Chapter 8: The Fairy Queen's Last Rehearsal
I barely slept.
Jonathan's words echoed through my mind.
Your father didn't die because of an accident.
At 1:00 a.m., Olivia called.
"Camille, where are you?""
"At home.""
"Good. Listen carefully. I've spoken with the investigator handling your father's case. They want to interview Jonathan Pierce.""
"He's alive.""
"We know. But he's disappeared from the hotel.""
I sat upright.
"What?""
"Martin left with him shortly after you did.""
"Can they find him?""
"They're trying.""
I walked to the window.
Outside, the city was still awake.
Cars moved through the streets, their headlights cutting through the darkness.
"Olivia, I heard Jonathan say something.""
"What?""
"He said my father's death wasn't an accident.""
She went silent.
Then she spoke carefully.
"Camille, don't make assumptions. We have evidence of financial misconduct, but that doesn't establish what happened medically.""
"I know.""
"We'll investigate it properly.""
I closed my eyes.
"All right.""
"One more thing. The gala committee has approved a special security arrangement. Your stepmother and stepsister will be allowed into the event, but all legal documents will be held by the foundation's counsel.""
"Good.""
"And Camille?""
"Yes?""
"Do not approach Martin alone.""
I almost laughed.
"That won't be a problem.""
I ended the call.
Then I turned toward the wardrobe.
Tomorrow was the gala.
And I had a feeling the evening would be much bigger than a stolen dress.
At ten the next morning, the mansion was in chaos.
Vanessa had hired a team of stylists, makeup artists, and photographers to prepare Brielle for the evening.
The living room had become a temporary beauty studio.
Garment bags covered the furniture.
Boxes of jewelry were stacked beside the fireplace.
Brielle sat in front of a mirror while a makeup artist worked on her face.
"More shimmer," she instructed.
The artist added another layer.
"That's too much," Brielle complained.
Vanessa stood behind her.
"Darling, you look beautiful.""
Brielle tilted her head.
"Do you think Daniel will be there?""
"Of course.""
"Will he be impressed?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Everyone will be impressed.""
I walked through the room carrying my coffee.
Brielle spotted me in the mirror.
"Camille!""
I stopped.
"Yes?""
"Come here.""
I approached.
She held up a necklace.
"Which one should I wear with the butterfly gown?""
I examined the two options.
One was a delicate diamond necklace.
The other was a turquoise choker.
"The diamond one.""
Brielle smiled.
"I knew you'd say that.""
She turned to the stylist.
"Use the diamond necklace.""
Then she looked at me again.
"By the way, what are you wearing tonight?""
"A dress.""
She laughed.
"Obviously. What kind?""
"Something blue.""
Her smile faded.
"Don't tell me you're planning to wear blue to the gala.""
"Why not?""
"Because the entire theme is mine.""
I raised an eyebrow.
"Your theme?""
"Yes. The fairy kingdom. The butterflies.
The turquoise decorations. All of it.""
I looked around the room.
"That's a lot of responsibility.""
Brielle grinned.
"I can handle it.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Camille, I hope you remember what we discussed. You are not to interfere with Brielle's evening.""
I nodded.
"Of course.""
Brielle leaned back in her chair.
"Good. Because I have a surprise for you.""
I looked at her.
"What surprise?""
She smiled.
"You're going to see.""
At 2:00 p.m., I met Isabelle at the studio.
She had arranged the final fitting in a private room.
The new gown was waiting beneath a soft white cover.
When she removed it, I forgot to breathe.
The butterfly wings were even more beautiful than I remembered.
They extended almost six feet from the bodice, with delicate silver veins running through the translucent material.
Tiny lights shimmered beneath the surface.
When Isabelle pressed a hidden control, the wings opened slowly.
The effect was magical.
I stepped toward the mirror.
The gown hugged my waist before flowing into layers of pale blue and turquoise silk.
Silver butterflies were scattered across the skirt.
Some were embroidered.
Others were attached to delicate transparent threads, giving the illusion that they were floating around me.
I touched the bodice.
"It's perfect.""
Isabelle smiled.
"Of course it is.""
She adjusted the final strap.
"Now, tell me something. Are you going to reveal your identity before or after your stepsister walks onstage?""
"After.""
"Good.""
She stepped back.
"Then I have one more surprise.""
She opened a small box.
Inside was a silver butterfly pendant.
I recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to my mother.
I looked at Isabelle.
"Where did you get this?""
"Your father gave it to me years ago. He asked me to keep it until you were ready to wear it.""
I picked it up.
The pendant was delicate, with a tiny blue stone in the center.
My eyes filled with tears.
"He remembered.""
"Of course he did.""
Isabelle fastened it around my neck.
"Your father told me something once. He said you were like a butterfly.""
I smiled sadly.
"What did he mean?""
"He said people kept trying to hold you down because they were afraid of what would happen when you finally learned to fly.""
I looked at my reflection.
Then I whispered:
"Tonight, I fly.""
At 5:30 p.m., Daniel called.
"Camille, I have an update.""
"About Jonathan?""
"Yes. He's been located.""
"Where?""
"At a private residence outside the city. The investigators are speaking with him.""
I exhaled.
"Good.""
"But he's refusing to cooperate.""
"Why?""
"He says Martin has something on him.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"Apparently, Jonathan has been receiving payments for years. Martin threatened to expose the arrangement if he ever spoke about the forged documents.""
I walked toward the studio window.
"Can they protect him?""
"They're trying.""
"Did he say anything about my father?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Yes.""
My heart began beating faster.
"What?""
"He told the investigators that Martin and Vanessa met your father at the hospital the night before he died.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why?""
"He doesn't know. But he says Martin was carrying a folder containing several documents your father had refused to sign.""
I gripped the window frame.
"What documents?""
"Jonathan believes they were related to the trust.""
I took a breath.
"Thank you for telling me.""
"Camille?""
"Yes?""
"Be careful tonight.""
I smiled faintly.
"I will.""
He paused.
"Can I ask you something?""
"Of course.""
"Why are you still going through with the public reveal? You could handle everything privately.""
I looked at the butterfly gown.
"Because my father spent his life building something that was supposed to help people. Vanessa and Martin have spent years trying to turn it into their personal bank account.""
I swallowed.
"And because my stepsister has been telling everyone that she designed something she stole from me.""
Daniel laughed softly.
"That's fair.""
I smiled.
"See you tonight.""
At 7:00 p.m., the Midnight Masquerade was already underway.
The ballroom occupied the top three floors of the Grand Regent Hotel.
Crystal chandeliers hung above a sea of black and silver decorations. Hundreds of white candles lined the entrance, while enormous butterfly installations glowed against the walls.
Outside, photographers crowded the red carpet.
Limousines arrived one after another.
Celebrities, business leaders, philanthropists, and members of the press stepped into the building.
Inside the main ballroom, a massive stage stood beneath a curved screen.
At its center was a silver butterfly emblem.
The official symbol of Asteria.
I watched the live security feed from my private dressing suite.
At 7:20, Vanessa arrived.
She wore a black velvet gown with a diamond necklace.
Brielle followed.
She wore my stolen butterfly dress.
The wings had been altered badly.
The original support structure was missing, and the enormous translucent panels sagged slightly behind her shoulders.
But from a distance, the gown still looked impressive.
Brielle smiled for the cameras.
Vanessa stood beside her, looking like a proud mother.
A reporter approached.
"Miss Bennett! Is it true you're the featured performer tonight?""
Brielle smiled.
"Yes. I've been preparing for this moment for months.""
"Can you tell us who designed your gown?""
Brielle placed one hand over her chest.
"I designed the concept myself. It represents transformation, freedom, and the power of imagination.""
I almost laughed.
A second reporter asked:
"Will you be performing the opening sequence?""
"Absolutely.""
Vanessa leaned toward the microphone.
"My daughter has worked incredibly hard. We're very proud of her.""
I turned off the monitor.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Olivia.
We have a problem. Martin has arrived.
I looked toward the ballroom feed.
The camera showed Martin entering through a side door.
He wasn't alone.
A woman in a dark coat followed him.
I recognized her from my father's old business photographs.
Margaret Lewis.
The former head of Bennett Holdings' legal department.
She had left the company shortly after my father's death.
And according to the company records, she had signed several of the disputed transactions.
I immediately called Olivia.
"Did you know Margaret was coming?""
"No. Who told you?""
"She's with Martin.""
Olivia's voice tightened.
"Camille, stay in your dressing room. I'm sending security.""
I watched the screen.
Martin spoke to Margaret.
Then he handed her a small envelope.
She opened it.
Her face changed.
Then she looked toward the main stage.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What are they planning?""
Olivia answered.
"I don't know yet. But whatever it is, we need to stop it.""
I stood.
"No.""
"Camille—"
"They've been planning this for years. I'm not hiding now.""
I ended the call.
Then I looked at the gown.
Isabelle entered the room.
"Are you ready?""
I nodded.
She adjusted the wings.
"Remember, the opening sequence begins at 8:30. You have exactly twelve minutes before the identity announcement.""
I took a deep breath.
"Understood.""
A knock sounded.
A production assistant entered.
"Miss Bennett, there's a problem with the opening performance.""
"What kind of problem?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"Miss Brielle Bennett is refusing to follow the original choreography.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"She says she wants to change the entrance. She wants the entire ballroom to go dark, then have her appear alone beneath a spotlight.""
I exchanged a look with Isabelle.
"Did she ask the technical director?""
"Yes.""
"And?""
"He refused. She became angry and said she would call the sponsors.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
"Tell the technical director to keep the original sequence.""
The assistant nodded.
Then he hesitated.
"There's something else.""
"What?""
"Miss Bennett has requested that the Asteria emblem be removed from the opening screen.""
I stared at him.
"On whose authority?""
"She says the emblem belongs to her.""
For several seconds, I didn't speak.
Then I smiled.
"Leave it.""
The assistant looked confused.
"Miss?""
"Leave the emblem exactly where it is.""
He nodded and left.
Isabelle approached.
"She's going to be furious.""
I looked at my reflection.
"Let her.""
At 8:15, Eleanor entered my dressing room.
She wore a midnight-blue gown and carried a small silver folder.
"Camille.""
I turned.
"Everything ready?""
"Yes. The committee is assembled. Olivia is here. The legal documents are secured.""
"Martin?""
"Still in the ballroom.""
"And Vanessa?""
"With Brielle.""
Eleanor handed me the folder.
"There's something I thought you should see before you go onstage.""
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
My father stood beside Eleanor, holding a small child in his arms.
Me.
I was perhaps five years old.
My father was smiling.
On the back, he had written:
For Camille. One day, the world will see what I have always seen.
My eyes filled with tears.
Eleanor touched my shoulder.
"He wanted this evening to happen.""
I nodded.
"Then let's give him the evening he wanted.""
A bell rang.
The ballroom lights dimmed.
The opening ceremony was beginning.
I stepped toward the stage entrance.
Through the curtains, I could hear the audience applauding.
Brielle's voice came through the speakers.
"Good evening, everyone. Tonight, I am honored to present the fairy queen.""
The music began.
Then something unexpected happened.
The enormous screen behind the stage went black.
The butterfly emblem disappeared.
A new image appeared.
A photograph of my father.
Beneath it were the words:
*RICHARD BENNETT — FOUNDER OF THE BENNETT CHILDREN'S INITIATIVE.*
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
I looked toward Eleanor.
She frowned.
"That isn't our opening slide.""
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Olivia.
Camille, stop the ceremony. Martin has taken control of the presentation system.
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
He's about to announce that your father transferred the company before his death.
I looked through the curtain.
Brielle was standing in the center of the stage.
Vanessa was smiling in the front row.
Martin was approaching the podium.
And the microphone was already in his hand.
Then he spoke.
"Ladies and gentlemen, before we celebrate tonight's featured performer, there is an important matter concerning the Bennett family that deserves your attention.""
I stepped forward.
The wings on my back shimmered beneath the stage lights.
Eleanor grabbed my hand.
"Camille, wait.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
She pointed toward the screen.
A new document appeared.
It was a supposed final amendment to my father's trust.
And at the bottom was my name.
*CAMILLE BENNETT — DECLARED INCOMPETENT TO INHERIT.*
For one terrible second, I couldn't move.
Then I recognized the signature of the person who had supposedly witnessed it.
Not Jonathan Pierce.
Not Martin Caldwell.
It was Eleanor Whitmore.
I turned toward her.
She looked horrified.
"Camille," she whispered, "I have never seen that document before.""
But Martin was already speaking.
"And tonight, we are pleased to announce that the rightful ownership of Bennett Holdings will pass to Brielle Bennett.""
The audience applauded uncertainly.
Brielle raised her arms.
Vanessa stood.
And I realized they had saved their biggest lie for the largest audience possible.
I took one step toward the stage.
Then another.
May you like
I wasn't going to let them finish.
Not this time.
