Chapter 1: The Day Before the Walk Down the Aisle

“Your biological father can walk you down the aisle if that’s what you want. But don’t expect me to pretend I’m still your father afterward.””

Those were the words my stepfather said to me twenty-four hours before my wedding.

I had imagined the night before my wedding a hundred times.

I imagined my dress hanging beside my bedroom window. I imagined my mother crying while helping me fix my veil. I imagined my stepfather, Daniel, standing proudly at the end of the church aisle, waiting for me like he had promised since I was twelve.

Instead, I stood in his home office, staring at a check that would change everything.

Forty thousand dollars.

The exact amount he had promised to pay for my wedding.

The amount that had suddenly become a weapon.

Three months earlier, I had sat across from Daniel at the kitchen table while he reviewed the wedding plans with me.

“Don’t worry about the venue,” he had said, tapping the folder in front of him.

“I told you I’d take care of it.””

I smiled because that was the kind of father I believed he was.

“Are you sure? It’s a lot of money.””

Daniel leaned back in his chair and laughed softly.

“Emma, I’ve spent twenty years taking care of you. This is nothing.””

Twenty years.

That number mattered to me.

Daniel entered my life when I was seven years old. My biological father, Richard, disappeared after my parents divorced. He sent birthday cards sometimes, made promises occasionally, but he was never there when I needed him.

Daniel was.

He taught me how to ride a bike.

He sat beside my hospital bed when I had my appendix removed.

He helped me practice driving until I stopped shaking behind the wheel.

When I got engaged to Michael, Daniel hugged me so tightly I thought my ribs would crack.

“I always wondered if I’d get to see this day,” he whispered.

That was why his silence hurt more than his anger.

The night before my wedding, I walked into his office expecting a normal conversation.

I expected him to ask about the ceremony.

I expected him to tell me he was proud.

Instead, he looked at me from behind his desk with a cold expression I had never seen before.

“Daniel?”” I asked carefully.

“Are you okay?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“The church called earlier. They just wanted to confirm the schedule for tomorrow.””

Still nothing.

Then I smiled nervously.

“I was thinking… maybe when we get to the aisle, my dad could—”

Daniel’s eyes lifted.

“My dad?””

I froze.

I knew exactly what he meant.

“My biological father,” I said quietly.

“Richard called yesterday. He asked if he could walk me in.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Daniel slowly stood up.

“You’re letting him do that?””

His voice wasn’t loud.

That made it worse.

“I thought… I thought it might be meaningful,” I said.

“He missed so much of my life. I thought maybe this could be a chance to—”

“A chance to what?”” Daniel interrupted.

I swallowed.

“To make peace.””

Daniel stared at me.

Then he walked toward his desk drawer.

“Do you know what’s interesting, Emma?””

I didn’t answer.

“You said ‘my dad.’”

My heart sank.

“I didn’t mean—”

“No. You did.””

He opened the drawer and pulled out a folder.

“You know what I did for you? I paid for your education. I helped you buy your first car. I stayed up all night when you were sick.””

“I know.””

“No, I don’t think you do.””

His words hit harder because they were true.

“I’m grateful,” I whispered.

Daniel placed the folder on the desk.

“Grateful people don’t replace the person who raised them.””

My eyes burned.

“I’m not replacing you.””

He looked away.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“Then why does he get the moment?””

I had no answer.

Because honestly, I didn’t know.

I wanted my biological father there because a part of me still wanted the childhood I never had.

But I never wanted Daniel to feel like he didn’t matter.

“Daniel, please,” I said.

“You are my father in every way that counts.””

For a moment, I thought he softened.

Then he reached into the folder.

And placed a check on the desk.

The number stared back at me.

$40,000.

I looked from the check to him.

“What is this?””

“The wedding money.””

My smile disappeared.

“Daniel…”

He folded his arms.

“That money was supposed to pay for the wedding. The venue, catering, everything.””

“Yes.””

“Now it’s Richard’s turn.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He pointed at the check.

“Give it to him. Let him pay for the wedding.””

I stared at him in disbelief.

“You’re serious?””

“Completely.””

The air between us became unbearable.

“After everything?”” I whispered.

Daniel’s face remained emotionless.

“After everything, you made your choice.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“Daniel, tomorrow is my wedding.””

“I know.””

“And you’re doing this now?””

He looked at me.

“You did this now.””

My phone suddenly rang.

The sound echoed through the office.

I wiped my face quickly and looked down.

It was the wedding venue manager.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Hi, Emma. I’m sorry to bother you the night before your ceremony, but we need to confirm something immediately.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Confirm what?””

There was a pause.

Then the manager lowered her voice.

“The payment authorization has been canceled.””

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t move.

“What payment authorization?””

“The full wedding balance.””

My heartbeat became louder.

“I’m sorry. What are you saying?””

The manager hesitated.

“Emma… the venue has not been paid.””

My hand went cold.

“But that’s impossible.””

“I’m looking at the account right now.””

The room spun.

“Who canceled it?””

Another pause.

Then she answered.

“The person who made the payment.””

I slowly turned toward Daniel.

He was still standing there.

Watching me.

May you like

And then the manager said the words that made my entire wedding day collapse before it even began.

“Emma, the payment was canceled by Daniel Carter.””
