Chapter 11: The Last Signature

Three days later, the financial investigation reached its conclusion.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Thomas Bennett had received unauthorized payments from Meridian Crown Holdings. Alexander Cole had concealed company losses and helped arrange fraudulent transfers. Claire Morgan had orchestrated the scheme, manipulated the trust's digital credentials, and attempted to obtain the original ownership certificates.

The court rejected Thomas's request for guardianship.

The disputed transactions were frozen.

And the board of Bennett Industrial Holdings officially recognized Vanessa as the rightful controlling shareholder.

But Vanessa had one final decision to make.

She stood in the boardroom of Sterling Global, looking at the empty chair at the head of the table.

Marcus sat several seats away.

Olivia placed a folder in front of Vanessa.

“These are the final appointment documents.””

Vanessa opened them.

The first page confirmed the restoration of her controlling rights.

The second contained the resignation of Marcus Reed as temporary chairman of Bennett Industrial Holdings.

The third was a proposed resolution appointing Vanessa as the company's permanent chairwoman.

She looked at Marcus.

“You could have kept the position.””

“I could have.””

“You could have argued that you deserved it.””

“I didn't build the company.””

“My father trusted you with it.””

“He trusted me to protect it until you were ready.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

“Then I have a question.””

Marcus nodded.

“What?””

“Will you help me run it?””

He smiled.

“If you want me to.””

She looked down at the documents.

For the first time, she understood that leadership wasn't about sitting at the most expensive table or having people stand when you entered a room.

It was about making decisions that affected people who might never know your name.

She picked up the pen.

And signed.

Olivia smiled.

“Congratulations, Madam Chairman.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Thank you.””

Then she turned toward Marcus.

“Mr. Reed, I believe we have a lot of work to do.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“I believe we do.””

The boardroom doors opened.

Peter Lawson entered carrying a document.

“There's one more development.””

Vanessa looked up.

“What happened?””

“The authorities have recovered the original warehouse ledger.””

“Where?””

“From a storage unit rented under Claire Morgan's name.””

Marcus stood.

“Did they find the missing pages?””

Peter nodded.

“All of them.””

He placed the ledger on the table.

Vanessa opened it.

The pages contained years of financial records, account transfers, and handwritten instructions.

At the bottom of one page was a note.

If the company survives, make sure Vanessa never has to depend on anyone who thinks money makes them superior.

She recognized her father's handwriting.

Her eyes filled.

Then Peter pointed to another entry.

“There's something else.””

The entry was dated two weeks before Robert's death.

It showed a transfer of three million dollars.

The recipient was an account belonging to a charity.

Vanessa frowned.

“Why would my father send money there?””

Marcus examined the details.

“It's the foundation he established for employees' children.””

Peter nodded.

“He funded scholarships for workers who couldn't afford university tuition.””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“He never told me.””

Marcus closed the ledger.

“Your father did a lot of things quietly.””

She looked at the board members.

“I want that foundation restored. And I want every employee who lost money because of this fraud to be compensated.””

Peter nodded.

“We can arrange that.””

Vanessa signed another document.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“And I want the scholarship program expanded.””

Marcus smiled.

“Your father would approve.””

For the first time since the scandal began, Vanessa felt something close to peace.

But she still had one final conversation waiting.

Alexander.

He had requested a meeting through his attorney.

Vanessa agreed to see him at the company's private meeting room.

When he entered, he looked nothing like the confident CEO she had once admired.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His watch was gone.

His hair was uncombed.

He sat across from her.

“Vanessa.””

She didn't offer a greeting.

“What do you want?””

Alexander rubbed his hands together.

“I wanted to explain.””

“Explain what?””

“Everything.””

She leaned back.

“Then start with why you dated me.””

He looked down.

“I cared about you.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I did.””

“Did you know who my father was?””

Alexander hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Before you met me?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa felt something inside her finally settle.

“So it was planned.””

Alexander shook his head.

“Not at first.””

“But you knew.””

“Yes.””

She looked out the window.

“Did you ever love me?””

Alexander leaned forward.

“Vanessa, there were moments when everything between us was real.””

“Which moments?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

She looked back at him.

“You know what hurts the most? It isn't the money. It isn't the lies. It's that you made me believe I had finally found someone who loved me for who I was.””

Alexander lowered his head.

“I made mistakes.””

“You made choices.””

He looked up.

“I can help you recover the money.””

“That's not your decision anymore.””

“Please. We had something.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No, Alexander. We had a performance. You played the role of a successful man, and I played the role of someone impressed by him.””

He looked wounded.

She continued.

“I don't hate you. I just don't recognize the person I thought I loved.””

Alexander stood.

“Is that all?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

He walked toward the door.

Then he stopped.

“Marcus is a better man than I'll ever be.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.””

May you like

Alexander left.

And this time, she didn't watch him go.
