Chapter 4: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave
I didn't sleep that night.
At 2:17 a.m., I was still sitting at my father's old desk, staring at the message Eleanor Whitmore had sent me.
Your father suspected Vanessa would eventually try to take everything from you.
The words kept repeating in my head.
My father had always been protective, but he wasn't a paranoid man. He trusted people until they gave him a reason not to. He had welcomed Vanessa into our home when I was seventeen, believing she would make our family whole again.
He had even paid for Brielle's education, her first apartment, and her extravagant lifestyle.
And now I was beginning to understand that the woman he had trusted might have been planning to take his daughter's inheritance all along.
At 8:30 a.m., I called Eleanor.
She answered on the second ring.
"Camille, I was expecting your call.""
"Tell me what my father left with you.""
There was a brief silence.
"Before I do, I need you to come to my office. There are documents I would rather show you in person.""
"Is this about Vanessa?""
"Partly. But there's something else you need to understand. Your father didn't just leave you an inheritance. He left you a responsibility.""
I frowned.
"What responsibility?""
"Come at ten. I'll explain everything.""
She ended the call.
At exactly 9:55, I arrived at the foundation's headquarters.
The building occupied an entire block in downtown Manhattan, its glass exterior reflecting the pale morning sunlight. Inside, marble floors led to a reception area decorated with photographs from previous Midnight Masquerade galas.
I had seen every photograph before.
I had approved most of them.
But today, I entered through the front doors as Camille Bennett rather than the anonymous creative director known as Asteria.
A receptionist looked up.
"Good morning. Can I help you?""
"I'm here to see Eleanor Whitmore.""
"Do you have an appointment?""
"Yes. Ten o'clock.""
"Your name?""
"Camille Bennett.""
The receptionist typed something into her computer.
Then her expression changed.
"Oh! Miss Bennett. Mrs. Whitmore asked us to bring you directly upstairs.""
I followed her to the private elevator.
On the thirty-second floor, Eleanor was waiting beside her office door.
She was in her late sixties, with silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and the kind of presence that made powerful men lower their voices when she entered a room.
She embraced me.
"Your father would be proud of you.""
I swallowed.
"I hope so.""
"Come. We have a great deal to discuss.""
Her office overlooked Central Park. A large mahogany desk stood beneath an enormous abstract painting, and several framed photographs covered the shelves.
One showed my father standing beside Eleanor at a charity auction.
I had never seen it before.
Eleanor noticed me looking.
"He was one of the first people who believed this foundation could become something extraordinary.""
She opened a cabinet and removed a sealed wooden box.
"Your father gave me this six months before he died.""
I stared at it.
"Why didn't he give it to me himself?""
"He intended to. But he became concerned about certain financial transactions involving your stepmother.""
My throat tightened.
"What transactions?""
Eleanor placed the box on the desk.
"Your father discovered that Vanessa had been moving money from one of the family accounts into a private company. He confronted her. Shortly afterward, he began preparing these documents.""
She opened the box.
Inside was a small USB drive, a thick envelope, and a handwritten letter.
My name was written across the front.
I recognized my father's handwriting immediately.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
My darling Camille,
If Eleanor is giving you this letter, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.
I made mistakes after your mother died. I wanted you to have a family again so badly that I ignored things I should have questioned.
Vanessa is charming when she wants something. But charm is not kindness, and generosity is not always love.
I have made arrangements to protect your future. The trust is legally yours, and no one can take control of it without your authorization.
There is one thing I need you to remember: never confuse being quiet with being powerless.
I stopped reading.
Tears blurred the final lines.
You were always the strongest person in this house, even when you didn't know it.
I love you.
Dad.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Eleanor waited quietly.
After a moment, I wiped my eyes.
"What's on the drive?""
"Your father's explanation. He recorded it shortly before his final hospitalization.""
My breath caught.
"Can we watch it?""
Eleanor nodded.
She connected the drive to her computer.
A video appeared.
My father sat in his study, wearing the blue sweater I had bought him for his birthday. He looked tired, but his eyes were clear.
"Camille," he began, "if you're watching this, I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.""
I covered my mouth.
He continued.
"I discovered that Vanessa had been preparing a transfer of the controlling shares in Bennett Holdings. She intended to place them in Brielle's name before your twenty-fifth birthday.""
Eleanor paused the video.
I stared at her.
"She tried to steal my inheritance while my father was alive?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't he divorce her?""
"He intended to. But he wanted to secure the evidence first.""
I looked back at the screen.
"Please continue.""
Eleanor restarted the recording.
My father leaned closer to the camera.
"There is another matter. Vanessa was not acting alone.""
The room seemed to grow colder.
"Someone inside the company helped her. Someone who had access to the financial records and knew exactly how to disguise the transfers.""
My father glanced down at a piece of paper.
"I believe it was someone I trusted for more than twenty years.""
Then the recording ended.
I stared at the blank screen.
"Who?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"Your father never confirmed the person's identity.""
"Didn't he leave any evidence?""
"He left the original transaction records with his attorney. But the attorney passed away two years ago, and the files were transferred to another firm.""
I stood.
"Then I want those records.""
Eleanor nodded.
"I've already arranged a meeting with the attorney handling the estate.""
I looked at the wooden box.
"Why didn't you tell me this sooner?""
"Because your father asked me to wait until you were ready. He believed that revealing everything before you had control of the trust would put you in danger of losing more than money.""
I took a slow breath.
Then I noticed another document inside the envelope.
It was a formal agreement between my father and the Midnight Masquerade Foundation.
I read the first paragraph.
Then I read it again.
My father had established a permanent charitable endowment in my name.
The Bennett Children's Initiative.
It was funded through a portion of his company shares.
The purpose was to support children who had lost parents and families struggling to afford medical treatment.
I looked up.
"How much?""
Eleanor's expression softened.
"Your father initially contributed twelve million dollars. The endowment has grown considerably since then.""
"How much is it worth now?""
"Approximately forty-seven million.""
I sat down slowly.
My father hadn't just protected my future.
He had built something that would outlive both of us.
"Why didn't Vanessa know about this?""
"She knew there was a charitable foundation. She didn't know the details. Your father kept the controlling documents separate.""
I looked at the photographs on Eleanor's shelf.
For the first time, I understood why she had been so determined to have me open the gala.
It wasn't simply about the gown.
It was about my father's legacy.
"I'll open the ceremony," I said.
Eleanor smiled.
"I was hoping you would.""
"One condition.""
"Name it.""
"I want the Bennett Children's Initiative announced before the opening performance. And I want the committee to know exactly who funded it.""
"Agreed.""
I stood and gathered the documents.
As I reached the door, Eleanor called my name.
"Camille?""
I turned.
"Your stepmother has been making calls.""
"To whom?""
"Several gala sponsors. She's telling people that you're unstable and that your appearance could embarrass the foundation.""
I smiled without humor.
"Then she's working very hard to embarrass herself.""
Eleanor studied me.
"Are you sure you want to continue with the public reveal?""
I looked down at my father's letter.
"More than ever.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Evelyn.
Miss Camille, I'm sorry to bother you. Your stepmother has brought someone to the house. They're in your father's study. They are removing documents.
I immediately called her.
"Evelyn, who is there?""
Her voice was trembling.
"I don't know his name. But Vanessa introduced him as the new financial adviser for Bennett Holdings.""
I froze.
"What does he look like?""
"Gray hair. Tall. He has a scar near his left eyebrow.""
I turned toward Eleanor.
She was already watching me.
I repeated the description.
Her face went pale.
Then she whispered a name.
"Martin Caldwell.""
"Who is he?""
Eleanor took a slow breath.
"Your father's former chief financial officer.""
The man who had access to every account.
The man my father had suspected.
And the man who had disappeared immediately after my father's death.
I grabbed my bag.
"Where is he now?""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Apparently, he's working for your stepmother.""
My phone vibrated again.
This time, Evelyn had sent a photograph.
It showed Martin standing beside Vanessa in my father's study.
But what caught my attention was the document in his hand.
A transfer authorization.
May you like
Dated for tomorrow.
And bearing my forged signature.
