Chapter 7: The Twin Nobody Was Supposed to Find

"One of those babies was never supposed to survive.""
Richard Whitmore's words hung in the room.
Adrian stared at the photograph on the table.
Two hospital bracelets.
Two newborn babies.
One mother.
And a family secret so monstrous that even after twenty-three years, nobody seemed capable of telling the whole truth.
Lily was the first to speak.
"What does that mean?""
Richard closed the leather folder.
"It means your mother gave birth to twins.""
"We heard you," Adrian replied.
"Explain the rest.""
Richard looked at Vivian.
His sister-in-law had turned away, both hands pressed against her mouth.
"Tell them," he ordered.
Vivian shook her head.
"No.""
"Vivian.""
"I have kept quiet for long enough.""
Richard stepped toward her.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
Vivian finally stood.
"Neither did I when I helped you destroy my sister's life.""
Lily looked between them.
"Who was supposed to die?""
Neither answered.
She stepped closer to Richard.
"Was it me?""
Richard looked at her.
"Yes.""
Lily's face drained of color.
Adrian moved immediately.
"Don't come any closer to her.""
Richard ignored him.
"Your grandfather, Edward, believed the Whitmore family could not survive another scandal. Your mother was young, unmarried, and pregnant when she discovered that Edward had been hiding the truth about your biological father.""
"Who was he?"" Adrian demanded.
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Edward.""
Vivian closed her eyes.
Richard continued.
"Eleanor was Edward's biological daughter. She had been adopted into the family as an infant, but the truth was concealed. When she discovered what had happened, she became determined to expose him.""
Lily felt sick.
"So he was my biological grandfather?""
"Yes," Vivian whispered.
"And my father?""
Richard nodded.
"Edward was also your biological father.""
Adrian took a step backward.
The room seemed to spin.
He looked at Lily.
She was staring at the floor, her fingers clutching the silver crescent.
"Why?"" Adrian asked.
Richard's expression hardened.
"Edward was a cruel man. He controlled everyone around him. He used money, influence, and fear to make sure nobody challenged him.""
"That doesn't explain why one of us was supposed to die.""
Richard hesitated.
"Because Edward believed the twins would expose the truth.""
Vivian finally spoke.
"He ordered the doctor to report that one baby had been stillborn.""
Lily looked up.
"Which one?""
"You," Vivian answered.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Eleanor was unconscious when you were removed. By the time she woke up, she was told that one of her daughters had died.""
"Then how did I survive?""
Vivian swallowed.
"Your mother had suspected something. Before going into labor, she had asked Margaret Ellis, a nurse she trusted, to help her if anything happened.""
Adrian frowned.
"Margaret?""
"She knew about Edward. She knew Eleanor was afraid. When the hospital staff told Eleanor that one of the babies had died, Margaret realized something was wrong.""
Vivian continued.
"She found you in a private room, alive, but already marked for transfer to another facility. She took you before anyone could stop her.""
Lily's eyes filled.
"She saved me.""
"Yes.""
"Then why did she never tell me?""
Vivian looked down.
"Because Richard threatened her. He told her that if she ever revealed your identity, you would be taken away again.""
Adrian turned toward his father.
"Did you threaten a nurse?""
Richard didn't deny it.
"I was trying to prevent a disaster.""
"You let my sister grow up believing nobody wanted her.""
"I kept her alive.""
"You stole her childhood!""
Richard's hand struck the table.
"Because I was trying to protect the family!""
The room fell silent.
Then Adrian said something that made Richard's expression change.
"What family, Father? The one you built on lies?""
Richard finally sat down.
For the first time since entering Vivian's house, he looked tired.
"Edward was dead by the time the twins were born," he said.
Adrian frowned.
"What?""
"He died before Eleanor delivered. The official report said heart failure.""
Lily looked at Vivian.
"Was it true?""
Vivian shook her head.
"No.""
Richard stared at the floor.
"Edward had been ill for months. Eleanor discovered his condition and the truth about her birth at almost the same time. She wanted to expose everything. Edward was afraid that the family name would be destroyed.""
Adrian's voice was cold.
"You're saying he arranged his own death?""
Richard shook his head.
"No. I am saying someone helped him die.""
Vivian began crying again.
"Richard, stop.""
He looked at her.
"You wanted the truth. Now you'll hear it.""
He turned toward Adrian.
"Edward's doctor was paid to administer medication that would accelerate his death. Your mother discovered the arrangement. She also discovered that Edward had left instructions regarding the children.""
"What instructions?""
Richard opened the folder again.
He removed a typed document.
At the top was the Whitmore family crest.
Beneath it was a clause concerning the inheritance of any children born to Eleanor.
The wording was precise.
If the twins were publicly acknowledged, Edward's estate would pass into a legal dispute, potentially exposing the circumstances of Eleanor's birth and the financial arrangements surrounding her adoption.
But there was another condition.
The document stated that any child born outside the accepted family structure could be excluded from the inheritance.
Adrian read it twice.
"That's why you moved the money?""
Richard nodded.
"Edward wanted the children erased from the legal record.""
"And you followed his instructions?""
"I was twenty-seven years old. I was trying to hold a company together.""
"You were trying to hold on to money.""
Richard looked at him.
"Money is what keeps people alive in this world.""
Adrian's expression hardened.
"No. People keep people alive.""
He turned toward Lily.
She had been silent for several minutes.
Too silent.
"Lily?""
She looked at him.
"Is that why I have no memories of my first family?""
"Probably," Adrian said gently.
"Because someone made sure I couldn't remember?""
He didn't know what to say.
Then Vivian approached.
She carried a small velvet box.
"I kept this for you.""
Lily stared at it.
"What is it?""
"Something Eleanor gave me before she died.""
Vivian opened the box.
Inside was a tiny gold bracelet.
Two small charms hung from it.
One was shaped like a crescent moon.
The other was shaped like a star.
Vivian handed it to Lily.
"Your mother told me the moon was for the first daughter and the star was for the second.""
Lily touched the bracelet.
"Which one was I?""
Vivian smiled sadly.
"You were the moon.""
"And Adrian?""
"The star.""
Adrian stared at the little bracelet.
For the first time, the idea of being Lily's twin felt real.
He had spent twenty-three years imagining a little sister who was five years younger than him.
Now he was looking at someone who had been born on the same day.
Someone who might have shared his first cries, his first breaths, and the same mother's heartbeat.
He reached for her hand.
She allowed him to hold it.
But before either could speak, Vivian suddenly grabbed the edge of the table.
Her face had gone white.
"Richard," she whispered.
He looked at her.
"What?""
Vivian pointed toward the document.
"That's not the original.""
Richard frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
"The inheritance clause.""
She looked at Adrian.
"There's a second page.""
Richard immediately closed the folder.
Vivian stepped forward.
"Edward left another instruction. It named the person who was supposed to take custody of the twins.""
Adrian looked at her.
"Who?""
Vivian's voice trembled.
"Your father.""
Adrian turned toward Richard.
Richard's expression was unreadable.
May you like
Then Vivian delivered the final revelation.
"Richard wasn't supposed to protect the twins. He was supposed to make sure neither of them ever discovered who Edward really was.""
