Chapter 5: The Man Who Helped Me Marry Marcus

The footsteps stopped outside the guest bedroom.
I quickly locked my phone and slipped it into my pocket.
Marcus entered first.
Behind him stood a tall man in a charcoal suit, carrying a leather briefcase.
I recognized him immediately.
Daniel Reeves.
Marcus's attorney.
The same man who had handled the paperwork when Marcus and I married.
The same man who had helped prepare our prenuptial agreement.
And the same man who had introduced me to Marcus eighteen months earlier.
"Good evening, Vanessa," Daniel said.
I forced a smile.
"Daniel. What a surprise.""
He glanced at the open cabinet.
Then at the scattered documents.
"Not quite the evening I expected.""
Marcus closed the bedroom door.
"Daniel, I want everything documented.""
"Of course.""
Daniel placed his briefcase on the dresser.
"What happened?""
Marcus handed him the letter.
"Read this.""
Daniel examined the handwriting.
His expression changed slightly.
"Is this Evelyn's?""
"Yes.""
Daniel read the first page.
Then the second.
When he reached the paragraph mentioning my name, he stopped.
He looked at me.
"Vanessa, have you ever met Evelyn?""
I shook my head.
"Not personally.""
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
"Not personally?""
"I might have seen her at an event.""
Marcus stared at me.
"Now you're changing your story?""
I sighed.
"I don't remember every person I've met in my life.""
Daniel placed the letter down.
"Marcus, we need to separate what we know from what we suspect.""
Marcus nodded.
"Fine. What do we know?""
"Your wife has been named in a historical warning. We have a recording that may contain evidence of financial misconduct. We also have questionable transfer documents and a staged incident that appears on your security footage.""
I folded my arms.
"You're all acting as though I'm already guilty.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Nobody has said that.""
"Your faces say it.""
He opened his briefcase.
"Then let's establish the facts.""
He removed a folder.
Inside were copies of several documents.
Marcus leaned forward.
"What's that?""
"Your original estate planning file.""
Marcus frowned.
"I thought we updated that last year.""
"We did. But I reviewed the older records this afternoon after Ethan contacted my office.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Ethan had contacted Daniel before tonight.
That meant he had been preparing.
Daniel continued.
"There's an unusual document in the original file. A financial authorization signed seven years ago.""
Marcus looked confused.
"What authorization?""
Daniel placed the paper on the dresser.
"It was submitted shortly before Evelyn's death.""
Marcus picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped.
"That's not my signature.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's what I thought.""
I stared at the paper.
The signature looked convincing.
Almost perfect.
But there was one detail I recognized.
The final letter in Marcus's surname curved upward.
A detail I had copied dozens of times.
Marcus turned toward me.
"Have you ever seen this document?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Daniel looked at the date.
"At the time, this authorization would have allowed another person to access certain business accounts and approve limited transfers.""
Marcus frowned.
"Who was authorized?""
Daniel pointed to the bottom.
My name appeared there.
Vanessa Cole.
I forced a laugh.
"This is absurd.""
Marcus's voice became quiet.
"Why was your name on a document from seven years ago?""
"I don't know.""
Daniel examined the signature.
"I'll need to have this authenticated.""
Marcus placed the paper down.
"Do it.""
Daniel nodded.
Then he turned toward me.
"Vanessa, I need to ask you something directly. Did you know Evelyn before she became ill?""
I hesitated.
That was enough.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Answer him.""
I looked between them.
"Yes.""
The word seemed to drain the air from the room.
Marcus's expression went blank.
"How long?""
"Not long.""
"How did you meet her?""
I sat on the edge of the bed.
"At a charity event.""
"Which event?""
"I don't remember.""
Daniel opened his notebook.
"Was it seven years ago?""
I nodded.
Marcus looked as though someone had struck him.
"You met my wife seven years before we met?""
"I didn't know she was your wife at first.""
"Then how did you know her?""
I looked down.
"She approached me.""
Marcus's voice sharpened.
"Why?""
"She wanted to talk about a business arrangement.""
"What business arrangement?""
I hesitated.
Then I made the mistake of looking at Daniel.
He was watching me carefully.
"I was working in property management at the time," I said.
"Evelyn asked me to help her locate a private investment opportunity.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"It happened.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I knew you would react exactly like this.""
Marcus laughed once.
It was a terrible sound.
"You knew my wife, hid it from me, and then married me.""
"I didn't marry you because of her!""
"Then why did you?""
I looked at him.
"Because I loved you.""
He turned away.
Daniel interrupted.
"There's another issue.""
Marcus looked at him.
"What?""
Daniel opened a second folder.
"According to the bank records, the authorization was never fully activated. However, someone attempted to reactivate it two months ago.""
Marcus frowned.
"Who?""
Daniel placed a photocopy on the dresser.
The request had been submitted through a legal representative.
I recognized the signature immediately.
It belonged to Daniel.
My heart stopped.
Marcus stared at his attorney.
"Did you submit this?""
Daniel's face changed.
"No.""
Marcus picked up the paper.
"That's your signature.""
"It's not.""
"Your name is printed here.""
"Anyone can print my name.""
I looked at Daniel.
For the first time that night, I saw genuine fear in his expression.
I took a small step backward.
This was becoming much bigger than I had planned.
Marcus turned to his attorney.
"Who submitted it?""
Daniel checked the reference number.
"I'll have to contact the bank.""
"Tonight.""
"Marcus, the bank's legal department may not be available.""
"Then contact their emergency fraud line.""
Daniel nodded.
He took out his phone and walked toward the hallway.
Marcus remained in the bedroom.
He looked at me.
"Did you know Daniel was involved?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Are you sure?""
"Yes.""
He studied my face.
Then he asked the question I had been hoping he would never ask.
"Who was the man in the photograph with you outside the bank?""
I swallowed.
"Someone I knew.""
"His name?""
"I don't remember.""
Marcus moved closer.
"Vanessa, I'm running out of patience.""
I looked toward the hallway.
Daniel was still on the phone.
I lowered my voice.
"His name is Richard.""
Marcus frowned.
"Richard who?""
"Richard Hale.""
The name meant nothing to him.
But it meant everything to me.
Richard had been the person who introduced me to the original financial arrangement.
He had helped me create the company.
He had explained how to move the money.
And he had promised that once Marcus signed the final estate documents, we would never have to worry about money again.
Marcus picked up his phone.
"I'm calling the police.""
I grabbed his arm.
"No!""
He looked down.
I released him immediately.
"Please," I whispered.
"Don't do something you'll regret.""
"Why are you afraid of the police?""
"I'm not.""
"Then move.""
I stood frozen.
Daniel returned.
"Marcus, I reached the bank's fraud department.""
"And?""
"They confirmed that the recent authorization request was submitted by a law firm using my credentials.""
Marcus frowned.
"Your credentials were stolen?""
"Apparently.""
Daniel paused.
"But there's something else.""
"What?""
"The bank says the original authorization was accompanied by a separate document. A document that identifies the person who created the entire arrangement.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Who?""
Daniel looked toward me.
"Richard Hale.""
My knees nearly buckled.
Marcus slowly turned.
"Who is Richard Hale?""
I couldn't answer.
Daniel closed his briefcase.
"He's the man who introduced Vanessa to the original financial authorization seven years ago.""
Marcus looked at me.
"You told me you barely knew Evelyn.""
I began shaking my head.
"Marcus...""
"How long have you known Richard?""
I whispered the answer.
"Seven years.""
Marcus's face hardened.
"And how long have you been planning this?""
I looked at the floor.
Daniel's phone rang.
He checked the screen.
Then his expression changed.
"Marcus, we have a problem.""
"What now?""
"The bank has just received a request to release Evelyn's safety deposit box.""
Marcus looked toward the silver key.
"But Ethan already accessed it.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not the box itself.""
He held up his phone.
"The request is for an emergency release of its contents to a private representative.""
Marcus stared.
"Who?""
Daniel turned the screen around.
May you like
The name appeared in black letters.
*RICHARD HALE.*
