Chapter 7: The Brother I Buried

I didn’t sleep that night.

How could I?

My entire understanding of my family had collapsed.

Lucas.

Ethan.

Emily.

Rachel.

My brother.

A man I hadn’t spoken to in eleven years.

Andrew Carter.

The person I once trusted more than anyone.

Until the night he betrayed me.

At least, that was what I believed.

I found his old number in my phone.

I stared at it for almost an hour.

Then I called.

He answered after one ring.

“Daniel?””

His voice sounded older.

Tired.

Like he had been waiting.

“You knew.””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My jaw tightened.

“You knew about Lucas?””

“Yes.””

“You knew Ethan had a brother?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“How long?””

“Since before Ethan was born.””

The words hurt.

I walked to the window.

“You knew and said nothing?””

“I tried.””

“No, you didn’t.””

“I did.””

His voice shook.

“Your anger wouldn’t let me.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My anger?””

“Daniel, you don’t remember what happened the night you found out Emily had been talking to me.””

I froze.

“What?””

A silence.

Then:

“You thought the worst.””

My heart started pounding.

Because suddenly I remembered.

Years ago.

Before Ethan was born.

I came home early one night.

I saw Emily and Andrew talking.

They stopped when I entered.

I was angry.

Jealous.

Confused.

Andrew had always been like a brother to me.

But in my mind, I created a story.

One I never questioned.

I accused them.

Emily cried.

Andrew left.

And I never spoke to him again.

“Andrew…”

“She wasn’t cheating.””

I swallowed.

“What were they talking about?””

“She was pregnant.””

I felt the room tilt.

“With Ethan?””

“No.””

My breath stopped.

“With Lucas?””

“Yes.””

I sat down.

Andrew continued.

“Emily had found out she was pregnant years earlier. She thought she lost the baby. But she was wrong.””

I whispered:

“Lucas.””

“Yes.””

My mind raced.

“Then why was Emily with me?””

“Because she loved you.””

The simplicity of his answer hurt.

“She was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would think she betrayed you.””

I looked at my hands.

All those years.

I had hated my brother.

I had doubted my wife.

And now I realized I had been wrong.

“Why did Rachel know?””

Andrew sighed.

“Because she found my old letters.””

“Letters?””

“Emily wrote to me before she died.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted me to be there for Lucas.””

I closed my eyes.

“So Rachel knew.””

“Yes.””

“And she used it against Ethan.””

Andrew’s voice became cold.

“Yes.””

There was a long silence.

Then I asked:

“Why didn’t you come forward?””

“Because Rachel threatened me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she threaten?””

“She said if I exposed the truth, she would tell everyone I abandoned Lucas.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was fighting cancer. I thought I had months left. I couldn’t take care of him.””

I froze.

“You had cancer?””

“Yes.””

The same disease that took Emily.

The same disease that had destroyed our family.

“I survived,” he continued.

“But by then, years had passed.””

I looked at the family photos on the wall.

Everything I believed was built on silence.

The next day, I met Andrew.

Ethan came with me.

I was nervous.

But when Andrew saw him, he cried.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like someone seeing a missing piece of their life.

“Ethan,” he whispered.

My son looked at me.

“Dad?””

I nodded.

“This is your uncle.””

Andrew smiled sadly.

“And maybe something more.””

Ethan looked confused.

Then Andrew said:

“Your mom loved you more than anything.””

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“Did she?””

“Yes.””

Andrew looked at Lucas, who had come with us.

“She loved both of you.””

For the first time, the boys stood beside each other without fear.

No jealousy.

No competition.

Just two children learning the truth.

But as we were leaving, Andrew stopped me.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

“There’s one final thing.””

“What?””

He looked at Lucas.

Then at Ethan.

“Emily didn’t just leave letters.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

Andrew reached into his coat.

He handed me a small envelope.

“She left a video.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t you show me this before?””

“Because Rachel had it.””

My hands tightened around the envelope.

“What does the video say?””

May you like

Andrew looked at me sadly.

“It explains why she was afraid you would never forgive her.””
