Chapter 9: The Man Who Entered Her Life for Money

Vanessa couldn't speak.

Alexander.

The man who had bought her flowers.

The man who had promised her a future.

The man who had introduced her to luxury hotels, private dinners, and expensive gifts.

Had he approached her because of her father's fortune?

She looked at the photograph again.

Alexander stood beside Thomas in front of the warehouse.

He was younger, but there was no mistaking his face.

Marcus took the photograph from Richard.

“Where did you find this?””

“In the original warehouse ledger archive.””

“Is the ledger still intact?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes. But it's not complete.””

“What do you mean?””

“Several pages were removed before Robert gave me the book.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Who removed them?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know. Your father believed the missing pages contained the names of everyone involved in the financial scheme.””

Marcus examined the photograph.

“Why didn't you bring this evidence forward earlier?””

Richard looked down.

“Because Robert asked me to wait until Vanessa was ready.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Ready? My father died five years ago. I've spent those five years believing the people around me loved me.””

Richard's expression softened.

“He wanted to protect you.””

“By keeping me ignorant?””

“He believed telling you everything would make you a target.””

Vanessa turned away.

For years, she had blamed herself for not recognizing the warning signs.

Now she wondered how many of those signs had been deliberately hidden.

Marcus returned the photograph.

“We need the original ledger.””

Richard nodded.

“I have it in a secure storage facility.””

“Can we retrieve it today?””

“Yes.””

Margaret approached them.

“The hearing will resume in fifteen minutes. Judge Hayes has agreed to consider the additional evidence.””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

“Do you want to continue?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

“Your father would be proud of you.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I hope so.””

They returned to the courtroom.

Thomas was speaking quietly with his attorney.

When he noticed Richard, his expression changed immediately.

“You.””

Richard stopped.

“Good morning, Thomas.””

Thomas stood.

“You have no business being here.””

“Actually, I believe I do.””

“You should have stayed out of this.””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“Your father would disagree.””

Thomas's attorney pulled him aside.

Judge Hayes entered.

“Everyone, please take your seats.””

The hearing resumed.

Margaret informed the court that new evidence had emerged linking the warehouse fire to the disputed trust transfers.

Thomas's attorney objected.

Judge Hayes allowed the evidence to be introduced provisionally, pending authentication.

Richard took the witness stand.

Margaret approached him.

“Mr. Thompson, how long did you represent Robert Bennett?””

“Twenty-two years.””

“Did he ever express concerns about his brother?””

“Yes.””

“What concerns?””

“He believed Thomas was diverting company funds through shell companies.””

Thomas shifted in his seat.

Margaret continued.

“Did Mr. Bennett identify anyone else?””

Richard glanced at Vanessa.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“Alexander Cole.””

The courtroom became silent.

Margaret held up the photograph.

“Is this the document you brought today?””

“Yes.””

“Can you identify the people shown?””

“Robert Bennett, Thomas Bennett, and Alexander Cole.””

Thomas's attorney stood.

“Objection. The identity of the third individual has not been established.””

Richard nodded.

“Then I would suggest examining the original photograph and its metadata.””

Judge Hayes looked toward the court clerk.

“Please mark it as an exhibit.””

Margaret continued.

“Did Robert Bennett explain why Alexander Cole was present?””

“Yes. He believed Alexander had helped arrange the financial transfers.””

Vanessa looked down.

Richard spoke again.

“Robert also told me that Alexander had approached Vanessa under a false identity.””

Her head snapped up.

“What?””

Margaret turned.

“Please explain.””

Richard took a breath.

“Alexander introduced himself to Robert's family as an independent investment consultant. But Robert later discovered that Alexander had been working with Thomas for years.””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Was he already planning to date me?””

Richard looked at her.

“Your father believed he was.””

She closed her eyes.

Thomas suddenly stood.

“This is absurd!””

Judge Hayes struck the desk with her gavel.

“Mr. Bennett, sit down.””

Thomas remained standing.

“These are fabricated accusations. Robert was paranoid near the end of his life. He didn't trust anyone!””

Richard looked directly at him.

“Because he had discovered what you were doing.””

Thomas's face turned red.

“You have no proof!””

Richard calmly opened his briefcase.

“Actually, I do.””

He removed a small digital storage device.

“Robert gave me a copy of the original accounting ledger. He also gave me a recorded statement.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“A recording?””

Richard nodded.

“He wanted Vanessa to hear it if the people responsible ever tried to take control of the trust.””

Vanessa stood.

“Can we play it?””

Judge Hayes looked at Margaret.

“Is the recording relevant?””

“Yes, Your Honor. It may contain direct evidence concerning the disputed transactions.””

The judge considered it.

“Proceed, subject to authentication.””

Richard connected the device to the courtroom system.

A moment later, the speakers crackled.

Then Robert Bennett's voice filled the room.

“Richard, if you're playing this recording, then something has gone terribly wrong.””

Vanessa's eyes filled immediately.

She hadn't heard her father's voice in years.

It sounded exactly as she remembered.

Warm.

Steady.

A little tired.

“Thomas believes the company belongs to him. He thinks that because he helped me build it, he deserves to control it.””

A pause.

“But the money isn't what worries me anymore.””

There was a rustling sound.

Then Robert continued.

“Alexander Cole is involved. I don't know how much Vanessa knows, but I suspect he has been trying to get close to her for a long time.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“Thomas told me Alexander was a talented young businessman. I believed him. Then I found the transfers.””

Another pause.

“I confronted Thomas. He denied everything. Two days later, the warehouse burned.””

The courtroom was completely silent.

Robert's voice became quieter.

“I don't know whether Thomas ordered it. I don't know whether Alexander helped him. But I know someone wanted those records destroyed.””

Vanessa looked toward her uncle.

He was staring at the floor.

Robert continued.

“There's something else, Richard. Something I haven't told anyone.””

The recording crackled.

“Alexander isn't the person directing this operation.””

Marcus leaned forward.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Her father spoke again.

“He's working for someone much more dangerous.””

Then the recording ended.

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

Judge Hayes called for order.

Margaret looked at Richard.

“Is there another recording?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why wasn't it played?””

“Because Robert specifically instructed me to preserve the second recording until the first had been heard in court.””

Margaret looked at Vanessa.

“Do you want to hear it?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard connected the device again.

The second recording began.

Robert's voice sounded weaker.

“Vanessa, if you're hearing this, I need you to understand something. I didn't leave the company to Marcus because I wanted him to own it.””

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

Her father continued.

“I left him a responsibility. He agreed to protect the company, but he refused to take ownership. That's why I trusted him.””

A pause.

Then Robert said something that made Marcus's face change.

“Marcus, if you're there, I need you to remember the promise you made me.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Robert continued.

“Never let the person who betrayed me take control of the company.””

The recording stopped.

Judge Hayes looked at Richard.

“Who was he referring to?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I believe he was referring to the person who arranged the warehouse fire.””

Thomas's attorney immediately stood.

“Your Honor, this recording is speculative and should not be considered reliable evidence.””

Judge Hayes looked at him.

“That determination will be made after authentication.””

Vanessa turned toward Richard.

“Who was my father talking about?””

Richard hesitated.

Then he looked at Marcus.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Tell her.””

Richard took a breath.

“Robert believed the person behind the entire operation was his own wife.””

Vanessa went completely still.

“My mother?””

Richard nodded.

“Your mother had access to the original company accounts. She also controlled several private investment vehicles.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. My mother had nothing to do with the business.””

“That's what Robert believed at first.””

“Then why would he suspect her?””

Richard looked toward the photograph.

“Because he discovered that several of the missing funds were transferred to an account bearing her maiden name.””

Vanessa felt as though someone had struck her.

Her mother.

The woman who had cried beside her at the funeral.

The woman who had told her that her father had died peacefully.

The woman who had encouraged her to trust Alexander.

Could she really have been involved?

Thomas suddenly laughed.

It was a small, bitter sound.

“Now you understand.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“What?””

Thomas leaned back.

“Your mother was never the innocent woman you believed she was.””

“Stop.””

“She knew everything.””

“Stop!””

Thomas looked at Marcus.

“Ask him what happened the night Robert died.””

Marcus stood.

“Thomas, be careful.””

Thomas smiled coldly.

“Oh, now you're worried about protecting her?””

He turned toward Vanessa.

“Your father didn't die because of some mysterious illness.””

Vanessa's hands began to tremble.

“What are you saying?””

Thomas leaned forward.

“Your father was about to expose the entire operation. The night he collapsed, your mother was the last person alone with him.””

Vanessa stared at her uncle.

“Are you saying she killed him?””

Thomas shrugged.

“I'm saying you should ask her.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

Thomas continued.

“Your father trusted the wrong woman. And now you're doing exactly the same thing.””

Vanessa turned toward Marcus.

“Did you know about this?””

Marcus didn't answer.

“Marcus!””

He finally looked at her.

“I knew your father had concerns about the financial records. I did not know whether your mother was involved.””

“But you knew she was being investigated?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because there was no verified evidence connecting her to your father's death.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“You let me believe everything was normal.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“I wanted to protect you from an accusation that could destroy your family without proof.””

She stepped backward.

“I don't know who to trust anymore.””

Before Marcus could answer, her phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*MOM: Vanessa, sweetheart, please don't listen to Thomas. Your father left something in my house. You need to come immediately.*

A second message arrived.

*MOM: It's the original ledger. And there's something you must know about the night your father died.*

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*MOM: Don't tell Marcus. He's the reason your father never came home.*

Vanessa slowly raised her eyes.

Marcus was watching her.

She slipped the phone into her handbag.

“I'm leaving.””

Marcus stepped toward her.

“Vanessa, wait.””

She shook her head.

“No. I need to hear the truth from my mother.””

And as she walked out of the courtroom, she didn't see Thomas exchange a satisfied glance with his attorney.

Because the final message on Vanessa's phone had not come from her mother.

It had come from an unknown number.

Someone had cloned her mother's contact.

And whoever sent it knew exactly how to turn Vanessa against the one man her father had trusted.
