Chapter 6: The Signature I Never Gave

I stared at the document until the words stopped making sense.

My name.

My signature.

My information.

But I had never seen this paper before.

“Marcus,” Danielle said softly.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

She swallowed.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out.””

I looked back at the document.

It was a loan agreement.

A personal guarantee.

A signature claiming I had agreed to take responsibility for a financial obligation.

The amount?

One hundred thousand dollars.

My hands went cold.

“Jasmine did this?””

Danielle didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Danielle.””

She sat down.

“I don’t know exactly what she did.””

“But you know something.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I waited.

Finally, she said:

“Six months ago, Jasmine came to me.””

“Why?””

“She was panicking.””

“About what?””

Danielle looked at the document.

“Jordan.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Jordan.

The name that kept appearing every time another secret surfaced.

“What did she say?””

“She said Jordan had gotten into serious trouble.””

“How serious?””

“She owed people money.””

I looked at her.

“What kind of people?””

Danielle hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

Because she looked like she knew more than she was saying.

“What did she ask you for?””

“Help.””

“Financial help?””

“No.””

Danielle shook her head.

“She asked me to sign something.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She said it was temporary.””

“Did you sign?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because something felt wrong.””

I looked down at the paper.

“So how did this get my signature?””

Danielle looked at me.

“That’s what I was hoping you could answer.””

I felt anger building again.

Not the explosive kind.

The dangerous kind.

The kind that made everything feel clear.

I had spent years giving Jasmine the benefit of the doubt.

Every time someone questioned her motives, I defended her.

Every time something felt strange, I convinced myself I was overthinking.

But now?

There was a forged signature.

A hidden account.

Missing tuition money.

And a trail of lies.

I left Danielle’s house and drove home.

Jasmine was in the living room when I walked inside.

She immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I placed the document on the table.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

“You know what this is.””

She went quiet.

“Jasmine.””

She looked at me.

“I can explain.””

Those words again.

The words people used when the truth was already too ugly.

“Did you forge my signature?””

She looked horrified.

“No.””

“Then why is my name on this?””

She stared at the paper.

“I didn’t forge it.””

“Who did?””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

She shook her head.

“I swear.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She sat down.

“I thought I could fix everything.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

She looked broken.

“I made one bad decision after another.””

“What was this decision?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“I borrowed money.””

“From who?””

She looked at me.

And I saw real fear.

Not the fear of losing our marriage.

The fear of someone else.

“I can’t tell you.””

My anger disappeared.

Replaced by confusion.

“Why?””

“Because they’ll hurt Jordan.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“I promised.””

“To who?””

She didn’t answer.

I stared at her.

“Jasmine, you need to understand something.””

She looked up.

“You already destroyed my trust.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“But if you’re protecting someone dangerous, you’re putting this family in danger.””

She looked away.

And then her phone rang.

The same number from before.

Unknown.

Her entire body froze.

I watched her look at the screen.

Then slowly stand.

“Don’t answer it,” I said.

She stopped.

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Finally, she answered.

“Hello?””

Her face went pale.

I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end.

But I saw Jasmine’s reaction.

Her hand started shaking.

Then she whispered:

“No. Please. Leave my family alone.””

My heart dropped.

Because whoever was calling wasn’t asking for money.

They were making a threat.

Jasmine looked at me.

And in that moment, she finally said the words I had been waiting for.

“Marcus…”

Her voice cracked.

“I need to tell you why Jordan really owes them money.””

I stepped closer.

“Why?””

She looked terrified.

“Because the debt isn’t from gambling.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then what is it from?””

She closed her eyes.

And whispered:

“Jordan was trying to protect someone.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She opened her eyes.

May you like

And said a name I never expected.

“Malik.””
