.""

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman stood beside the gate.

She wore a dark coat and held a walking stick.

Her face was familiar.

Adrian recognized her immediately.

"Mrs. Parker?""

Margaret Parker had been Eleanor's personal assistant for almost twenty years.

She had attended family celebrations and handled private correspondence.

She was also the last person Adrian remembered seeing with his mother before she died.

"What are you doing here?"" he asked.

The old woman looked at Lily.

"I came to see whether the little girl finally found her way home.""

Lily stepped forward.

"Do you know me?""

Margaret nodded.

"I knew you when you were a baby.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a sealed envelope.

"Eleanor asked me to give you this if you ever returned.""

Lily took it.

The envelope was addressed in Eleanor's handwriting.

*TO MY DAUGHTER, CHARLOTTE.*

Lily's fingers trembled.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Eleanor holding two newborn babies.

And a letter.

My darling children,

If you are reading this together, then the people who separated you have finally lost their power over your lives.

Lily began to cry.

Adrian leaned closer.

The next paragraph made him stop breathing.

Richard will tell you that he raised Adrian because I asked him to. That is partly true. But he will not tell you what happened after the adoption papers were signed.

Adrian looked at Richard.

His uncle's face had gone pale.

Lily continued.

He will not tell you that Adrian's adoption was never legally completed.

She looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Margaret Parker answered.

"It means Richard wasn't your legal father, Adrian.""

Adrian stared at her.

"Then who was?""

The old woman took a breath.

"Your mother left the answer in the original birth records.""

She reached into her handbag again.

This time, she removed a second document.

It was a birth certificate.

Adrian took it.

His name was written clearly.

ADRIAN JAMES WHITMORE.

Mother: Eleanor Whitmore.

Father: Edward Whitmore.

Below the document was another name.

A witness.

Richard Whitmore.

Adrian looked up.

"Why did you sign this?""

Richard stared at the ground.

"Because your mother begged me to.""

"To hide the truth?""

"To protect you.""

Adrian shook his head.

"Stop saying that.""

Then Margaret Parker stepped closer.

"There's something else Eleanor wanted me to tell you.""

Everyone turned.

The old woman looked at Lily.

"Your mother didn't die from natural causes.""

Lily's face went white.

Adrian felt his stomach drop.

"What?""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"Three days before she died, Eleanor discovered that someone had been accessing her private medical records.""

"Who?""

Margaret looked directly at Richard.

"He knows.""

May you like

Richard took a step backward.

And for the first time, Adrian saw genuine fear in his uncle's eyes.
