Chapter 8: The Wedding That Almost Never Happened

I drove to Daniel’s house without thinking.

Anger moved faster than reason.

By the time I reached his driveway, my hands were shaking.

He was standing outside.

Like he expected me.

“Did you cancel my wedding?””

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I didn’t.””

“The venue called me.””

His face changed.

“What did they say?””

“They said someone using your information tried to cancel everything.””

Daniel went completely still.

“That wasn’t me.””

I stared.

“Then who?””

He didn’t answer.

And suddenly, I knew.

Someone else was still moving pieces.

“Daniel.””

He looked toward the house.

“Come inside.””

I followed him.

For the first time in days, I entered his home and didn’t feel like I belonged there.

The walls were filled with memories.

My childhood.

My achievements.

My life.

But now every photo carried a question.

Daniel opened his laptop.

“I received an email this morning.””

“What email?””

He showed me.

It was from a private account.

The message was short.

You failed to stop her from learning the truth. Now I’ll finish what you started.

My skin prickled.

“Who sent this?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I’m not the only person who wanted Richard blamed.””

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel opened another folder.

Inside were old documents.

“This is everything I found after your grandmother died.””

I looked through them.

Bank records.

Emails.

Contracts.

Then I saw a name.

A name I didn’t recognize.

“Who is Victor Hale?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Someone I should have stopped years ago.””

“Explain.””

He sat down.

“Victor was an investor in the company.””

“And?””

“He pushed me to make certain decisions.””

“Like stealing?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“You’re telling me someone convinced you?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I made the choice.””

The honesty surprised me.

“But Victor benefited from it.””

“How?””

“He wanted Richard out.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Because Richard refused to sell the company.””

I frowned.

“Why would that matter?””

“Because the company owned property that was worth millions.””

I understood.

“This was never just personal.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“It was business.””

The next morning arrived too quickly.

Wedding day.

Except nobody knew if there would be a wedding.

The church was decorated.

The flowers were delivered.

Guests were arriving.

But behind the scenes, chaos followed.

The caterer still needed confirmation.

The venue demanded payment.

The photographer threatened to leave.

I stood in the bridal room staring at my dress.

The dress I had dreamed about.

The dress that now felt like a symbol of everything falling apart.

My mother entered quietly.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t turn around.

“For what?””

“For everything.””

I looked at her reflection in the mirror.

“Mom, I love you.””

She started crying.

“But I don’t know if I trust you.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

Richard appeared behind her.

“I need to tell you something.””

I turned.

“What?””

He held a folder.

“I found the missing proof.””

My heart jumped.

“What proof?””

“The proof that Victor and Daniel weren’t the only ones involved.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Richard opened the folder.

Inside was an old photograph.

Three men standing together.

Richard.

Daniel.

Victor.

But there was a fourth person.

My breath stopped.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it every day growing up.

My mother.

“She was there?”” I whispered.

Richard shook his head.

“Not like you think.””

I looked closer.

The photo was from 2009.

My mother was standing beside the three men.

Holding a folder.

“What was she doing?””

Richard looked devastated.

“She was trying to save you.””

That made no sense.

“How?””

Before he answered, the church doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Daniel walked in.

But he wasn’t alone.

Behind him was a man in a gray suit.

Older.

Confident.

A smile on his face.

I recognized him immediately.

Victor Hale.

He looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

Then smiled.

“Emma.””

My blood ran cold.

“How do you know my name?””

He smiled wider.

“Because I’ve known about you your entire life.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stay away from her.””

Victor laughed softly.

“Still pretending you’re the hero?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Victor looked at me.

“Your father told you a story.””

I stared.

“What story?””

“The story where Daniel ruined everything.””

My heart pounded.

“And you’re saying that’s not true?””

Victor smiled.

“I’m saying you don’t know what your mother did.””

Everyone froze.

My mother whispered:

“No.””

Victor looked at her.

“Tell her.””

I turned slowly.

“Tell me what?””

My mother looked terrified.

Victor took one step forward.

“Tell Emma why her wedding money originally came from a secret account.””

My face went pale.

“What secret account?””

Nobody answered.

May you like

Then Victor said:

“The account your mother created.””
