Chapter 2: The Recording Didn't Lie

For three seconds, the entire dining room went silent.

Marcus looked at my hand wrapped around his wrist.

Then he looked at my face.

"Why?"" he asked.

I swallowed.

"What?""

"Why shouldn't I play it?""

My fingers loosened.

"I just told you. I don't want to watch something so horrible again.""

Ethan gave a short laugh.

"Horrible for you?""

Marcus pulled his wrist away.

"Enough, Ethan.""

"No, Dad. Not this time.""

Marcus looked down at his phone.

"Let's see what happened.""

He pressed play.

The video had no sound at first.

But the camera angle was perfect.

It showed the entire dining room, including the table and the entrance to the hallway.

I watched myself place the envelope beside the money.

Then I watched myself arrange the bundles into neat stacks.

Marcus leaned closer to the screen.

"Is that you?""

I forced a small smile.

"Of course it's me. I was cleaning up.""

"At nine forty?""

"I couldn't sleep.""

The video continued.

Onscreen, I looked toward the ceiling camera.

Then I stepped away from the table.

Ethan entered.

He stopped when he saw the money.

Marcus's eyebrows pulled together.

"That's when he came in?""

I nodded quickly.

"Yes. That's when everything happened.""

But the video kept playing.

It showed Ethan standing several feet away from me.

It showed him pointing at the envelope.

It showed me stepping closer.

Then it showed me reach for his phone.

Ethan pulled away.

There was no grabbing.

No pushing.

No struggle.

Marcus slowly lowered his phone.

"Vanessa?""

I felt cold sweat gathering beneath my hair.

"The video doesn't have sound," I said.

Ethan shook his head.

"Keep watching.""

Marcus looked at the screen again.

On the recording, I suddenly grabbed my dress and tore it.

Then I knocked over the glass.

Then I struck my own cheek.

Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.

I reached for his arm.

"Marcus, listen—"

He stepped away.

"Don't.""

The video continued.

It showed me screaming.

It showed Ethan standing motionless.

It showed Marcus entering and punching his own son.

Then, just before the recording ended, the camera captured something I hadn't noticed.

My reflection in the dark glass cabinet behind Marcus.

While Marcus held me, I was smiling.

Not crying.

Not frightened.

Smiling.

Ethan pointed at the screen.

"There's your terrified wife.""

Marcus looked at me.

His face had gone pale.

"Tell me that's not what it looks like.""

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then I started crying.

This time, the tears were real enough to sting my eyes.

"Marcus, I can explain.""

"Explain what?""

"You're misunderstanding what happened.""

"Which part?""

I looked toward Ethan.

He was still holding his jaw.

"He's been threatening me for months," I said.

"He made me feel unsafe in this house.""

Ethan shook his head.

"That's a lie.""

"He's been trying to drive me away since the wedding.""

"Because you keep stealing from Dad!""

Marcus turned sharply.

"Stealing?""

Ethan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper and placed it on the table.

"Ask her about the withdrawals.""

I stared at the paper.

It was a bank statement.

Marcus picked it up.

"What is this?""

"Transfers from your private investment account.""

Marcus studied the page.

His expression shifted from anger to confusion.

"These are legitimate transfers.""

"Then why did you transfer money to an account in Vanessa's name?""

My mouth went dry.

Marcus looked up.

"What account?""

Ethan took another paper from his pocket.

"Three separate transfers over six weeks. Forty thousand, fifty-five thousand, and another seventy thousand dollars.""

Marcus read the figures.

"Vanessa?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know what he's talking about.""

Ethan leaned against the table.

"Then explain why your name is on the receiving account.""

Marcus turned to me.

"Did you move money from my investment account?""

"I was managing household expenses.""

"One hundred and sixty-five thousand dollars?""

"I was going to tell you.""

"When?""

I looked at him helplessly.

"Marcus, we've been married for eighteen months. I thought we were supposed to share everything.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

Ethan folded his arms.

"There's more.""

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

"Of course there is.""

"Three weeks ago, I found a document in Dad's home office.""

"What document?""

"A draft amendment to his will.""

Marcus looked up.

"That's private.""

"I know. But my name was on it.""

I felt a sudden surge of panic.

Ethan continued.

"It said that if Dad became incapacitated, Vanessa would have temporary control over the household accounts and several business assets.""

Marcus frowned.

"I never signed that.""

"Exactly.""

I stepped forward.

"That's ridiculous. I never touched your will.""

Ethan turned toward me.

"Then why was your signature on the draft?""

I laughed nervously.

"Anyone can copy a signature.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Did you have access to my office?""

"Of course. I'm your wife.""

"Did you take any documents?""

"No.""

Ethan pointed at the envelope.

"Then open that.""

Marcus looked down.

The envelope remained sealed.

His name was written on the back in smaller handwriting.

I had hoped the money and the staged attack would distract him long enough for him to forget it existed.

That plan had lasted less than ten minutes.

Marcus picked it up.

"What's inside?""

Ethan answered.

"I don't know. She brought it downstairs before I arrived.""

Marcus examined the seal.

"Vanessa?""

I shook my head.

"It's personal.""

"Personal to whom?""

"To me.""

He turned the envelope over.

"Then why is my name written on the back?""

I had no answer.

Marcus tore the seal.

Inside was a printed document, several bank records, and a small photograph.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His hands began to tremble.

"What is this?""

I moved closer.

"Marcus, give it to me.""

He pulled it away.

"No.""

His eyes moved across the page again.

"Is this a transfer authorization?""

I said nothing.

He looked at the bank records.

Then at the photograph.

It showed me standing outside a private banking office with a man in a gray coat.

Marcus stared at it.

"Who is this?""

I forced myself to breathe.

"Someone from the bank.""

"Why were you meeting him?""

"To discuss an account.""

"Whose account?""

I glanced at Ethan.

He was watching me carefully.

"Mine.""

Marcus looked at the document again.

The name at the bottom belonged to a company I had never mentioned to him.

A company registered six months earlier.

A company that had received money from one of his investment accounts.

"Vanessa," he said slowly.

"What have you done?""

I started crying again.

But Marcus didn't move toward me.

He didn't offer me his hand.

He simply stood there with the papers.

And for the first time since our wedding, I realized that he wasn't looking at me like his wife.

He was looking at me like a stranger.

Ethan quietly picked up his phone.

Marcus noticed.

"What are you doing?""

"Calling someone.""

"Who?""

"My attorney.""

Marcus nodded once.

"Good.""

I stepped between them.

"You're not bringing lawyers into this family!""

Ethan looked directly at me.

"You brought money, fake evidence, and a stolen signature into this family.""

I slapped the table.

"Watch your mouth!""

Marcus raised his hand.

"Enough!""

The command made both of us freeze.

He looked at Ethan.

"Go upstairs and put some ice on your jaw.""

Ethan hesitated.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

Then Marcus looked at me.

"And you stay right here.""

Ethan walked toward the staircase.

At the bottom step, he stopped.

"One more thing, Dad.""

Marcus turned.

"What?""

"The camera in this room isn't the only one.""

My blood turned to ice.

Ethan pointed toward the hallway.

"There's another camera outside your office.""

Marcus slowly looked at me.

I couldn't stop my hands from shaking.

Because that second camera had recorded something far worse.

May you like

Something I had spent weeks making sure nobody discovered.

And Ethan knew exactly where to find it.
