Chapter 3: The Door She Locked
The garage still smelled like gasoline and old paint.
I stood there holding the small blanket Ethan had used.
I couldn’t understand how I had missed it.
How many nights had my son slept here while I was upstairs believing everything was normal?
I touched the old camping chair in the corner.
That was where he had been sleeping.
A child.
Alone.
In a garage.
My hands shook.
When Ethan came home from school, I sat him down.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes immediately filled with fear.
“I thought you’d send Mom away.””
“I should have sent her away sooner.””
He looked down.
“I didn’t want Lucas to lose his mom.””
That was the moment I realized how much pain my son had been hiding.
He wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.
He was trying to keep everyone together.
That night, Rachel came back.
She didn’t apologize.
She walked inside like she still owned the place.
“I need to talk to Daniel.””
I stepped between her and the hallway.
“No.””
Her eyebrows lifted.
“You’re keeping me away from my own home?””
“This is about Ethan.””
She sighed.
“Again with Ethan.””
The disgust in her voice made my blood run cold.
Lucas was standing behind her.
He looked uncomfortable.
For the first time, I noticed something.
He wasn’t smiling.
He wasn’t enjoying any of this.
“Lucas,” I said softly, “did you know Ethan slept in the garage?””
The boy froze.
Rachel immediately answered.
“Don’t involve him.””
But Lucas looked at the floor.
That told me everything.
“Lucas?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“I didn’t want her to do it.””
Rachel turned sharply.
“Excuse me?””
Lucas stepped back.
“I told you it was too much.””
The room went silent.
Rachel stared at her own son.
“You’re taking his side?””
Lucas shook his head.
“I’m saying it was wrong.””
For a moment, Rachel looked less like an angry mother.
She looked exposed.
But then her expression changed.
She pointed at me.
“This is what you wanted.””
“What?””
“You wanted to destroy my family.””
I laughed sadly.
“No, Rachel. You did that yourself.””
She grabbed her purse.
“I’m taking Lucas.””
Lucas looked shocked.
“Mom…”
“Now.””
But he didn’t move.
That was the first time I saw him choose.
Not against his mother.
Against what she had done.
A week later, lawyers became involved.
Rachel claimed I was trying to alienate her children.
She told everyone I was a bitter father who couldn’t accept discipline.
Then she did something I never expected.
She brought Lucas’s school records into the argument.
She claimed Ethan had influenced Lucas against her.
I sat in the courtroom hearing those words.
My son held my hand.
The judge looked through the documents.
Then she looked at Ethan’s school counselor.
“Can you explain your concerns?””
The counselor opened her file.
“Yes.””
She looked at Rachel.
“And I believe there are more incidents than Mr. Carter knows.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“What does that mean?””
The counselor reached into the folder.
She pulled out a photograph.
My heart stopped.
It was a picture Ethan had drawn.
A picture of our family.
But someone had crossed out Ethan’s face.
Written underneath were four words.
You don’t belong here.
The judge stared at the paper.
“Who wrote this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lucas slowly raised his hand.
“I know.””
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked terrified.
But he spoke.
“It wasn’t Ethan.””
May you like
The courtroom went silent.
“It was my mom.””
