Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Money

I spent the next hour sitting at my childhood desk, reading every document my mother had hidden away.

Every page felt like another piece of my life falling apart.

There were bank records.

Letters.

Legal documents.

Things I didn’t understand.

But one thing became clear.

Everyone had been fighting over the same thing.

The truth.

Not money.

Not the wedding.

The truth.

I found Daniel’s number and called him.

He answered after the first ring.

“I wondered how long it would take.””

I hated how calm he sounded.

“How long have you known?””

“About the trust?””

“Yes.””

“A long time.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He was quiet.

Then:

“Would you have believed me?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

Daniel continued.

“When I met your mother, Richard was already gone.””

“You knew why.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let me believe he abandoned me?””

His voice changed.

“I didn’t tell you because I thought I was protecting you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Emma—”

“No. You don’t get to say that.””

I stood up.

“You knew my father wasn’t the villain.””

“He made mistakes.””

“So did you.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said something I didn’t expect.

“You’re right.””

I froze.

“I’m right?””

“Yes.””

His voice was quieter now.

“I was hurt. I was angry. And when you chose Richard to walk you down the aisle, I felt like twenty years disappeared.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Did you love me?””

A long pause.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you punish me?””

Another pause.

“Because I wanted you to understand what it felt like.””

“What what felt like?””

“To lose someone you thought would choose you.””

The answer hurt.

Because for a moment, I heard the wounded man I had known.

Not the man who canceled my wedding.

Not the man who put a check on a desk.

Just Daniel.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

But then I remembered the venue.

The vendors.

The humiliation.

The fear.

“You could have talked to me.””

“I know.””

“You could have told me you were hurt.””

“I know.””

“But you chose revenge.””

He didn’t deny it.

And that was worse.

“I made a mistake.””

I looked out the window.

“My wedding is tomorrow.””

“I know.””

“Do you still want to come?””

The question surprised both of us.

The silence lasted so long I thought the call had dropped.

Then Daniel whispered:

“I don’t know if I deserve to.””

I swallowed.

“I didn’t ask if you deserved it.””

Another silence.

“I’ll be there.””

I ended the call.

But the problem wasn’t solved.

Because I still didn’t know what happened in 2009.

That afternoon, I met Richard at a quiet coffee shop near the church.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Not like the villain I had imagined growing up.

Like a man carrying years of regret.

“Your grandmother was the only person who believed me,” he said.

I stirred my coffee.

“Why?””

“Because she knew Daniel.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Richard sighed.

“Daniel and I started a company together.””

“I know.””

“But what you don’t know is that Daniel secretly transferred money from the company before it collapsed.””

My heart stopped.

“You’re saying he stole from you?””

“I’m saying he made sure everyone blamed me.””

“Do you have proof?””

Richard nodded.

“I did.””

“Where?””

He looked away.

“Daniel destroyed most of it.””

“Most?””

He reached into his jacket and placed a small flash drive on the table.

My eyes moved to it.

“What is that?””

“The last copy.””

I stared.

“Why do you have it now?””

“Because I knew one day you would need to know the truth.””

I picked up the flash drive.

It felt strangely heavy.

“What’s on it?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“Your stepfather admitting everything.””

My breath caught.

“You recorded him?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Before Richard could answer, my phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Is this Emma Carter?””

“Yes.””

“This is Melissa from Carter & Associates Law Firm.””

I frowned.

“Why are you calling me?””

There was hesitation.

Then:

“We need to discuss your inheritance.””

My heart stopped.

“My inheritance?””

“Yes.””

“What inheritance?””

The woman lowered her voice.

“The one Daniel Carter has been trying to access for years.””

I looked at Richard.

He had gone pale.

“What are you talking about?””

The woman paused.

“Emma, before your grandmother died, she changed her will.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“How?””

“She removed Daniel Carter as the executor.””

I couldn’t move.

“Why?””

The answer came softly.

“Because she discovered he had been lying.””

I stared at the flash drive.

At Richard.

At everything I thought I knew.

Then Melissa said:

“Emma, there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“Your grandmother didn’t leave the money to you alone.””

My heart pounded.

“Who else?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“She left it to you and Daniel Carter.””
