Chapter 7: The Attorney Who Was Never on Our Side

Nobody moved.

Daniel stood beside the bedroom door, his leather briefcase hanging from one hand.

On Marcus's laptop, Evelyn's frozen face remained visible.

Beside her stood a younger Daniel Reeves.

The same man who had just spent the evening pretending to help expose me.

Marcus slowly rose from the chair.

"Tell me that's not you.""

Daniel glanced at the screen.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"It is.""

Ethan stepped between them.

"How long have you been lying to my father?""

Daniel placed his briefcase on the floor.

"Seven years.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Seven years?""

"I can explain.""

"You've been my attorney for seven years!""

"Yes.""

"You handled my wife's estate. You handled my business contracts. You handled my marriage to Vanessa!""

Daniel nodded.

"And I regret that the situation has reached this point.""

Marcus let out a bitter laugh.

"Reached this point? You were standing beside my dying wife, and you never told me?""

Daniel looked toward the laptop.

"Evelyn asked me not to.""

"Why?""

"Because she believed someone inside your household was working with Richard.""

Marcus turned toward me.

I immediately shook my head.

"Don't look at me. I didn't know Daniel was involved.""

Daniel gave a quiet laugh.

"That's interesting.""

I glared at him.

"What?""

"You knew Richard. You knew Evelyn. You knew about the authorization.

You knew about the three-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer. But somehow, you never knew I was involved?""

I stepped backward.

Marcus raised his hand.

"Both of you stop.""

He looked at Daniel.

"Play the video.""

Daniel hesitated.

"Marcus, I think we should discuss the circumstances first.""

"Play it.""

Ethan clicked the mouse.

The recording continued.

Evelyn lay against the hospital pillows, a thin blanket covering her legs.

Daniel stood beside the bed, holding a folder.

Evelyn looked exhausted.

"Marcus doesn't know," she whispered.

"And I want to keep it that way until I have proof.""

The younger Daniel nodded.

"Richard has already contacted the bank. He's trying to move the funds before the estate documents are finalized.""

"Then stop him.""

"I can't do that without exposing the entire arrangement.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Then we expose it.""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"There's something else you should know.""

"What?""

"Vanessa isn't the only person Richard recruited.""

Evelyn turned toward him.

"Who else?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Someone Marcus trusts completely.""

The recording crackled.

Evelyn stared at him.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

"Then I want that person named in the report.""

Daniel hesitated.

"That would destroy your family.""

Evelyn looked directly at the camera.

"My family is already being destroyed.""

The recording stopped.

Marcus stared at the frozen screen.

"Who was the other person?""

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus grabbed him by the lapels.

"Who?""

Ethan moved closer.

"Dad!""

Daniel didn't resist.

Then he quietly said:

"Richard Hale.""

Marcus released him.

"That's not what she meant. Richard was already involved.""

Daniel shook his head.

"She meant someone else.""

Marcus stared.

"Who?""

Daniel reached into his briefcase and removed a folded document.

He placed it on the dresser.

"Your brother.""

Marcus went completely still.

"Thomas?""

Daniel nodded.

"Thomas was involved in the original arrangement.""

I looked up sharply.

That wasn't supposed to happen.

Richard had told me Thomas was merely a witness.

Marcus stepped away from Daniel.

"My brother died four years ago.""

"Yes.""

"Then how could he still be involved?""

"Because he was the person who introduced Richard to Evelyn.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Thomas was my business partner. He was at my wedding. He helped me raise Ethan after Evelyn died.""

Daniel looked down.

"And he helped Richard create the financial structure that eventually targeted your family.""

Ethan sat down on the edge of the bed.

"Why would Uncle Thomas do that?""

Daniel opened the document.

"Because he believed he was entitled to half of your father's company.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Thomas owned shares.""

"Not enough to control the company. He wanted more.""

"Why didn't he come to me?""

"Because he knew you would refuse.""

Marcus looked toward the laptop.

"Did Evelyn know?""

"She discovered the arrangement shortly before her death.""

"And you helped her?""

"I tried.""

"Did you succeed?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Partially.""

Marcus stared at him.

"That's not an answer.""

Daniel took a breath.

"Evelyn managed to move the original ownership documents into a safety deposit box. She also left instructions that the contents could only be released under specific circumstances.""

Ethan looked at the silver key.

"That's why she kept it.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

Marcus looked at the red notebook.

"Then why did you help Vanessa and Richard?""

Daniel's face changed.

"I didn't.""

I laughed.

"That's convenient.""

Daniel turned toward me.

"You were supposed to complete the transfer tonight.""

I froze.

Marcus looked at him.

"What?""

Daniel continued.

"Richard believed Marcus would sign the authorization after the incident with Ethan. He expected Vanessa to claim she was frightened and needed financial protection.""

Marcus looked at the cash.

"Three hundred thousand dollars.""

"That was the amount Richard planned to use as evidence of Ethan's attempted theft.""

Ethan shook his head.

"So the money was never mine.""

"No," Daniel replied.

"It was planted.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Was that the plan?""

I didn't answer.

He nodded slowly.

"Of course it was.""

I started crying.

"Marcus, I was following instructions. Richard told me what to do.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You weren't following instructions. You were making choices.""

I turned on him.

"Don't pretend you're innocent!""

He didn't respond.

I pointed at the laptop.

"You stood beside Evelyn. You knew what Richard was doing. And you let him continue!""

Marcus turned toward Daniel.

"Is that true?""

Daniel looked down.

"Yes.""

Marcus stepped back as if Daniel had struck him.

"Why?""

Daniel finally opened the second compartment of his briefcase.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

"Because Evelyn made me promise something.""

He placed it on the dresser.

Marcus opened it.

The first page contained a handwritten statement.

The second contained a bank certificate.

The third contained a photograph of Thomas, Richard, and Daniel standing outside a building.

Marcus studied it.

"What is this?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"Evidence that Thomas and Richard created the fraudulent authorization. I kept a copy because Evelyn asked me to preserve it.""

"Then why didn't you give it to me?""

"Because Richard threatened to destroy your company if I did.""

Marcus laughed without humor.

"So you protected my company by letting my wife be framed?""

Daniel's face tightened.

"I made the wrong decision.""

Ethan stood.

"You didn't make one wrong decision. You made hundreds.""

Daniel accepted the accusation without argument.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He removed a small USB drive.

"There's another recording.""

Marcus looked at it.

"What recording?""

"The last conversation between Evelyn and Richard.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Daniel placed the USB beside the laptop.

"She recorded it secretly. It contains the reason Richard wanted the safety deposit box so badly.""

Marcus looked toward me.

"Vanessa, what is inside that box?""

I swallowed.

"I don't know.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Yes, you do.""

I looked at him.

He pressed the USB into Marcus's hand.

"Listen carefully. The contents of that box could change who legally owns this entire company.""

Marcus inserted the drive.

A new audio file appeared.

Before he could press play, Daniel's phone rang.

He checked the number.

His face went pale.

"Who is it?"" Marcus asked.

Daniel answered without speaking.

A man's voice came through the speaker.

"Daniel, I assume you've found the notebook.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Richard.

The voice continued.

"Tell Marcus to stop digging. He has no idea what his wife was protecting.""

Marcus grabbed the phone.

"Richard Hale?""

A pause.

Then a laugh.

"Marcus. It's been a long time.""

"Where are you?""

"Somewhere you can't reach me.""

Marcus clenched his jaw.

"What do you want?""

Richard's voice became colder.

"I want what Evelyn stole from me.""

Marcus looked at the silver key.

"You're too late.""

Richard laughed again.

"Am I?""

Then he said something that made Marcus's expression collapse.

"Ask Vanessa why Evelyn's final hospital bill was paid by a company she owned.""

The call disconnected.

Marcus slowly turned toward me.

I couldn't look at him.

Because Richard had just exposed the one thing I had never told anyone.

Evelyn's final hospital bill hadn't been paid by Marcus.

May you like

It had been paid by me.

And I hadn't done it out of kindness.
