Chapter 3: The Signature on the Money

“Show me the document,” I said.

Daniel didn't move.

“Marcus, you should speak to your father first.””

“I asked you to show me the document.””

He placed his tablet on the desk and opened a folder labeled FOUNDATION REVIEW.

There were spreadsheets, bank statements, payment approvals, and scanned authorization forms.

I scrolled through them.

At first, the numbers looked like meaningless rows of figures.

Then I saw the amount.

$85,000.

A week later, another transfer.

$120,000.

Then $210,000.

The payments continued across eleven months.

I leaned back.

“That's more than a million dollars.””

“Just under two million,” Daniel said.

“Where did it go?””

“A company called V.M. Consulting.””

I stared at the name.

Vanessa Mercer.

My wife's maiden name.

“Does that company belong to her?””

“According to the registration documents, yes.””

“Who owns the bank account?””

“She does.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

The room seemed smaller.

My wife had been accusing my father of being controlling, cruel, and dishonest.

Meanwhile, she had been taking money from the charity he had spent decades building.

“Why didn't you report this?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I wanted to make sure the documents were genuine. Some of the approvals carried your digital signature.””

I looked up sharply.

“My signature?””

He nodded.

I opened one of the scanned forms.

There it was.

Marcus Hale.

My electronic signature sat beneath a transfer approval for $210,000.

I stared at it.

I had never approved that payment.

“Did you tell Robert?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

“He said he wanted to speak to you privately, without involving the board or the police until we knew exactly what had happened.””

I looked at the date.

The approval had been recorded seven months earlier.

That was three months after I had given Vanessa access to our household accounts so she could help manage the foundation's annual fundraising expenses.

My stomach tightened.

“Could she have used my login?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“It's possible.””

“Why didn't you lock it?””

“We didn't know the credentials had been compromised.””

I gripped the edge of the desk.

“Daniel, how much did my father know?””

“Enough to suspect her.””

“And tonight?””

“He came to me around eight. He said he had found another document that connected the transfers to your wife's company. He wanted to confront her.””

I frowned.

“Why would he put the report beneath the collection box?””

“Because the study was being used for the donor meeting earlier. He didn't want it left there where anyone could find it. He planned to give it to you after the speeches.””

I remembered the envelope Vanessa had taken.

The red seal.

The way she'd looked at the camera.

“Why did she go to his study?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.””

I sat silently for a moment.

Then I stood.

“Get me a copy of every document. Don't alert anyone else.””

“Marcus, I need to warn you about something.””

I turned.

“What?””

Daniel looked toward the security monitors.

“The transfers didn't all go to V.M. Consulting.””

My jaw tightened.

“Where did the rest go?””

He opened another page.

A list of account numbers appeared.

Three transfers had been sent to a separate company.

Hale Meridian Holdings.

My own investment firm.

I stared at the name.

“That company belongs to us.””

“Yes.””

“Who authorized those payments?””

Daniel enlarged the documents.

The first two had my signature.

The third had my father's.

I shook my head.

“This makes no sense.””

“Robert says he never signed that third approval.””

“Then someone forged it.””

Daniel nodded.

“That's what I believe.””

I looked at the numbers.

The transfers into my company totaled $460,000.

The money had been moved through an account I barely used, then transferred into a private investment portfolio.

One I had created before meeting Vanessa.

“Who has access to this account?””

“Only you and the administrator.””

“Who is the administrator?””

Daniel hesitated.

I looked up.

“Daniel.””

He slowly folded his arms.

“Vanessa requested administrative access last spring. She said she was consolidating the family's investment records.””

I felt the room tilt.

“You gave it to her?””

“She had your authorization.””

“I never gave her permission.””

Daniel looked genuinely shaken.

“Then someone used your name.””

I paced toward the door.

“Where is she?””

“Back in the ballroom, I think.””

I stopped.

“Don't tell her we've seen the footage.””

Daniel nodded.

I returned the tablet.

“Save everything. And send a copy to my personal email.””

He hesitated.

“Marcus, are you sure you want to do this tonight?””

I looked at the documents again.

“My father was accused of attacking my wife in front of a hundred people. I'm going to find out exactly what happened.””

Daniel's expression softened.

“Then you should hear the rest from Robert.””

I left the security office.

The corridor smelled of roasted garlic and fresh bread. Catering staff hurried past with trays, unaware that the family hosting the evening's fundraiser was falling apart behind closed doors.

When I entered the ballroom, Vanessa was sitting on the velvet sofa.

Emily was beside her, holding a glass of water.

Vanessa looked up.

“Marcus.””

I walked toward her.

She stood and reached for my hand.

“Where have you been?””

“Working.””

“Your father is still here. I asked the staff to make him leave, but nobody will listen.””

I stared at her.

“You asked them to remove him?””

“He attacked me!””

“Did he?””

Her expression hardened.

“Don't start.””

“Don't start what?””

“Interrogating me like I'm on trial.””

I looked at the torn shoulder of her dress.

The cut was uneven, but I could now see the clean little marks left by the scissors.

My wife followed my gaze and pulled the fabric together.

“What?”” she asked.

“Nothing.””

“Marcus, I need you to believe me.””

“I've spent eleven months believing you.””

She frowned.

“What does that mean?””

I leaned closer.

“Where is the white envelope?””

Her face changed.

“What envelope?””

“The one you took from beneath the collection box.””

For the first time, she had no immediate answer.

Emily looked between us.

“Vanessa?”” she asked.

My wife recovered quickly.

“I don't know what he's talking about.””

“Then you won't mind telling me why the security footage shows you taking it.””

She stepped back.

“You watched the cameras?””

“Yes.””

“Without my permission?””

I almost laughed.

“You accused my father of assault. What permission did I need?””

Her eyes filled with tears again.

“You're choosing him over me.””

“No. I'm choosing to find out what happened.””

She shook her head.

“He's always wanted to destroy us.””

“That's interesting.””

“What?””

“Because the footage shows you cutting your own dress.””

The glass in her hand slipped.

It hit the floor and broke.

Emily jumped up.

“Oh my God!””

Vanessa looked down at the broken glass.

Then she looked at me.

For a moment, the mask completely disappeared.

“What exactly did you see?”” she whispered.

I didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

“Marcus, listen to me. There's a reason I did what I did.””

I stared at her.

“You staged an assault?””

“I had no choice.””

“You accused my father of hurting you!””

“He was going to ruin everything!””

“What everything?””

She closed her eyes.

I waited.

When she opened them again, her voice was low.

“Your father was going to take the money.””

I stared at her.

“What money?””

“The money from the foundation.””

“That's charity money.””

“He was moving it!””

“Into what?””

She shook her head.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

“He planned to blame me for everything. He knew you would never forgive me if you saw those documents.””

I took one step closer.

“Then why did the documents show transfers to your company?””

Her silence was answer enough.

I looked toward the double doors.

My father stood there.

He had heard us.

His hands were folded in front of him, and his face was lined with exhaustion.

“Marcus,” he said, “bring her to the study.””

Vanessa immediately stepped behind me.

“No.””

My father looked at her.

“It's time.””

She shook her head.

“You promised you wouldn't show him.””

I turned slowly.

“Who promised?””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

She realized her mistake.

Then she grabbed my wrist.

“Marcus, please. You have to listen.””

I pulled away.

“Who promised you?””

Her breathing became shallow.

Robert stepped forward.

“Son, there's something else you need to know.””

I looked at him.

He swallowed.

“The envelope wasn't the only thing she took tonight.””

“What else?””

My father reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

It was the same kind of document I'd seen on Daniel's tablet.

A bank authorization form.

He held it out to me.

“Look at the second signature.””

I took the paper.

The first signature belonged to me.

The second belonged to someone who had approved the transfer after I supposedly authorized it.

I read the name twice.

Then I looked up at my father.

“That can't be right.””

“It is.””

Vanessa started shaking her head.

“Don't listen to him.””

I looked at the signature again.

It belonged to Daniel Price.

My father's most trusted financial officer.

The man who had just shown me the footage.

The man who had told me he knew nothing about the missing money.

I turned toward the security office.

“Call Daniel.””

My father caught my arm.

“Marcus, don't.””

“Why?””

Robert looked directly into my eyes.

“Because the camera recorded him too.””

A silence fell between us.

May you like

Then, from the direction of the security office, a sharp electronic alarm began to sound.

And when I looked at the monitor above the ballroom entrance, every camera feed went black.
