Chapter 5: A Dead Man's Signature
Vanessa couldn't stop staring at the document.
Her father's name was printed at the bottom.
*ROBERT BENNETT — AUTHORIZED TRUSTEE.*
She remembered the funeral.
She remembered the rain against the church windows.
She remembered holding her mother's hand while the family lawyer explained that the estate would remain untouched until the inheritance process was complete.
Her father had been a cautious businessman.
He never signed anything without reading it twice.
And he certainly hadn't approved a fourteen-million-dollar transfer from beyond the grave.
“Someone forged his credentials,” she whispered.
Marcus nodded.
“That is one possibility.””
Alexander shifted in his chair.
“Mr. Reed, we should not jump to conclusions. This could be a banking error.””
Richard looked at him.
“A fourteen-million-dollar banking error?””
“I'm saying we need more information.””
Vanessa turned toward Alexander.
“Do you know something about this?””
“No.””
“Look at me.””
He didn't.
She stood up.
“Alexander, look at me!””
He finally raised his eyes.
“I told you I don't know anything about your father's trust.””
Marcus watched them silently.
Olivia approached the table.
“Mr. Reed, legal counsel is on the line.””
Marcus nodded.
“Put them through.””
A speakerphone was activated.
A woman's voice filled the room.
“This is Margaret Ellis, external legal counsel. I've reviewed the preliminary documents. We need to establish whether the trust was legally authorized to transfer the funds.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“It's my father's trust. I can tell you he didn't approve anything.””
“Miss Bennett, are you currently the sole beneficiary?””
“Yes.””
“Were you ever appointed as a trustee?””
“No. My father's attorney handled everything.””
“Who was the attorney?””
Vanessa answered immediately.
“Richard Thompson.””
Marcus looked toward Olivia.
“Find his contact information.””
Margaret continued.
“We also need to verify whether the original digital certificate is still active.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“It shouldn't be. The bank was notified when my father passed away.””
The lawyer paused.
“Then this may be more serious than a simple authorization dispute.””
Alexander cleared his throat.
“Could we discuss this without making assumptions about criminal activity?””
Margaret's voice became colder.
“Mr. Cole, the presence of a fourteen-million-dollar transfer does not require anyone to make assumptions. It requires an investigation.””
Marcus ended the call after confirming the next steps.
He turned toward Vanessa.
“Did you ever give Alexander access to your father's financial documents?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I gave him copies of some estate papers.””
“Why?””
“He said he wanted to help me organize my inheritance.””
Marcus glanced at Alexander.
“Did you?””
Alexander nodded.
“She was overwhelmed after her father's death. I helped her with some administrative work.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You told me you were helping me protect my inheritance.””
“I was.””
“Then why is fourteen million dollars missing?””
“I didn't move it.””
Peter suddenly spoke.
“Mr. Reed, I think we should examine the original Northbridge agreements.””
Marcus turned.
“Why?””
Peter opened his briefcase again.
“Because I remember a clause about the Bennett trust. It was included in the original funding proposal.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“What clause?””
Peter removed a document.
He placed it on the table.
The first page carried the logo of Meridian Crown Holdings.
At the bottom was a paragraph titled:
*CONTINGENT BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP.*
Richard read it aloud.
“'In the event of a qualifying capital contribution from the Bennett Family Trust, beneficial control of the corresponding investment units shall transfer to the designated nominee.''”
Vanessa frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Peter swallowed.
“It means the person who arranged the investment may have gained control over the money once it entered the company.””
“Who was the designated nominee?””
Peter looked at Alexander.
Alexander's expression changed.
“Don't.””
Marcus turned to him.
“Don't what?””
“Don't let him invent another story.””
Peter pointed at the final page.
The designated nominee was listed clearly.
*CLAIRE MORGAN.*
Vanessa felt a cold sensation spread through her chest.
Claire.
Her childhood friend.
The woman who had stood beside her at her father's funeral.
The woman who had helped choose the flowers.
The woman who had told her that Alexander was the best man she could ever find.
Vanessa sank back into her chair.
“Why would Claire have control over my father's trust?””
Nobody answered.
Then she remembered something.
Three months earlier, Claire had visited her apartment with a bottle of champagne.
She had brought several documents and told Vanessa they were ordinary company registration forms.
Vanessa had been distracted.
Alexander had encouraged her to sign quickly.
She had trusted both of them.
“Can I see the signature page?”” Vanessa asked.
Peter passed it to her.
She examined the document.
Her name appeared on the bottom.
The signature looked almost perfect.
Almost.
But she noticed the final letter.
When she signed her name, she always made a small upward stroke at the end.
This signature didn't have it.
“That's not my signature.””
Alexander looked at the page.
“Are you sure?””
She raised her head.
“I know my own signature.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Olivia, preserve this document. We may need a forensic handwriting examination.””
Olivia collected the papers.
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
“You think I was involved?””
“I think we need evidence before reaching conclusions.””
“But my name is on everything.””
“Being named in a document doesn't automatically establish who authorized it.””
She lowered her eyes.
For years, she had believed that being close to powerful people meant she was protected.
Now she was discovering that her own name might have been used as a shield for someone else's crimes.
Alexander stood.
“Mr. Reed, I need to speak with you privately.””
Marcus didn't move.
“About what?””
“An issue concerning the company's acquisition strategy.””
Richard frowned.
“This meeting is about the financial investigation.””
Alexander ignored him.
“It's important.””
Marcus studied him for a moment.
“Fine. But Olivia will remain in the room.””
Alexander nodded reluctantly.
When the others stepped outside, Marcus remained seated.
“Talk.””
Alexander lowered his voice.
“There's more to the Meridian Crown arrangement than Peter knows.””
Marcus said nothing.
“Claire and I were trying to secure a major acquisition. The company needed capital, and the Bennett trust was a convenient source.””
“Convenient?””
Alexander hesitated.
“Vanessa's father had old connections in the banking sector.””
“Continue.””
“We believed the trust could support the transaction.””
“Did Vanessa authorize it?””
Alexander looked away.
“Not directly.””
Marcus leaned back.
“Did you forge her signature?””
“No.””
“Did Claire?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“That's a remarkable answer from someone who claims to know nothing.””
Alexander stepped closer.
“Mr. Reed, listen. There is a reason we needed that money.””
“What reason?””
“Sterling Global was in danger.””
Marcus remained motionless.
Alexander continued.
“Three years ago, one of our biggest overseas investments collapsed. We concealed the losses to protect the company's valuation. The acquisition was supposed to recover the money before anyone noticed.””
Marcus slowly stood.
“You concealed losses?””
Alexander swallowed.
“I was trying to protect the company.””
“You protected your position.””
“That's not fair.””
Marcus walked toward the window.
Outside, the city moved beneath the glass.
Cars crossed the intersection. Pedestrians hurried along the sidewalks. The world continued as if nothing had happened.
Marcus turned around.
“Who else knows?””
Alexander hesitated.
“Claire. Peter. A few people in finance.””
“And Vanessa?””
“She didn't know about the losses.””
Marcus studied him.
“Then why use her father's trust?””
Alexander's voice dropped.
“Because Claire said she could arrange access.””
Marcus returned to his desk.
“Your authority is suspended. You will remain available to legal counsel, and you will not contact anyone involved in this investigation.””
Alexander nodded stiffly.
Then he made one final attempt.
“Mr. Reed, you need to understand something. If this information becomes public, Sterling Global's share price could collapse.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Are you threatening the company?””
“I'm warning you.””
Marcus pressed the intercom.
“Olivia, please arrange for Mr. Cole to be escorted from the executive floor.””
Alexander's face darkened.
“You'll regret this.””
Marcus didn't respond.
Two security officers appeared.
Alexander walked toward the door, but before leaving, he turned to Vanessa.
“Don't believe everything Marcus tells you.””
Vanessa looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“Then tell me one thing.””
He stopped.
“Did you ever love me?””
Alexander looked at her.
For a moment, his expression softened.
Then his phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
And walked out without answering.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus waited until the door closed.
Then he spoke quietly.
“You should take some time before making any decisions about your personal life.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“I don't need advice about my personal life.””
“I wasn't giving you advice.””
“Then what are you doing?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Trying to make sure you understand what happens next.””
He opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.
It carried the name of a law firm Vanessa recognized.
Her father's old legal firm.
Marcus placed it on the desk.
“This was delivered to my office six months ago. It was addressed to me personally.””
Vanessa frowned.
“Why would my father write to you?””
Marcus turned the envelope over.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Robert Bennett.
“He asked me to keep it until a specific condition was met.””
“What condition?””
Marcus looked directly at her.
“The moment someone attempted to access the Bennett Family Trust without your authorization.””
Vanessa's breath caught.
“Did my father know this would happen?””
Marcus slid the envelope toward her.
“I believe he suspected it.””
Her fingers trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The first line made her knees feel weak.
Marcus, if Vanessa is reading this letter, then the people I feared have finally made their move.
She looked up.
Marcus was watching her carefully.
Then she read the next sentence.
There is something about her inheritance that I never told her. Something I promised her mother I would keep secret until she was ready.
Vanessa slowly lowered the paper.
“What secret?””
Marcus glanced toward the conference room door.
“Your father believed the person responsible for this scheme might not be Alexander.””
May you like
He paused.
“He believed the real architect was someone inside your own family.””
