Chapter 6: The Son My Father Hid
For a long moment, I couldn't hear anything except the fountain.
I stared at Vanessa.
“My father has another son?””
She nodded.
“How do you know that?””
“Because I met him.””
“When?””
“The night before our wedding.””
I shook my head.
“My father was with me that entire evening.””
“Not the whole evening.””
I remembered the night.
The rehearsal dinner had ended around ten. My father had left early, claiming he needed to speak with a business associate.
I'd thought nothing of it.
He was always working.
Vanessa took a trembling breath.
“He met us at a hotel.””
“Us?””
“Me and the other man.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“What is his name?””
“Ethan.””
The name meant nothing to me.
“Ethan what?””
“Ethan Hale.””
I almost laughed.
“That's impossible.””
“It's true.””
“My mother died twenty years ago. My father never remarried.””
“He didn't have to.””
I took a step closer.
“Are you telling me my father had another family?””
Vanessa looked down.
“He had another son before your mother died.””
The room seemed to spin.
“Before my mother died?””
She nodded.
“How old is he?””
“Thirty-four.””
I stared at her.
I was thirty-six.
That meant Ethan was only two years younger than me.
“Why haven't I ever heard of him?””
“Because your father doesn't want you to know.””
“That's not an answer.””
“Your father paid his mother to stay away.””
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
“Who was his mother?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I don't know her full name.””
“Then how do you know any of this?””
“Ethan showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
“Birth records. Old letters. Bank transfers.””
I shook my head.
“Why would he show you?””
“Because he needed help.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course he did.””
Vanessa reached for my hand.
“Marcus, listen. Ethan told me Robert had been hiding money from the family for years. He said the foundation was being used to move funds into another account.””
I looked at her.
“And you believed him?””
“He had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
She hesitated.
Then she reached into her coat again and pulled out a photograph.
It was old.
The edges were yellowed, and the colors had faded.
A younger Robert stood beside a woman in a blue dress. He looked to be in his early thirties, perhaps younger.
Between them stood a little boy.
The child's hair was dark, and he wore a red sweater.
My father's hand rested on his shoulder.
I stared at the photograph.
“That is my father.””
“Yes.””
“Who is the child?””
“Ethan.””
I turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
*Robert, Claire, and Ethan — Christmas 1994.*
I read the words twice.
My father had been seeing someone named Claire.
And they had a son.
Before my mother died.
I felt suddenly exhausted.
“Where is Ethan now?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you meet him again?””
She nodded.
“When?””
“Two months ago.””
“Where?””
“At Daniel's office.””
I looked at her.
“Why would Daniel know him?””
“Because Ethan used to work for the family company.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He was a financial analyst. Your father hired him years ago, then fired him.””
I tried to remember every employee who had worked under Robert.
There had been hundreds.
But I had never heard the name Ethan Hale.
“Why was he fired?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He found something.””
“What?””
“Transfers.””
I stared at her.
“Transfers from the foundation?””
“Yes.””
“Into Robert's private accounts?””
She nodded.
My father's accusation had always been that Vanessa and Daniel were stealing.
But now she was suggesting he had been doing the same thing.
“Why would Ethan come to you instead of me?””
“Because he didn't trust you.””
“Why?””
“Because he thinks you're your father's favorite.””
I looked at the photograph again.
A child.
A woman.
My father.
It was impossible to reconcile that image with the man who had raised me.
“Where are the documents?”” I asked.
Vanessa glanced toward the exit.
“I don't have them.””
“Who does?””
“Ethan.””
“Then we find him.””
She nodded.
But before I could say anything else, the conservatory doors opened.
My father stood in the doorway.
His expression was grim.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
“Is it true?””
Robert looked at Vanessa.
“What has she told you?””
“That you have another son.””
My father went still.
He didn't deny it.
That was enough.
I felt a bitter laugh rising in my chest.
“You kept a son hidden from me for thirty years?””
Robert looked down.
“It's not as simple as that.””
“Then make it simple.””
He entered the conservatory and closed the doors behind him.
Vanessa stepped away from me.
Robert looked at the photograph in my hand.
For a moment, the color drained from his face.
“Where did you get that?””
“Vanessa.””
He glanced at her.
“She shouldn't have that.””
“Why?””
“Because she doesn't understand what it means.””
I lifted the photograph.
“Then explain it to me.””
Robert rubbed his jaw.
“Her name was Claire Bennett. I met her before I met your mother. We were together for a while, but things ended badly.””
“And Ethan?””
“He was born after we separated.””
“You knew about him?””
“Yes.””
“And you hid him?””
Robert looked at me.
“I never denied his existence.””
“You certainly never mentioned him!””
“I wanted to protect you.””
I let out a short laugh.
“Everyone in this family seems to use that excuse.””
Robert's face tightened.
“Marcus, there are things about Ethan that you don't understand.””
“Then tell me.””
He took a breath.
“Ethan was angry. He believed I abandoned him. His mother told him that I had chosen you and your mother over him.””
“Did you?””
Robert looked away.
“I made mistakes.””
“That's not an answer.””
“I provided for him financially. I paid for his education. I offered him a job.””
“And then fired him?””
Robert's eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“Who told you that?””
“She did.””
“Ethan was fired because he stole confidential financial records.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“That's a lie.””
Robert ignored her.
“He copied several internal documents and threatened to expose the company unless I gave him control of part of the foundation.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I thought I could settle it privately.””
“You thought you could settle everything privately!””
My father flinched.
I paced toward the windows.
“Was Ethan involved with the missing money?””
Robert nodded slowly.
“I believe he was.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“He wasn't stealing. He was trying to recover what belonged to him.””
“Recover what?”” I demanded.
“His inheritance.””
I turned.
“What inheritance?””
She looked at Robert.
“Tell him.””
My father remained silent.
“Tell him what?”” I asked.
Vanessa spoke first.
“Your grandfather left an equal share of the family estate to both sons.””
I stared at her.
“That's impossible. My grandfather died before Ethan was born.””
“Not before he knew about him.””
Robert's expression hardened.
“Vanessa, stop.””
But she continued.
“Your grandfather made changes to his will. Ethan was supposed to receive half the family's private holdings. Your father never told anyone.””
I looked at my father.
“Is that true?””
He took a long breath.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“How much?””
Robert looked at the floor.
“Approximately forty million dollars in assets at the time.””
I stared at him.
“Forty million?””
“Most of it has been reinvested.””
“And Ethan knows?””
“He knows.””
“Then why hasn't he challenged the will?””
“Because I was appointed executor. I explained that the will had been superseded by a later estate agreement.””
Vanessa laughed.
“An agreement he never signed.””
Robert turned sharply.
“That's enough.””
I stepped between them.
“Show me the agreement.””
My father hesitated.
“I don't have it with me.””
“Where is it?””
“In my office.””
“Then we're going there.””
Robert looked at me.
“Marcus, you need to understand something. Ethan has been working with Daniel. He may have approached Vanessa because he wanted access to the family accounts.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's not true.””
“Then why did you meet him?””
She opened her mouth.
No answer came.
Robert stepped closer.
“He wanted the original will.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you take it?””
She lowered her eyes.
My father closed his eyes briefly.
“Marcus, the document was missing before tonight.””
I looked at him.
“Missing?””
“Someone entered my office last week. They opened the safe and removed the original estate file.””
I felt the pieces shifting.
The envelope.
The missing financial report.
The three-million-dollar transfer.
The hidden son.
The inheritance.
It was no longer just a story about a woman stealing from a charity.
Someone had been trying to take control of the Hale family's entire estate.
And Vanessa had been part of it.
“Why would Ethan need the original will?”” I asked.
Robert looked at me.
“Because the original contains something the new agreement doesn't.””
“What?””
My father hesitated.
Then he said, “A condition.””
Vanessa suddenly looked frightened.
I turned toward her.
“What condition?””
Robert answered.
“If either of my sons challenges the inheritance, the estate passes to the foundation instead.””
I stared at him.
“Then Ethan gets nothing?””
“Unless he can prove the agreement was fraudulent.””
Vanessa whispered, “That's why he needs the original.””
Robert nodded.
“Because the original will names him as an equal beneficiary.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know about the condition?””
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
“Did Ethan ask you to steal the will?””
She swallowed.
“He asked me to find it.””
“And the money?””
“He said it was his.””
I took a slow breath.
“Did you know Daniel was involved?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know they were working together?””
She nodded.
I turned toward my father.
“Then why did you let them get this far?””
Robert looked exhausted.
“Because I didn't know how many people were involved until tonight.””
A noise came from outside the conservatory.
Footsteps.
Then a knock.
Three sharp strikes against the glass.
We all turned.
A man stood on the terrace.
He was tall, with dark hair, a trimmed beard, and a long black coat.
He looked to be in his early thirties.
His eyes moved from Robert to me.
Then he raised one hand.
Vanessa backed away.
“Oh, no.””
Robert's face went pale.
“Ethan.””
The man smiled faintly.
“Hello, Father.””
I stared at him.
My father's other son.
The brother I had never known existed.
Ethan opened the conservatory door and walked inside as if he owned the place.
His gaze settled on me.
“So,” he said, “you're Marcus.””
I didn't move.
“Who are you?””
He smiled.
“I'm the reason your father has been lying to you your entire life.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Ethan, leave.””
But Ethan ignored him.
He reached inside his coat and removed a thick brown envelope.
Then he placed it on the marble table.
“You wanted the truth about the missing money?”” he asked.
He looked directly at me.
“Your father didn't steal it. Vanessa didn't steal all of it. And Daniel wasn't the person who started this.””
I frowned.
“Then who was?””
Ethan's smile disappeared.
He looked at Robert.
Then he looked back at me.
“The person who started everything,” he whispered, “is standing right beside you.””
My eyes moved slowly.
Robert was beside the door.
Vanessa stood near the fountain.
May you like
Ethan was in front of me.
And then the conservatory lights went out.
