Chapter 5: The Hidden Account

The question stayed in the air.

Where did the rest go?

Nobody spoke.

Jasmine sat frozen, staring at the floor.

Jordan looked confused.

Even Danielle looked shocked.

I had expected lies.

I had expected excuses.

But I hadn’t expected hesitation.

That was different.

“Jasmine,” I said.

She looked up.

“Where did the rest of the money go?””

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

Finally, she whispered:

“I was trying to fix something.””

I felt my patience disappear.

“You keep saying that.””

I pointed toward the paperwork.

“Fix what?””

She took a deep breath.

“My credit.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“My credit score.””

The room became silent again.

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You used my son’s tuition money to pay your credit cards?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Before we married, I had financial problems.””

I stared at her.

“I knew you had some debt.””

“Not all of it.””

There it was.

Another secret.

“How much?””

She looked away.

“Seventy thousand.””

Jordan looked shocked.

“Mom, you never told me that.””

She ignored him.

“I was embarrassed.””

“So you hid it.””

“I was scared you would leave.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe it.

“You thought hiding seventy thousand dollars of debt was better than telling me?””

“I thought I could handle it.””

“But you didn’t.””

She nodded.

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

For the first time, she wasn’t defending herself.

She was admitting it.

But that didn’t erase what happened.

“You had choices.””

“I know.””

“You could have told me.””

“I know.””

“You could have asked for help.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

I looked at Malik.

He was sitting silently.

Watching the adults around him destroy everything.

And suddenly, I hated that he was there.

Not because of him.

Because he should never have had to witness this.

“Malik,” I said.

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry you had to hear any of this.””

He shook his head.

“It’s okay.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“It isn’t.””

He looked surprised.

“I should have noticed.””

“Dad…”

“I should have seen you were struggling.””

He looked down.

“You were trying.””

“But trying isn’t the same as being there.””

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

That night, after everyone left, I sat alone in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where I had thrown that handbag onto the counter days earlier.

The same kitchen where my marriage started falling apart.

Jasmine came downstairs around midnight.

She looked exhausted.

“I know you hate me right now.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t hate you.””

She looked surprised.

“I don’t know what I feel.””

That was the truth.

Anger was easy.

Hurt was harder.

She sat across from me.

“I never wanted to hurt Malik.””

“But you did.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you stop?””

She stared at her hands.

“Because every time I fixed one problem, another appeared.””

I waited.

“The debt. Jordan. My credit. The lifestyle.””

She looked up.

“I was drowning.””

“And instead of asking for help, you pulled everyone underwater.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

That admission hurt more than another lie would have.

The next morning, I went to the bank.

I needed to know the full damage.

I sat across from the financial manager who had helped me set up the account.

“Marcus,” he said carefully, “there’s something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He turned the monitor toward me.

“There was another transfer.””

My stomach tightened.

“How much?””

“Thirty thousand.””

I stared.

“Where?””

He clicked the transaction.

And my entire body went still.

Because the money didn’t go to Jordan.

It didn’t go toward Jasmine’s debt.

It went to an account I had never seen before.

An account under a name I recognized.

But not one I expected.

I leaned closer.

“Who owns this?””

The manager looked uncomfortable.

“Marcus…”

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Danielle Williams.””

My ex-wife.

My son’s mother.

I stood up.

“No.””

The manager looked confused.

“I’m sorry?””

“That’s impossible.””

But the name was right there.

The account existed.

The transfer was real.

Thirty thousand dollars.

Sent from the same family account.

I drove straight to Danielle’s house.

When she opened the door and saw my face, her expression changed.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

“Explain this.””

She looked at the screen.

Then went completely still.

“Marcus…”

“Why did Jasmine send you thirty thousand dollars?””

Her face lost color.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

Those words made my chest tighten.

“Find out what?””

Danielle looked behind her.

Then back at me.

And whispered:

“Because Malik isn’t the only person Jasmine has been hiding things from.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked terrified.

Then she opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

I stepped in.

And immediately noticed something strange.

On her table was a folder.

With my name written across the front.

I picked it up.

“Where did you get this?””

Danielle looked away.

“Jasmine gave it to me.””

My heart started racing.

“What’s inside?””

She didn’t answer.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a document.

A document that made my hands go numb.

Because at the bottom was my signature.

May you like

Except I had never signed it.

And the date on the paper was from six months earlier.
