Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Cameras
The alarm continued screaming.
Red lights flashed above the security office, and the ballroom erupted into confusion. Guests abandoned their conversations. A waiter dropped a tray. Somewhere near the entrance, a woman shouted that the building was being robbed.
I barely heard any of it.
I was staring at the black monitor.
Every camera had gone dark at exactly the same moment.
“Dad,” I said, “what do you mean the camera recorded Daniel?””
Robert didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the corridor.
“We need to get to that security office before he leaves.””
I started moving.
Vanessa caught my arm.
“Marcus, don't go anywhere with him.””
I turned.
“Why?””
“Because he's manipulating you. Don't you see? He wants you to believe Daniel is involved so you won't question what he's done.””
Robert looked at her.
“You should be more careful with your words, Vanessa.””
She stiffened.
“Or what?””
“Or you'll make this even worse for yourself.””
I pulled my arm free.
“Stay here.””
“Marcus!””
I didn't look back.
My father walked beside me, moving faster than I'd seen him move in years. We passed the catering kitchen, pushed through the service doors, and reached the narrow corridor leading to the security room.
The door was open.
Daniel's tablet lay on the desk.
His jacket was draped over the back of the chair.
But Daniel was gone.
I stepped inside.
“What happened?””
Robert pointed toward the wall.
The main security cabinet stood open. Several cables had been pulled out, and the recording unit was missing.
“Someone removed the hard drive,” he said.
I stared at the empty space.
“Could the system have failed?””
“No.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I installed the backup system myself.””
He crouched beside the cabinet and examined the wires.
“Someone deliberately disabled the cameras. This wasn't a technical failure.””
I looked at the desk.
Daniel's tablet was still there.
I picked it up.
The screen showed a message.
*SYSTEM OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL. RECORDING PAUSED.*
My fingers tightened around the device.
“Daniel had access to everything.””
“Yes,” Robert replied.
“Then why did you keep him around?””
My father stood slowly.
“Because I needed proof.””
“You knew he was involved?””
“I suspected it.””
I stared at him.
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I tried to tell you about the missing money. You wouldn't listen.””
The words hurt because they were true.
I'd spent months defending Vanessa against my father. I'd interpreted every warning as another attempt to control my marriage.
Now, I couldn't even look him in the eyes.
“Where is the backup system?”” I asked.
Robert glanced at the ceiling.
“There's an independent recorder in the old foundation office. It runs separately from the ballroom network.””
“Then let's get it.””
He nodded.
We were halfway down the corridor when someone appeared at the other end.
Daniel.
He was carrying a black leather case.
When he saw us, he stopped.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then Daniel turned and ran.
“Daniel!”” I shouted.
He sprinted toward the kitchen entrance.
I chased him.
My shoes slipped slightly on the polished floor, but I caught up as he reached the service exit. I grabbed the back of his jacket.
He spun around, swinging his arm.
The case struck my shoulder.
“Let go!”” he shouted.
I stumbled but held on.
“What the hell are you doing?””
“Get off me!””
Robert appeared behind us.
“Daniel, put the case down.””
Daniel looked at him.
His expression changed.
“You shouldn't have brought him into this.””
My father stepped closer.
“You did this to yourself.””
Daniel let out a bitter laugh.
“Don't pretend you're innocent, Robert.””
I shoved him against the wall.
“Tell me what those signatures mean.””
Daniel stared at me.
“You really think you're the victim here?””
“What?””
“You had access to the accounts. You approved the transfers. You signed every document.””
“I never approved those transfers!””
“That's what you'll tell the police?””
I froze.
Daniel looked down at my hands gripping his jacket.
“You have no idea how convenient this is for Vanessa.””
Robert reached for the case.
Daniel jerked away.
“Don't touch it!””
“What are you hiding?”” I demanded.
He glanced toward the ballroom.
Then he did something unexpected.
He smiled.
“You should ask your wife.””
Before I could respond, a security guard came rushing around the corner.
“Mr. Hale! Is everything all right?””
Daniel seized the opportunity.
He twisted free and ran through the open kitchen door.
The guard tried to stop him, but Daniel shoved a trolley into his path. Metal pans crashed across the floor.
By the time we reached the exit, Daniel was gone.
The black case remained on the ground.
I picked it up.
Its lock was damaged, and the lid had popped open.
Inside was a stack of bank statements, a USB drive, and several photographs.
I pulled out the photographs first.
The first showed Daniel standing beside Vanessa outside a restaurant.
They were smiling.
His hand rested on her lower back.
The second showed them entering a hotel.
The third was dated three months earlier.
Vanessa was kissing him.
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
My father stood beside me.
“I'm sorry, son.””
I looked at him.
“How long?””
Robert lowered his eyes.
“I don't know.””
“You knew they were together?””
“I found those photographs last week.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I wanted to make sure they were real.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“You keep saying you wanted to protect me.””
“I did.””
“By letting me sleep beside a woman who was betraying me?””
Robert's expression tightened.
“I know how that sounds.””
“No, Dad. You don't.””
I turned away.
For a moment, all I could hear was the alarm.
Then I noticed something in the photographs.
The restaurant.
I recognized it.
It was the same place Vanessa and I had celebrated our first wedding anniversary.
She had told me that evening she was exhausted from work and wanted an early night.
I'd gone alone to meet a business partner.
Apparently, she hadn't gone home.
I put the photographs back.
“There's more,” I said.
I reached into the case and removed the USB drive.
Robert nodded.
“Take it to the old office. The backup recorder should still have the original footage.””
We returned to the ballroom.
Vanessa was no longer on the sofa.
Emily stood near the windows, looking worried.
“Where's Vanessa?”” I asked.
“She said she needed the restroom.””
“When?””
“Just now.””
I looked toward the entrance.
The double doors were still open. Guests were beginning to leave, their faces twisted with curiosity.
“Did she take her handbag?””
Emily nodded.
“She was carrying it when she left.””
I looked at Robert.
“She knows we have the photographs.””
“Then she knows we're getting closer.””
We hurried toward the old foundation office.
It was located in the eastern wing, behind a locked door that had once belonged to my grandfather. The room smelled of dust, old paper, and furniture polish.
Robert unlocked it.
Inside stood a large wooden desk, a filing cabinet, and an old computer connected to a separate recording unit.
He switched on the monitor.
A small green light appeared.
“It's still running,” he said.
I inserted the USB drive.
The screen filled with folders.
One was labeled *OCTOBER RECORDINGS*.
Another was labeled *FINANCIAL ACCESS*.
I opened the second folder.
A list of names appeared.
Robert Hale.
Marcus Hale.
Daniel Price.
Vanessa Mercer.
And one more.
I clicked it.
The file contained a recorded conversation.
The timestamp was from three weeks earlier.
I pressed play.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
“We can't keep moving the money through the same account.””
Vanessa answered.
“Then use Marcus's investment company.””
“He'll notice eventually.””
“Not before the transfer clears.””
“What about Robert?””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Robert will be too busy defending himself.””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“And if Marcus finds out about us?””
A pause followed.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood turn cold.
“By the time he finds out, I'll own half of everything he has.””
I stopped the recording.
My father closed his eyes.
I stared at the screen.
Half of everything I had.
Not half the money in the foundation.
Not half the investments.
Everything.
“Keep going,” Robert said quietly.
I pressed play again.
Daniel asked, “And the marriage?””
Vanessa replied, “I'll file for divorce after the transfer. He'll be too embarrassed to fight me.””
Daniel laughed.
“What if he doesn't sign?””
“Then I'll show him what happens when he refuses to protect me.””
My chest tightened.
The recording continued.
Then Daniel asked the question I hadn't expected.
“What about the child?””
Silence.
Vanessa's voice returned.
“The child isn't his problem.””
I went completely still.
My father looked at me.
I couldn't speak.
Daniel spoke again.
“Are you sure?””
Vanessa answered without hesitation.
“Marcus will never know.””
The recording ended.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the hum of the old computer.
Then I looked at my father.
“What child?””
Robert shook his head.
“I don't know.””
I stared at the frozen screen.
My wife had stolen from the charity.
She had forged my signature.
She had been sleeping with Daniel.
And now there was a child.
A child she had hidden from me.
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from Vanessa.
*Marcus, I know what you saw. Please don't believe everything Daniel says. Meet me alone. There's something about the baby you need to understand.*
I read it twice.
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*And Marcus? Whatever you do, don't let your father tell you who the child's real father is.*
