Chapter 9: The Final Lie

The man’s name was Victor Hale.

I learned that within the first thirty seconds.

I also learned something else.

He was not some random person threatening Jordan.

He was someone Jasmine had known for years.

Someone connected to her past.

Someone she never mentioned.

“Why are you paying him?”” I asked Jordan.

Jordan looked ashamed.

“I didn’t want this.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

He looked down.

“Because he knew about the accident.””

Victor smiled.

“Your family has a lot of secrets.””

I looked at him.

“You’re the one who threatened my wife.””

“I asked for what I was owed.””

“Owed?””

Victor laughed.

“You rich people always use that word like it only applies to you.””

I stepped closer.

“You forged my signature.””

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

“How did you find that?””

“I found everything.””

Victor glanced at Jordan.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Jordan stepped forward.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Jordan.””

He shook his head.

“This ends tonight.””

Victor smiled.

“You think you’re brave now?””

Jordan’s voice shook.

“I’m tired.””

The words surprised me.

“I’m tired of everyone lying.””

Silence.

Jordan looked at me.

“I was scared.””

I didn’t answer.

“I thought if I told the truth, Malik would hate me.””

My expression softened slightly.

“He deserved the truth.””

“I know.””

“And I deserved to know.””

Jordan nodded.

“I know.””

Victor interrupted.

“This emotional family reunion is touching.””

He pulled out his phone.

“But I still have evidence.””

My body tensed.

“What evidence?””

He smiled.

“Everything.””

He tapped the screen.

“Payments. Messages. Records.””

I stared at him.

“You’ve been collecting proof?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victor looked amused.

“Insurance.””

Then I understood.

He wasn’t just threatening them.

He was protecting himself.

“You knew this would collapse.””

Victor shrugged.

“Eventually.””

I took another step.

“Where is Jasmine?””

Jordan looked at me.

“She left before I came here.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Marcus?””

Jasmine.

Her voice was shaking.

“Where are you?””

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

“Jasmine.””

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I should have trusted you.””

“Yes.””

Her breathing became uneven.

“But I was afraid.””

I looked at Jordan.

Then Victor.

Then the entire mess my family had become.

“Where are you?””

She whispered an address.

“I’m at the old apartment.””

The place where she lived before we married.

I drove there immediately.

When I arrived, she was sitting on the floor surrounded by boxes.

Not designer clothes.

Not luxury items.

Just old photographs.

Old memories.

She looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

“I know you hate me,” she said.

“I don’t hate you.””

She looked up.

“I ruined everything.””

I sat across from her.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You hurt Malik.””

“Yes.””

“You protected Jordan.””

“Yes.””

She cried.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I looked around the apartment.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Victor?””

She wiped her face.

“Because he knew things about me.””

“What things?””

She took a long breath.

“Before I met you, I made mistakes.””

“What kind?””

“I worked with him.””

I frowned.

“Doing what?””

“Financial paperwork.””

The answer was vague.

Too vague.

“Jasmine.””

She looked down.

“I helped people hide money.””

My chest tightened.

“And Victor knew.””

“Yes.””

“He used that against you.””

She nodded.

“When Jordan’s accident happened, Victor found out.””

“And he threatened you.””

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I thought you would look at me the way you’re looking at me now.””

I stayed silent.

Because she was right.

I did.

Not because of her past.

Because of what she chose afterward.

“What happens now?””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

For the first time, I believed her.

The next morning, I made a decision.

I called the police.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because too many secrets had already destroyed my family.

Victor was arrested after investigators reviewed the evidence.

The forged documents.

The threats.

The financial manipulation.

But there was one thing I still needed to understand.

Before everything fell apart, before the lies, before the money disappeared…

Why did Jasmine send Danielle thirty thousand dollars?

I found the answer three days later.

Danielle came to my house with a small envelope.

“I think you need to see this.””

Inside was a letter.

From Jasmine.

But it wasn’t written to me.

It was written to Malik.

I unfolded the paper.

And read the first line.

“Malik, if your father ever finds out what really happened, I need you to know one thing…”

I kept reading.

And by the end of the letter, my hands were shaking.

Because the truth was nothing like I expected.

Jasmine had not only been hiding Jordan’s mistake.

May you like

She had been hiding Malik’s biggest sacrifice.

And my son had known the truth all along.
