Chapter 5: The Name on the Letter

I stared at the name at the bottom of Rachel’s letter until the ink blurred.

*Emily Carter.*

My first wife.

Ethan’s mother.

The woman I lost five years earlier.

For a long time, I had convinced myself that grief was the hardest thing I would ever survive.

I was wrong.

Because grief was losing someone you loved.

Betrayal was discovering someone had been hiding the truth about them.

I sat alone at the kitchen table, the same place where Ethan had once been forced to eat separately from everyone else, and read Rachel’s letter again.

Every sentence felt heavier the second time.

Daniel, I know you hate me. Maybe you should.

But before you decide I was only cruel because I was jealous of a child, you need to know what Emily did.

My hands tightened.

No.

Not Emily.

Not the woman who had loved Ethan more than anything.

I kept reading.

Emily left something behind. Something she never told you about. Something I found after I married you.

I stopped.

My heart started racing.

Something?

What could Emily possibly have hidden from me?

For our entire marriage, I thought we had no secrets.

We were young when we met.

Twenty-six years old.

We built a life from nothing.

When Ethan was born, Emily cried so hard in the hospital that the nurses joked she was trying to compete with the baby.

“He has your eyes,” she told me.

I laughed.

“No, he has yours.””

She shook her head.

“He has both. That’s what makes him ours.””

Then cancer took her.

Slowly.

Cruelly.

Leaving me to raise a child who asked every night when Mommy was coming home.

I folded the letter.

I wanted to throw it away.

I wanted to believe Rachel was doing what she always did.

Twisting the truth.

But one thing bothered me.

She had written Emily’s name.

And she knew things about my first wife that I didn’t.

The next morning, I drove to the storage unit where I kept Emily’s belongings.

Old photographs.

Her journals.

Ethan’s baby clothes.

Things I couldn’t look at after she died.

The lock clicked open.

Dust floated through the sunlight.

I found Emily’s old wooden box in the back.

Inside were dozens of memories.

A bracelet from our first anniversary.

A hospital wristband from Ethan’s birth.

And a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

My breath caught.

I had never seen it before.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

Daniel,

If you’re reading this, something happened that stopped me from telling you myself.

I sat down on the cold floor.

The next line made my entire body freeze.

Ethan has a half-brother.

I read it again.

Then again.

No.

That wasn’t possible.

Emily only had one child.

My son.

I kept reading.

Before I met you, I was in a relationship with someone named Michael. I found out I was pregnant, but I lost the baby before I ever told him.

I exhaled.

A lost pregnancy.

Painful.

But not a secret that explained Rachel’s hatred.

Then I saw the next sentence.

Years later, I discovered Michael had a son.

My eyes moved down the page.

Lucas.

I dropped the letter.

The room became silent.

Rachel’s son.

Lucas.

Ethan’s stepbrother.

Not by marriage.

By blood.

I felt sick.

All those years.

All that anger.

Rachel hadn’t hated Ethan because he wasn’t hers.

She hated him because she knew something I didn’t.

She knew the boys were connected.

But why would that make her hurt him?

I grabbed my phone and called the only person who might know.

Michael.

Emily’s old friend.

The man I hadn’t spoken to since her funeral.

He answered after three rings.

“Daniel?””

His voice sounded surprised.

“Why are you calling me?””

I swallowed.

“I need to ask you about Emily.””

A long silence.

Then:

“What did you find?””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You knew?””

Another silence.

“Daniel…”

“You knew about Lucas?””

The silence that followed was the answer.

I stood up.

“You knew my son and Lucas were brothers?””

Michael sighed.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because Emily didn’t want you to know.””

“Why?””

His voice became quiet.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Then Michael said something I would never forget.

“She was afraid you would leave Ethan.””

I almost dropped the phone.

“What?””

“Daniel, listen to me. Emily made a mistake before she met you. She got pregnant young, and she lost that baby. She carried that guilt for years.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does when you understand what happened.””

I sat back down.

“Explain.””

Michael took a deep breath.

“Lucas wasn’t supposed to be part of your life. Emily thought that chapter was closed. But when she found out Michael had a son, she started looking for him.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted Ethan to know he had family.””

I closed my eyes.

My son.

His entire life.

He had a brother living under the same roof.

And none of us knew.

But one question remained.

“Why did Rachel know?””

Michael hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Michael?””

Finally, he answered.

“Because Rachel found Emily’s letter before you did.””

My heart stopped.

“She found it?””

“Yes.””

“And she knew the truth?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the empty room.

Everything suddenly looked different.

Rachel hadn’t just been cruel.

She had been hiding a secret.

A secret connecting our children.

But I still didn’t understand one thing.

If Lucas and Ethan were brothers…

Why did Rachel spend years trying to make them hate each other?

Then Michael whispered the answer.

“Daniel, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“Rachel didn’t just find the letter.””

May you like

A pause.

“She changed it.””
