Chapter 7: The Truth Standing Beside Me

The lights came back three seconds later.

But those three seconds changed everything.

Vanessa was no longer beside the fountain.

She was standing directly behind me, one hand gripping my shoulder and the other holding something metallic.

Ethan stood near the marble table.

Robert was beside the door.

And on the table, where Ethan had placed the brown envelope, there was now nothing.

“Where is it?”” I demanded.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“She has it.””

I spun around.

“What?””

Vanessa stepped away from me.

“Don't listen to him.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You still think you can play the frightened wife?””

“Shut up, Ethan!””

My father moved between them.

“Enough. Nobody is leaving until we know what is in that envelope.””

Vanessa slipped the metallic object into her coat pocket.

I caught the movement.

“What are you holding?””

“Nothing.””

“Show me.””

She shook her head.

“Marcus, please. This man is dangerous.””

Ethan raised both hands.

“I'm holding nothing, Marcus. But your wife has something that belongs to your family.””

I looked at Robert.

“What's in the envelope?””

He hesitated.

“The original estate agreement. And a letter from your grandfather.””

I turned back toward Vanessa.

“Give it to me.””

She backed toward the conservatory doors.

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

“You don't understand what happens if you read that letter.””

“I'm getting very tired of hearing that.””

She looked at Robert.

“You told me it was destroyed.””

My father went pale.

I stared at him.

“What was destroyed?””

Robert slowly lowered his head.

“The original agreement was supposed to remain in the family archive.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Tell him the rest.””

My father looked at him.

“Not now.””

“Now, Robert. You've had thirty years.””

I felt as though I were watching two strangers argue over a life I had never been allowed to understand.

“Dad, what are they talking about?””

Robert finally faced me.

“When your grandfather died, he left instructions concerning the estate. Ethan was named as one of the beneficiaries.””

“I know that.””

“No, Marcus. You don't know everything.””

He took a breath.

“Your grandfather wanted both of his grandsons to receive equal shares. He believed the family would eventually come together.””

Ethan gave a bitter smile.

“Your father had other plans.””

Robert continued.

“After your grandfather's death, I discovered that Ethan had been accessing financial records without permission. There were missing documents and unauthorized withdrawals. I was afraid he would destroy what the family had built.””

“So you removed him from the estate?””

“I tried to reach an agreement with him.””

Ethan laughed.

“You offered me money to disappear.””

“I offered you a settlement.””

“You offered me silence.””

I stepped toward my father.

“Did you change the will?””

Robert nodded.

“I signed an agreement that transferred control of the disputed estate into a protected foundation trust.””

“And did Ethan agree?””

“No.””

Ethan pointed at him.

“Because he knew I never signed it.””

I looked at Robert.

“Was the agreement legal?””

My father didn't answer immediately.

“That isn't a simple question.””

“It's a very simple question.””

Robert's jaw tightened.

“The document was prepared by our legal department. But there were problems with the consent process.””

“Meaning?””

“Ethan was never given an opportunity to review the final version.””

I looked toward Ethan.

“And you've known this all along?””

“Yes,” he replied.

“Then why didn't you come to me?””

He stared at me.

“Because your father made sure I could never get near you.””

Robert shook his head.

“I never stopped you from contacting Marcus.””

“You told the staff I was a disgraced employee. You told the board I was unstable. You made sure every door closed when I knocked.””

Ethan's voice cracked.

For the first time, I wondered how many years he'd spent being angry.

I turned toward Robert.

“Did you tell me he was your son?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

The answer was so quiet that I almost missed it.

My father looked at the photograph still lying on the table.

“Your mother knew about Ethan. She knew I had another child before we married. She asked me to keep my promise to Claire and provide for him. I failed both of them.””

I stared at him.

“Mom knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me grow up believing I was your only son.””

“I thought I was protecting the family.””

I shook my head.

“That's what everyone keeps saying.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It was a short, sharp sound.

“How touching.””

I turned.

She was wiping her eyes.

“Thirty years of secrets, and now everyone wants to pretend they're the victims.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Don't forget who came looking for me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Ethan reached into his coat and removed his phone.

He opened a message thread and held it toward me.

The first message was dated seven months earlier.

It was from Vanessa.

*I know who you are. I know what Robert took from you. I can help you get it back.*

I looked at the message.

Then at my wife.

“You contacted him?””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“I was trying to find the truth.””

Ethan continued.

“She sent me copies of the company accounts. She told me where the original will was stored. She knew about the money before Daniel and I ever spoke.””

I scrolled through the messages.

There were dozens.

Photographs of documents.

Account numbers.

Meeting locations.

And one message that made my stomach turn.

*Once Marcus believes Robert attacked me, he won't question anything. We can get into the office, move the money, and finish the transfer before anyone understands what's happening.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“You planned the accusation before tonight?””

She didn't answer.

Ethan stepped forward.

“She started the whole thing.””

Robert stared at her.

“And you brought my son into it.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“You think you're innocent, Ethan?””

He went still.

She pointed at him.

“You agreed to help me. You wanted the money just as much as I did.””

Ethan lowered his phone.

“I wanted what belonged to me.””

“You wanted forty million dollars!””

“And you wanted Marcus's company.””

I looked between them.

“Enough!””

Both stopped.

I turned to Vanessa.

“Did you contact Ethan before you married me?””

She shook her head.

“That's not what happened.””

“Answer me.””

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

I felt something break inside my chest.

“When?””

“Three weeks before the wedding.””

I stared at her.

“So you knew who he was before you married me.””

“I didn't know everything then.””

“But you knew enough.””

She began crying again.

“I loved you, Marcus.””

I stepped back.

“Don't use that word.””

She covered her mouth.

Robert moved closer to me.

“Son, there's something else.””

I turned.

“What now?””

He looked toward Ethan.

“Your grandfather's letter contains a condition that neither Ethan nor Vanessa has mentioned.””

Ethan's expression changed.

Robert continued.

“Your grandfather left instructions that if anyone falsified estate documents or stole from the family foundation, their inheritance would be forfeited.””

I looked at Ethan.

His face had gone completely still.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

She was no longer crying.

“That's why you needed the letter,” I whispered.

Ethan didn't deny it.

He simply held out his hand.

“Give me the envelope, Vanessa.””

She backed away.

“No.””

“Give it to me.””

“I said no!””

She suddenly pulled the metallic object from her pocket.

It was a small key.

She held it up.

“I have the original file, and I have the access code. Without me, neither of you can prove anything.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Vanessa, put the key down.””

She shook her head.

Then her eyes settled on me.

“Marcus, you have one chance to come with me.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“We leave tonight. I'll tell you everything. We'll take the money, start over, and raise the baby together.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“You want me to run away with you?””

“I want to save our marriage.””

“You destroyed it.””

She took another step toward the exit.

Then she said something that made Ethan's expression change.

“Besides, Marcus, you still don't know what your grandfather wrote about you.””

Robert moved suddenly.

“Vanessa, don't!””

But she was already smiling.

She lifted the key.

“Your father isn't the only person who has been keeping secrets.””

Then the conservatory doors opened behind her.

May you like

Daniel walked in.

And he was holding a gun.
