Chapter 8: What Happened the Night Evelyn Died

Marcus stood motionless.
"Explain.""
I shook my head.
"Richard is trying to manipulate you.""
"Explain why your company paid Evelyn's hospital bill.""
"Because I wanted to help.""
"With whose money?""
I didn't answer.
Marcus picked up the bank certificate.
"Your company didn't exist seven years ago.""
"It was a small investment account.""
Daniel interrupted.
"That's not what the records show.""
He opened his briefcase again.
"The company was registered under a different name. It received its initial funding from a transfer connected to Thomas's business account.""
Marcus looked at me.
"Did my brother give you money?""
I swallowed.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he wanted me to help with the investment arrangement.""
"What arrangement?""
I looked at the floor.
"Richard told me Thomas was planning to buy out his shares.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That doesn't explain the hospital bill.""
I took a breath.
"Thomas wanted Evelyn to sign a document before she died. He said it was a temporary authorization that would protect the family business.""
Marcus's face tightened.
"And she refused.""
"Yes.""
"What happened after that?""
I couldn't speak.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Tell us.""
I looked at him.
"Your mother was difficult.""
Ethan's jaw clenched.
"Don't.""
"She accused everyone of trying to steal from her.""
"She was dying!""
"She wasn't always rational.""
Ethan stepped forward.
Marcus caught his arm.
"Let her talk.""
I closed my eyes.
That night had followed me for seven years.
I had spent so much time convincing myself that I had done nothing wrong that the truth had become difficult to separate from the lies.
But now there was nowhere left to hide.
"Richard told me Evelyn had agreed to meet with us," I began.
"He said she would sign the authorization if I explained how the money would be protected.""
Marcus stared.
"You went to the hospital?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"With Richard?""
"No. I went alone.""
Ethan looked toward the laptop.
"Mom's recording.""
Daniel pressed play.
The audio began with the faint sound of a hospital monitor.
Then Evelyn's voice.
"Why are you here?""
My recorded voice answered.
"Because I think you've misunderstood the arrangement.""
Evelyn laughed weakly.
"I haven't misunderstood anything.""
"Richard says you agreed.""
"Richard lies.""
A pause.
Then Evelyn continued.
"Vanessa, look at me.""
The recording crackled.
"Do you know what happens when you sign that document?""
I answered.
"It protects the company.""
"No. It gives Thomas control over Marcus's voting shares.""
I said nothing.
Evelyn continued.
"And once Thomas has control, he can remove Marcus from the company he built.""
My recorded voice became sharper.
"That's not true.""
"Then show me the original agreement.""
A long silence followed.
Evelyn spoke again.
"You don't have it, do you?""
The audio ended abruptly.
Marcus stared at me.
"That was your voice.""
I nodded.
Ethan's eyes were wet.
"Why did you go to her?""
I wiped my cheeks.
"Because Richard told me she would sign.""
"But she didn't.""
"No.""
"What happened next?""
I looked at Daniel.
He spoke quietly.
"The recording continues.""
He opened another file.
This time, the audio started with Evelyn speaking to someone else.
"Richard, you need to leave.""
A man's voice answered.
"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""
"I've made my decision.""
"Your decision doesn't matter anymore.""
There was a sound of movement.
Then Evelyn spoke again.
"If you do anything to Marcus, I will make sure he knows everything.""
Richard laughed.
"Marcus won't believe you.""
"Then Ethan will.""
The man's voice became colder.
"Don't involve the boy.""
Evelyn answered:
"He's my son. I will protect him.""
A door slammed.
Then there was silence.
Marcus stared at the screen.
"Did Richard threaten her?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I was trying to obtain enough evidence to prove it.""
Marcus turned toward me.
"What happened after you left?""
I looked down.
"I went home.""
"Did you see Richard?""
"Not that night.""
Ethan shook his head.
"You're lying.""
I looked at him.
He held up his phone.
"I found the hospital visitor log.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
Ethan opened a photograph.
It showed the hospital's visitor record.
My name appeared at 8:17 p.m.
Richard Hale's name appeared at 9:06 p.m.
Marcus stared.
"Richard came back?""
Ethan nodded.
"Twenty minutes before Mom's condition suddenly deteriorated.""
Daniel's face tightened.
"The hospital report records an additional visitor, but the name was incomplete.""
Marcus looked at the paper.
"Was it Richard?""
Daniel nodded.
"We need the original hospital records.""
Ethan looked at me.
"Did you know he went back?""
I didn't answer.
Marcus grabbed the dresser.
"Vanessa!""
I finally whispered.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
Ethan stared at me.
"Why?""
"Richard told me he needed to speak to her one last time.""
"Why would you let him?""
"He said he could convince her to sign.""
"She was dying!""
"I didn't know he would hurt her!""
Marcus stepped backward.
"Did he?""
I began crying.
"I don't know what happened in that room.""
Ethan's voice broke.
"You sent him there.""
I shook my head.
"He said he was going to talk.""
"Did you know he had been threatening her?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know she was afraid of him?""
"Yes.""
Ethan looked at his father.
"That's enough.""
Marcus didn't move.
His face had become frighteningly calm.
"Where is Richard now?""
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie.""
"I swear.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"There's something else we need to consider.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
"The safety deposit box.""
Daniel opened the red notebook.
"Evelyn's notes indicate that the box contains an original contract and a sealed letter. She believed those documents would expose the entire arrangement.""
Marcus picked up the silver key.
"Then we're going to the bank.""
Daniel nodded.
"I've already arranged for the bank's legal representative to meet us tomorrow morning.""
"Tomorrow?""
"They won't release the box tonight.""
Marcus looked at the clock.
"Then we'll be there when they open.""
I stepped forward.
"Marcus, please. Don't go.""
He looked at me.
"Why?""
"Because whatever Evelyn left behind, it won't change what happened between us.""
He stared.
"You're right. It won't.""
I reached for his hand.
He moved away.
"Don't touch me.""
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
"Dad, we should leave.""
Marcus nodded.
Daniel picked up his briefcase.
But before they could exit, my phone rang.
Richard.
Marcus held out his hand.
"Answer it.""
I shook my head.
"Please.""
"Put it on speaker.""
My fingers trembled as I accepted the call.
"Hello?""
Richard's voice was calm.
"Vanessa. Are you alone?""
I glanced at Marcus.
"No.""
A pause.
Then Richard sighed.
"That's unfortunate.""
Marcus moved closer to the phone.
"Richard, this is Marcus.""
"I know.""
"Where are you?""
"Not important.""
"What happened to Evelyn?""
Richard laughed softly.
"You're asking the wrong question.""
"Then give me the right one.""
Richard's voice dropped.
"Ask your son what he found in the safety deposit box.""
Ethan frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
Richard continued.
"Evelyn didn't leave you that box to protect your father, Ethan.""
Ethan's face changed.
"Then why?""
"Because she knew that one day you would discover who your father really was.""
Marcus stiffened.
"What does that mean?""
Richard ignored him.
"Vanessa, listen carefully. Bring me the red notebook and the silver key. In exchange, I'll give you the original hospital records.""
I looked at Marcus.
He shook his head.
Richard continued.
"Otherwise, the world will learn what happened during Evelyn's final hours.""
The call ended.
Marcus slowly turned toward Ethan.
"What does he mean about me?""
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't know.""
But he was already looking at the laptop.
At the video.
At the frozen image of his mother.
Then he whispered:
"There's another file.""
He opened the folder.
A document appeared.
Its title was:
*PATERNITY AND ESTATE CONFIRMATION — PRIVATE.*
Marcus stared.
"Why would your mother have a paternity document?""
Ethan opened it.
The first page contained his full name.
The second contained a laboratory reference number.
The third contained a result.
Marcus read it.
Then he sat down.
I watched his face change.

For seven years, I had believed this secret would destroy the family.
But I had never imagined the truth would be even worse.
