Chapter 9: The Choice Before the Ceremony
The church became completely silent.
I could hear the ticking of the old clock above the entrance.
Everyone was waiting.
Waiting for my mother to speak.
Waiting for the final secret.
My mother looked like she wanted to disappear.
“Emma…”
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Not another half-truth.””
She nodded slowly.
“You deserve the truth.””
Victor smiled.
“Finally.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Leave.””
Victor looked amused.
“Why? She deserves to know.””
“You don’t get to tell her.””
“No.””
Victor looked at me.
“But I think she deserves to know everything.””
I looked at my mother.
“Did you create the account?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
“Why?””
“Because after Daniel betrayed Richard, I found out.””
“Found out what?””
“That Victor was manipulating everything.””
I looked at Victor.
He didn’t deny it.
“My mother’s inheritance…”
My mother nodded.
“Your grandmother knew I had made mistakes.””
“What mistakes?””
She swallowed.
“I helped Daniel because I believed him.””
My heart sank.
“But when I learned the truth, I tried to fix it.””
“How?””
“I created a separate account using money from assets that belonged to you.””
I froze.
“My money?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew one day you would need proof.””
I looked at Victor.
“And he knew?””
Victor smiled.
“I knew everything.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“He was the one who convinced me to hide the truth.””
Victor laughed.
“Don’t blame me for your choices.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You pushed me.””
“And you agreed.””
That sentence destroyed something.
Because both were true.
Daniel made his choices.
Victor encouraged them.
My wedding guests watched silently.
The people I loved.
The people I trusted.
All seeing the ugliest parts of my family.
Michael came toward me.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
He took my hands.
“You don’t have to apologize.””
“I feel like my whole life is a lie.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“Your life isn’t a lie. Some people just lied inside it.””
Tears filled my eyes.
Then Victor spoke again.
“There’s still one thing you don’t know.””
I turned.
“What?””
He pulled out a document.
“This wedding.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What about it?””
He smiled.
“The reason Daniel canceled the payment wasn’t because he was angry.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Stop.””
Victor continued.
“He discovered that the money being used for this wedding came from an account that could expose him.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that true?””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“So you didn’t cancel because I chose Richard?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I did both.””
The honesty hurt.
“I was angry.””
He stepped closer.
“But when I discovered Victor was trying to use your wedding to access the trust account, I panicked.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
The church went silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“I spent twenty years pretending I was your protector.””
His voice broke.
“But I was also the person who hurt you.””
I felt tears fall.
For years, I wanted a simple answer.
A hero.
A villain.
Someone to blame.
But life wasn’t that clean.
Everyone had failed me in different ways.
The difference was what they did afterward.
Victor was still smiling.
“You see?””
He spread his arms.
“They’re all guilty.””
He looked at me.
“So why forgive any of them?””
Nobody answered.
Because it was the question I had been asking myself.
Then my grandmother’s recording came back to my mind.
If you choose forgiveness, let it be because you want peace.
Not because someone pressured me.
Not because someone deserved it.
Because I chose.
I walked toward Victor.
“You want me to hate them.””
His smile faded slightly.
“What?””
“You spent years trying to make everyone destroy each other.””
I looked at Daniel.
“My stepfather made mistakes.””
I looked at Richard.
“My father made mistakes.””
I looked at my mother.
“She made mistakes.””
Then I looked back at Victor.
“But you built your entire life on making other people’s mistakes useful.””
His expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I understand perfectly.””
I took the document from his hand.
Then I ripped it.
His smile disappeared.
“You think this changes anything?””
“Yes.””
I looked around the church.
“Because this wedding was never about money.””
Victor stepped closer.
“Careful.””
Daniel moved immediately.
But I raised my hand.
“No.””
I faced Victor.
“For the first time in my life, I’m making my own choice.””
The church doors opened.
A lawyer walked in.
“Emma Carter?””
Everyone turned.
“Yes?””
He held up a folder.
“I’m here on behalf of your grandmother’s estate.””
Victor’s face changed.
The lawyer continued:
“We have evidence of financial fraud involving Victor Hale.””
The room exploded with whispers.
Victor stepped back.
“What?””
The lawyer looked at him.
“And we also have a witness statement.””
He turned.
Toward Daniel.
Daniel closed his eyes.
I realized then.
This was the moment.
The final choice.
The lawyer asked:
“Mr. Carter, are you prepared to testify against Victor Hale?””
Everyone looked at Daniel.
He looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw him choose.
Not pride.
Not fear.
Truth.
“Yes,” he said.
The lawyer nodded.
“Then we can proceed.””
Victor stared at Daniel.
“You’ll destroy yourself.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Maybe.””
Then he looked at me.
“But I already destroyed enough.””
The church became quiet again.
Outside, the wedding bells started ringing.
But I still wasn’t sure if I could walk down that aisle.
Because before I married Michael…
May you like
I had one more person to forgive.
Myself.
