Chapter 6: The Woman in the Photograph

Adrian didn't speak during the drive back to Manhattan.

He held the photograph in both hands, examining the woman who had carried a child away from the Whitmore estate twenty-three years earlier.

Lily sat beside him.

She had stopped crying.

That worried him more than the tears would have.

People cried when they still believed someone might comfort them.

Silence was different.

It often meant they had begun accepting that nobody could.

Finally, Lily spoke.

"Do you think she's my mother?""

Adrian looked at the photograph.

"I don't know.""

"She has the same birthmark.""

"Yes.""

"And the same eyes.""

"Yes.""

Lily swallowed.

"Then why did Margaret raise me?""

Adrian considered the question.

"Maybe the woman trusted her.""

"Or maybe Margaret took me from her.""

He looked at Lily.

"Samuel said the woman brought you to the estate.""

"That doesn't mean she wanted to leave me.""

"No. It doesn't.""

Lily looked back through the window.

"I spent years thinking Margaret was my entire world.""

Her voice trembled.

"Now I don't even know whether she was telling me the truth.""

Adrian reached for the photograph.

He stopped himself.

Instead, he said, "You don't have to decide what any of this means today.""

Lily closed her eyes.

"I just want one person to tell me the truth.""

Adrian looked at the city approaching in the distance.

"Then that's what we're going to find.""

At the Whitmore headquarters, Daniel was waiting in Adrian's office.

He stood beside the desk with two folders.

"I found the company that received the trust funds.""

Adrian removed his coat.

"Who owns it?""

Daniel placed the first folder on the desk.

"Northbridge Holdings was registered in Delaware. The original shareholder was a woman named Vivian Cross.""

Adrian frowned.

"Do we know her?""

Daniel opened the second folder.

"Your father does.""

He slid a photograph across the desk.

It showed a woman in her late sixties leaving a restaurant.

Adrian recognized her immediately.

"Vivian Cross.""

"She was your mother's younger sister.""

Lily looked up.

"My aunt?""

Daniel nodded.

"Your maternal aunt.""

Adrian stared at the photograph.

Vivian had been a regular visitor at Whitmore House when he was growing up. She had attended family holidays, birthday celebrations, and several of Charlotte's childhood parties.

But after Charlotte disappeared, Vivian had stopped visiting.

Adrian remembered his mother saying that Vivian had moved overseas.

He hadn't questioned it.

"Where is she now?"" he asked.

"She lives in Connecticut.""

"Does my father know?""

Daniel nodded.

"He's been making payments to her for more than twenty years.""

Lily looked between them.

"Why would my aunt receive the money?""

Daniel opened the folder.

"That's unclear. But I found a transfer record dated six months after Charlotte disappeared. It was made from the trust account to Northbridge Holdings.""

"Forty-two million?"" Adrian asked.

"Not all at once. The original transfer was smaller. Additional payments were made over several years.""

Adrian looked at the records.

His father had not simply redirected Charlotte's inheritance.

He had used the money to maintain a financial relationship with Vivian Cross.

And Samuel had received a million dollars to remain silent.

The pieces were beginning to connect.

But they still didn't explain why Vivian had helped remove Charlotte from the estate.

Or why Richard had allowed it.

That afternoon, Adrian and Lily drove to Vivian Cross's residence.

It was a sprawling colonial mansion behind iron gates, surrounded by carefully trimmed hedges.

Lily stared at the building.

"She lives here?""

"Apparently.""

"Does she know I'm alive?""

Adrian didn't answer.

He wasn't sure.

A security guard approached the car.

"May I help you?""

"Adrian Whitmore. I'm here to see Vivian Cross.""

The guard checked his tablet.

"Do you have an appointment?""

"No.""

"Mrs. Cross doesn't accept unannounced visitors.""

Adrian took out his phone.

"Call her.""

The guard hesitated.

Then he stepped aside and made the call.

A few minutes later, the gates opened.

Vivian received them in a sunlit sitting room.

She was seventy-two, elegant, and impeccably dressed in a cream-colored blouse and tailored trousers.

Her silver hair was arranged in a neat bob.

When Adrian entered, she smiled politely.

"Adrian. What a surprise.""

Then she saw Lily.

The smile disappeared.

Her teacup slipped from her fingers and shattered against the marble floor.

"Charlotte?""

Lily froze.

Adrian watched his aunt's face.

"Hello, Vivian.""

The older woman slowly stood.

She stared at Lily's eyes, her hair, and the small crescent behind her ear.

"Oh, my God.""

Lily stepped forward.

"Do you know me?""

Vivian's hand rose to her mouth.

"You're alive.""

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

"Everyone seems to know that except the rest of us.""

Vivian looked at him.

"Please. Sit down.""

"Don't tell me to sit down.""

"Adrian...""

"How long have you known?""

Vivian's eyes filled.

"Not all these years.""

"But you knew something.""

She looked at Lily.

"I knew you were taken somewhere safe.""

"By whom?""

Vivian lowered herself onto the sofa.

"Your mother.""

Lily's breath caught.

"Which mother?""

Vivian looked confused.

"The woman who gave birth to you.""

Adrian stepped closer.

"You're saying that woman was Eleanor?""

Vivian shook her head.

"No.""

She looked at Lily.

"Your biological mother was my sister.""

Silence filled the room.

Lily stared at her.

"Your sister?""

Vivian nodded.

"Her name was Eleanor Whitmore.""

Adrian felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

"That's impossible.""

Vivian shook her head.

"Your mother was not your biological mother, Adrian. She adopted you when you were three months old.""

Adrian stared at her.

"What?""

Vivian's eyes moved between them.

"Charlotte was her biological daughter. You were adopted. Your parents never told you because they believed it was better for you to grow up without knowing.""

Adrian struggled to breathe.

He had always believed he and Charlotte shared the same parents.

Now, in a matter of minutes, his entire understanding of his family had collapsed.

Lily looked down at her pendant.

"Then who is my father?""

Vivian closed her eyes.

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not.""

"Samuel said my father was at the estate that night.""

Vivian's expression changed.

"Samuel spoke to you?""

"Yes.""

Vivian looked toward the windows.

"Then your father knows you're here.""

Adrian stepped forward.

"Who is he?""

Vivian shook her head.

"Your mother never told me his name.""

"Why did Richard give you forty-two million dollars?""

Vivian looked at him sharply.

"Because he owed me.""

"For what?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"For keeping your mother quiet.""

Adrian stared at her.

"About what?""

Vivian's voice became almost inaudible.

"About the night Charlotte was born.""

Lily felt her stomach tighten.

"What happened?""

Vivian looked directly at her.

"Your mother was told you were stillborn.""

Lily's face went pale.

"What?""

Vivian continued.

"She had been unconscious after delivery. When she woke up, the doctors told her the baby hadn't survived.""

"Then why was I alive?""

Vivian began crying.

"Because someone had taken you out of the hospital.""

Adrian gripped the back of a chair.

"Who?""

Vivian looked at him.

"Richard.""

The room went silent.

"He took Charlotte?"" Adrian whispered.

Vivian nodded.

"He told Eleanor that the baby had died. He arranged for another woman to raise her. He thought he could control what happened afterward.""

Lily shook her head.

"Why?""

Vivian looked toward the photograph in Adrian's hand.

"Because your father was not supposed to know you existed.""

Adrian's blood ran cold.

"My father?""

Vivian looked at him.

"Richard wasn't your biological father either.""

Adrian stared.

Then she delivered the final blow.

"Your biological father was the same man who fathered Charlotte.""

Lily's knees weakened.

"Who?""

Vivian opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, a man's voice came from the doorway.

"That's enough, Vivian.""

Everyone turned.

Richard Whitmore stood there.

His face was expressionless.

In his right hand was a small black leather folder.

He looked directly at Lily.

Then he said something that made Adrian's entire body go rigid.

"Charlotte, I suggest you stop asking questions about your father.""

He paused.

"Because the man you're looking for has been dead for twenty-four years.""

Lily stared at him.

"Who was he?""

Richard slowly placed the leather folder on the table.

Then he looked at Adrian.

"Your grandfather.""

For a moment, nobody moved.

Adrian's mind refused to process the words.

His grandfather, Edward Whitmore, had died when Adrian was eighteen months old.

The family had always said he died peacefully after a heart attack.

But Richard was looking at them with an expression that suggested something far darker.

Lily whispered, "You're saying my father was Edward Whitmore?""

Richard nodded.

"And that is why your mother spent twenty-three years hiding you.""

Adrian looked at Vivian.

"Is that true?""

Vivian covered her face.

Richard opened the folder.

Inside was a yellowed hospital record.

A birth certificate.

And a photograph of a young Eleanor standing beside an elderly man.

On the back, someone had written:

Edward and his daughter, Eleanor. Before the family was destroyed.

Richard placed the photograph on the table.

"Your mother was not simply protecting Charlotte from a dangerous family secret," he said.

"She was protecting her from the truth about the man who created it.""

Adrian looked at Lily.

She was staring at the photograph, tears gathering in her eyes.

Then she looked up at Richard.

"Why did you let me believe I was abandoned?""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Because the truth would have destroyed you.""

Lily shook her head.

"No. You destroyed me when you took my life away.""

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

Then he turned toward Adrian.

"There's something else you need to understand.""

He pulled a second photograph from the folder.

It showed Eleanor holding a newborn baby.

But there were two hospital bracelets visible on the mother's wrist.

One marked CHARLOTTE.

The other marked ADRIAN.

Richard placed it between them.

"Eleanor didn't give birth to one child that night," he said.

"She gave birth to twins.""

Adrian stared at the photograph.

Richard's voice dropped.

"And one of those babies was never supposed to survive.""

Lily looked at Adrian.

Then at the photograph.

And suddenly, the man she had met only two days earlier wasn't merely a possible brother.

May you like

He might have been the other child at the center of the same secret.

*And Richard Whitmore was about to reveal why one twin had been kept—and the other erased.*
