Chapter 7: The Uncle Who Wanted Everything

Vanessa read the court filing three times.

Each time, the words became harder to believe.

Her uncle wasn't simply challenging her inheritance.

He was asking a judge to declare her incapable of managing her own affairs and appoint him as the temporary guardian of her entire estate.

Four hundred million dollars.

Her father's properties.

His investments.

The company he had spent decades building.

Everything.

And Thomas wanted control of all of it.

“That's insane,” Vanessa whispered.

Marcus stood beside his desk, reading the filing.

“It's a legal strategy.””

“It's a lie!””

“I know.””

“How can he do this? I'm perfectly capable of managing my own life.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Your uncle's petition claims that you've been involved in questionable financial transactions, that you've signed documents you didn't understand, and that you've allowed other people to control your business.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“He's using what happened with Alexander against me.””

“Exactly.””

She began pacing.

“So he creates a financial scandal, puts my name on everything, and then tells a judge I'm incompetent because of the scandal he helped create?””

Marcus nodded.

“That's what the evidence suggests.””

Vanessa stopped.

“Then we need to stop him.””

“We will.””

“Today.””

Marcus picked up his phone.

“Olivia, connect me with Margaret Ellis and the emergency litigation team. I want the original trust documents reviewed immediately.””

Olivia nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

Marcus continued.

“And contact the bank. They must preserve every transaction record and prevent any additional transfers.””

Vanessa watched him issue instructions.

He didn't shout.

He didn't panic.

He simply made decisions.

It was a kind of authority she had never encountered before.

Alexander had always talked about power.

Marcus exercised it without needing anyone to notice.

A few minutes later, Margaret Ellis entered the office carrying a thick legal binder.

“Mr. Reed, I've reviewed the petition.””

Marcus gestured toward the chair.

“What are our options?””

Margaret opened the binder.

“Thomas Bennett is relying on a clause in the original trust agreement that allows a temporary administrator to be appointed if the beneficiary is deemed incapable of protecting the estate.””

Vanessa looked horrified.

“Who decides that?””

“The court.””

“And my uncle is asking to be appointed?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He's the person stealing from me!””

Margaret remained composed.

“Then we need to establish that with evidence. An accusation alone won't be sufficient.””

Marcus pointed toward the documents.

“What about the digital authorization?””

“We have grounds to challenge it. If we can establish that Robert Bennett's credentials were used after his death without lawful authorization, the court may question the legitimacy of the transfers.””

Vanessa sat forward.

“Can my uncle still take control?””

“Not permanently without further proceedings. But the temporary order could create serious complications.””

Marcus looked at Margaret.

“How quickly can we respond?””

“Within hours, if we have the necessary evidence.””

Vanessa suddenly remembered the envelope.

She placed it on the desk.

“My father left something for me.””

Margaret examined the handwriting.

“Have you opened it?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Your father instructed me to give it to you personally.””

She broke the seal.

Inside were three documents.

The first was a handwritten letter.

The second was a copy of a corporate ownership agreement.

The third was a photograph.

Vanessa picked up the photograph first.

It showed her father standing beside Marcus outside an old industrial building.

Both men were smiling.

Her father had one hand resting on Marcus's shoulder.

On the back, someone had written:

The beginning of a promise. October 2018.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You knew my father before I did?””

Marcus gave a faint smile.

“Not quite. But we knew each other well.””

She opened the letter.

My dearest Vanessa,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that I spent years hoping you would never experience.

Her eyes filled with tears.

I know you believe that money creates security. I used to believe the same thing. I spent much of my life building businesses, acquiring properties, and collecting assets because I thought they would protect the people I loved.

But money can attract people who pretend to love you. It can turn family members into enemies and friends into strangers.

She continued reading.

There is something I need you to understand about Marcus Reed.

Vanessa looked up.

Marcus quietly stepped back, allowing her to continue.

Years ago, when my business was struggling, Marcus helped me. He had very little at the time, but he gave me something far more valuable than money. He gave me his honesty.

I offered him a controlling interest in Bennett Industrial Holdings as repayment. He refused.

Vanessa looked surprised.

She glanced at the ownership agreement.

It showed Marcus had been offered a substantial stake in her father's company.

But the signature line was blank.

Her father had continued.

Marcus told me that he didn't want to own something he hadn't built. He said that if I wanted to honor him, I should leave the company to my daughter and allow her to choose her own future.

Vanessa stopped reading.

“Why would he refuse four hundred million dollars?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because it wasn't mine.””

She looked down again.

I made Marcus promise to protect you if the day ever came when someone tried to take what belonged to you.

But I made him promise something else.

Her voice became unsteady.

He must never give you anything simply because you are my daughter. You must earn his respect through your own decisions.

Vanessa lowered the letter.

She had never heard anyone speak about money that way.

Her father had trusted Marcus more than people who shared his blood.

And Marcus had refused a fortune because he believed it wasn't his.

Margaret examined the ownership agreement.

“This is significant.””

Marcus nodded.

“It establishes the original offer and the reason it was rejected.””

“More importantly,” Margaret said, “it may help us challenge Thomas's claim that Marcus has been pursuing the estate for personal gain.””

Vanessa looked at the final page.

There was another handwritten paragraph.

One final warning, sweetheart. Thomas is not acting alone. If he makes his move, ask him about the warehouse fire in 2019.

Vanessa frowned.

“The warehouse fire?””

Marcus's expression changed.

Margaret noticed.

“Mr. Reed?””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Your father never told you about it?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus walked toward the window.

“In 2019, one of Bennett Industrial's warehouses caught fire. The building was insured, but the incident destroyed several years of financial records.””

“Was anyone hurt?””

“No. But your father suspected the fire wasn't accidental.””

Margaret opened her notebook.

“Was there an investigation?””

“Yes. The local authorities couldn't establish a cause.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Why would my father mention that now?””

“Because some of the missing records may have contained information about the trust.””

Before anyone could respond, Olivia rushed into the office.

“Mr. Reed, we have a problem.””

Marcus turned.

“What happened?””

“The court has scheduled an emergency hearing for tomorrow morning.””

Margaret stood.

“That's faster than expected.””

Olivia continued.

“Thomas Bennett has submitted an affidavit from a medical specialist claiming Vanessa has experienced severe emotional instability and impaired judgment.””

Vanessa's face turned white.

“What specialist?””

Olivia checked the document.

“Dr. Samuel Whitmore.””

Vanessa slowly shook her head.

“I know that name.””

Marcus looked at her.

“How?””

“He treated my father during his final months.””

Margaret frowned.

“Did he ever examine you?””

“No.””

“Then why would he make a statement about your mental capacity?””

Vanessa picked up the affidavit.

The signature was clear.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

She stared at the date.

The affidavit claimed he had personally examined her six weeks earlier.

But six weeks earlier, Vanessa had been in London.

She had never met him.

“It's forged,” she whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“Then we prove it.””

Vanessa's phone rang.

Her uncle's name appeared.

She answered before Marcus could stop her.

“Thomas!””

His voice was gentle.

“Vanessa, sweetheart. I heard you've been spending time with Marcus.””

“Why are you trying to take my company?””

“I'm trying to protect you.””

“You filed a petition declaring me incompetent!””

“Because you've been making terrible decisions.””

“Like trusting Alexander?””

Thomas sighed.

“Exactly.””

“You knew about the money.””

Silence.

Then he said, “There are things you don't understand.””

“Then explain them.””

“I will. But not over the phone.””

“Tell me about the warehouse fire.””

The silence that followed was different.

Longer.

Heavier.

Finally, Thomas spoke.

“Who told you about that?””

“My father.””

Thomas let out a slow breath.

“Your father should have left the past alone.””

Vanessa felt her heart pounding.

“What happened?””

“Meet me tomorrow morning. Alone.””

“Why alone?””

“Because Marcus has spent years manipulating you without you realizing it.””

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

“I'm not meeting you alone.””

Thomas's voice hardened.

“Then perhaps you'll never learn what really happened to your father.””

The call ended.

Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.

Marcus approached her.

“What did he say?””

She looked at him.

“He wants to meet tomorrow. He says he knows something about my father's death.””

Margaret closed her binder.

“Do not agree to anything without legal counsel.””

Marcus nodded.

“And don't meet him alone.””

Vanessa looked at the letter.

The warehouse fire.

The forged medical affidavit.

The missing fourteen million dollars.

Her uncle had just revealed that the financial scandal was connected to something much older.

Something that had happened before Alexander ever entered her life.

Then Olivia returned with another document.

“Mr. Reed, the investigators found something in the archived warehouse insurance file.””

Marcus took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

“What is it?””

Olivia answered quietly.

“The warehouse fire was investigated as suspected arson. And the insurance claim was approved by a company owned by Thomas Bennett.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then he turned the page.

The final line contained the name of the person who had signed the insurance authorization.

*ROBERT BENNETT.*

Vanessa felt sick.

Her father had signed the document himself.

But why?

And what had he been trying to hide?
