Chapter 8: The Video Emily Left Behind
I waited until Ethan was asleep before watching the video.
I couldn’t explain why.
Maybe because some part of me was afraid.
Afraid of hearing Emily’s voice.
Afraid of discovering another secret.
Afraid that the woman I loved had left me with a truth I couldn’t handle.
I sat in the dark living room.
The screen lit up.
And there she was.
Emily.
Older than the last memory I had of her.
Tired.
But smiling.
My breath disappeared.
“Daniel,” she said softly.
“If you’re watching this, then I’m probably not there to explain everything myself.””
I covered my mouth.
Her voice.
After all these years.
It broke something inside me.
“I know you’re going to be hurt.””
She looked down.
“I know you might feel like I lied to you.””
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“But I need you to know something.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“I never stopped choosing you.””
I froze.
“Lucas is part of my past. But you and Ethan are my heart.””
The room became silent.
“Before I met you, I made mistakes. I was young. I was scared. And when I lost the baby, I thought that part of my life was gone forever.””
She paused.
“But life has a strange way of bringing people back together.””
Then she said:
“When I found out Lucas was alive, I was afraid.””
I leaned closer.
“Not because I didn’t love Ethan.””
“Because I was afraid Ethan would feel replaced.””
My eyes closed.
That was exactly what Rachel had created.
A fear that Emily never had.
“I wanted my son to have a brother.””
She smiled.
“I wanted Ethan to know he was loved by more people, not less.””
The video paused for a second.
Then Emily said:
“Daniel, please don’t punish yourself.””
I shook my head.
Because that was impossible.
I had failed my son.
I had failed her.
“I know you,” she continued.
“You will blame yourself.””
She smiled sadly.
“But you have always been a good father.””
The screen blurred through my tears.
“Protect Ethan.””
Then she added:
“And protect Lucas.””
The video ended.
I sat there for a long time.
Then my phone rang.
Rachel.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Why did you keep the video?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That Emily would win.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Her voice broke.
“She was still better than me.””
I said nothing.
“She was dead, and everyone still loved her.””
“That was never a competition.””
“It felt like one.””
I closed my eyes.
“Rachel, you hurt children because you were jealous of someone who wasn’t even alive.””
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I know what I did.””
“Then why?””
A long pause.
“Because once I started, I didn’t know how to stop.””
That was the saddest thing she had ever said.
Not because it excused her.
Because it showed she had watched herself become someone terrible.
“What do you want from me?””
“I want to apologize.””
I looked toward Ethan’s room.
“I don’t know if he can forgive you.””
“I know.””
“And I don’t know if I can.””
“I know.””
The call ended.
Weeks passed.
Life slowly changed.
Ethan and Lucas began spending time together.
At first, they were awkward.
They were two boys who had been taught to see each other as enemies.
Then one afternoon, I found them playing basketball outside.
Lucas missed a shot.
Ethan laughed.
“You’re terrible.””
Lucas smiled.
“You’re worse.””
And for the first time, they sounded like brothers.
I stood at the window watching them.
Thinking about everything we almost lost.
Then a letter arrived.
Not from Rachel.
From Emily’s old attorney.
Inside was a document.
A final piece of information Emily had left behind.
I read the first line.
And my entire body went cold.
Because it wasn’t about Lucas.
It wasn’t about Rachel.
It was about me.
The document revealed something Emily had hidden until her final days.
Something that explained why she trusted me with both boys.
And why she believed I was the only person who could save them.
