Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Spending

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat in my office with the lights off, staring at the city outside my window.

For twenty years, I had worked to create stability.

For my employees.

For my family.

For my children.

But now I was questioning everything.

At 6:12 the next morning, I received a message from an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But then I saw the attached photo.

It was a picture of Jordan.

Standing outside a luxury car dealership.

The caption underneath was simple.

“Ask your wife who paid for this.””

My stomach dropped.

I stared at the screen.

Because I knew that car.

The sports car I helped Jordan purchase two years earlier.

The one Jasmine told me was necessary because he needed reliable transportation.

I opened the message thread.

Another message appeared.

“You think the handbag was the problem?””

My hands went cold.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew.

I immediately called the number.

No answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then the phone rang back.

A woman’s voice answered.

“Marcus?””

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone who thinks you deserve the truth.””

I stood up.

“What truth?””

The woman exhaled.

“Your wife has been lying to you for a long time.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Danielle.””

I froze.

Danielle.

My ex-wife.

Malik’s mother.

“What do you want?””

“I want you to stop pretending everything is fine.””

My jaw tightened.

“You knew about this?””

“I knew Malik was struggling.””

The guilt in her voice was obvious.

“I tried asking him what was wrong. He protected you.””

I closed my eyes.

Again.

My son protected me.

“I’m going to fix this,” I said.

Danielle was quiet.

Then she said:

“Marcus, you need to look deeper than the money.””

“What does that mean?””

“You’re looking at a handbag.””

A pause.

“But the handbag is only the receipt.””

The call ended.

I stood there for several seconds.

Then I opened my laptop.

I started reviewing every financial record from the past three years.

Every transfer.

Every payment.

Every unusual expense.

And slowly, a pattern appeared.

It wasn’t one purchase.

It wasn’t one mistake.

It was thousands of dollars.

Over and over.

Jordan’s expenses.

Private lessons he never attended.

Subscriptions.

Luxury purchases.

Credit card payments.

All hidden under vague descriptions.

My hands shook.

Jasmine wasn’t just taking Malik’s tuition money.

She had been redirecting family money for years.

That afternoon, I came home early.

Jasmine was sitting in the living room.

She looked surprised.

“You’re home.””

I placed the documents on the table.

“We need to talk.””

Her face went pale.

“What is this?””

“You tell me.””

She flipped through the papers.

The silence grew heavier.

Finally, she whispered:

“Marcus…”

“No excuses.””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Not confidence.

Not arrogance.

Panic.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She covered her face with her hands.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””

My voice lowered.

“How was it supposed to happen?””

She didn’t answer.

That scared me more.

“Jasmine.””

She looked up.

“I was trying to help Jordan.””

“By hurting Malik?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But I couldn’t tell if they were real.

“He was in trouble.””

“What kind of trouble?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

“Debt.””

I stared at her.

“How much?””

She didn’t respond.

“Jasmine.””

Her voice broke.

“More than you think.””

The room went silent.

Then the front door opened.

Jordan walked in.

He stopped when he saw the papers on the table.

His face changed.

He knew.

He knew exactly why I was there.

“Dad?”” he said nervously.

I looked at him.

Not as my stepson.

Not as the boy I had tried to help.

But as the person standing at the center of the secret that destroyed my family.

“Jordan,” I said.

He swallowed.

“What did you do?””

His eyes moved to Jasmine.

And in that moment, I realized something terrifying.

My wife wasn’t the only person who had betrayed me.

May you like

Because Jordan’s next words changed everything.

“Mom told me you would never find out.””
