Chapter 7: The Night They Invited the Wrong Woman to Dinner
At 6:45 p.m., the night before the Halloween gala, I received a photograph that changed everything.
It showed a man sitting inside a private dining room at the Harrington Hotel.
He was wearing a navy suit and holding a glass of whiskey.
Beside him sat Vanessa.
Across from them was Martin Caldwell.
But the man sitting at the end of the table was the one who made my blood run cold.
He was supposed to be dead.
His name was Jonathan Pierce, my father's former attorney.
The man who had supposedly died two years earlier after a sudden stroke.
And according to Daniel Harrington, someone was using his identity to authorize the transfer of my father's company.
I stared at the photograph.
"Daniel, where did you get this?""
"One of my father's security officers sent it to me.""
"Are you certain that's Jonathan Pierce?""
"I am. My father worked with him for nearly twenty years.""
I zoomed in.
The man looked older, thinner, but unmistakably familiar.
"What is he doing with Vanessa?""
"That's what I'm trying to find out.""
I walked toward my bedroom window.
"Did you speak to him?""
"No. My father is still at the hotel. He's refusing to sign anything until he understands why Vanessa has invited him.""
"Good.""
Daniel paused.
"Camille, there's something you need to know. Your stepmother has been telling people that Brielle will become the new owner of Bennett Holdings.""
I almost laughed.
"She's been telling people that for years.""
"This time, she has documentation.""
"Forged documentation.""
"Probably. But if they present it publicly, the damage could be considerable.""
I looked at the black folder on my desk.
Inside were my father's original trust documents, the suspicious transfer requests, and the recording from the night before his hospitalization.
"Daniel, I need you to do something.""
"Anything.""
"Keep your father away from that meeting. Don't let him sign anything.""
"I'll try.""
"And send me the full photograph.""
"Already sent.""
I ended the call.
A few seconds later, my laptop chimed.
The photograph arrived.
I enlarged the image and examined the documents scattered across the dining table.
One page had a familiar heading.
*BENNETT HOLDINGS — CHANGE OF CONTROLLING OWNERSHIP.*
At the bottom was a signature.
My father's.
I leaned closer.
It was almost perfect.
But my father had a habit of writing the letter R in his signature with a distinctive upward stroke.
This one didn't have it.
Someone had copied his signature from an old document.
I called Olivia.
She answered immediately.
"Camille?""
"I need you to look at something.""
I forwarded the photograph.
She examined it while I waited.
Then she spoke.
"Where did you get this?""
"From Daniel Harrington.""
"That's a forged signature.""
"I know.""
"Do you recognize the attorney?""
"Jonathan Pierce.""
Olivia went silent.
Then she said, "Camille, Jonathan Pierce's death certificate is suspicious.""
I straightened.
"What?""
"His death was registered through a private medical facility. The original certificate was never verified by the county clerk. I noticed the discrepancy when I reviewed your father's estate.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I hadn't confirmed it.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"So he's alive.""
"Apparently.""
"Can you investigate?""
"I'm already doing it.""
I took a slow breath.
"Olivia, I want you at the gala tomorrow night.""
"Why?""
"Because I want every document presented before the committee.""
She paused.
"You're planning to expose them publicly.""
"I'm planning to stop them.""
"Those aren't always the same thing.""
"I know.""
She sighed.
"All right. I'll be there.""
After the call, I opened the closet.
My new butterfly gown was waiting inside its protective cover.
I unzipped it halfway.
The wings caught the light.
For a moment, I imagined Brielle standing beneath the gala's enormous chandeliers, smiling for cameras in the damaged version of my design.
She would believe she had won.
Vanessa would believe her plan was finally complete.
Martin would believe nobody could trace the money.
And Jonathan Pierce would believe that a dead man's identity was enough to steal a company.
I closed the wardrobe.
They had made one mistake.
They had assumed I would spend the evening crying over a dress.
Instead, I was preparing to expose a conspiracy.
At 8:00 the next morning, I went downstairs for breakfast.
Vanessa and Brielle were already seated at the kitchen island.
Brielle wore a white silk robe, and her butterfly crown sat beside her coffee cup.
She was scrolling through comments on her latest social media post.
"Look at this, Mother! Someone says I'm going to be the most beautiful woman at the gala.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Of course you are.""
Brielle turned the phone toward me.
"See, Camille? People are already obsessed with my costume.""
I glanced at the photograph.
Thousands of likes.
Hundreds of comments.
Some people were praising the dress.
Others were asking who had designed it.
Brielle had replied to several comments.
Thank you! It took months of my own creative work.
I placed my coffee down.
"That's interesting.""
She looked up.
"What?""
"You've become very creative recently.""
Brielle smiled.
"Jealousy doesn't suit you.""
Vanessa folded her newspaper.
"Camille, I hope you're not planning to attend the gala.""
I spread butter over my toast.
"Why?""
"Because Brielle is the featured performer.""
"I know.""
"Then you understand why it would be inappropriate for you to appear.""
I looked at her.
"Inappropriate?""
"Yes. We don't need another family embarrassment.""
I took a bite of toast.
"Don't worry. I wouldn't want to embarrass you.""
Vanessa looked satisfied.
"Good.""
Brielle leaned forward.
"And please don't try to get backstage. Security has my photograph.""
I smiled.
"That's very reassuring.""
She narrowed her eyes.
"Why are you smiling?""
"Nothing.""
"You're acting strange.""
I picked up my coffee.
"Perhaps I'm excited about Halloween.""
Brielle rolled her eyes.
"Well, stay home and enjoy it. I'll be on the biggest stage in the city.""
I stood.
"Enjoy your breakfast.""
As I walked toward the door, Vanessa called after me.
"Camille.""
I turned.
"Yes?""
"There's something I need you to sign.""
She held up a document.
I recognized it immediately.
A power-of-attorney form.
It would give Vanessa temporary authority over my financial affairs.
I stared at her.
"Why would I sign that?""
"Administrative convenience.""
"You already tried transferring my shares.""
Her face tightened.
"That matter has been resolved.""
"No, it hasn't.""
Brielle sighed.
"Mother, stop wasting time. She isn't going to understand.""
Vanessa pushed the document across the counter.
"Just sign it.""
I looked at the signature line.
Then I looked at her.
"No.""
Her expression turned cold.
"Camille, I am trying to protect this family.""
"From what?""
"From your stubbornness.""
I folded the document and placed it back on the counter.
"Then you should start by protecting it from people who forge signatures.""
I walked away.
Behind me, I heard the sound of a coffee cup hitting the counter.
"YOU UNGRATEFUL GIRL!""
I didn't turn around.
At noon, Olivia called.
"Camille, we found something.""
I sat down at my desk.
"What?""
"The original attorney, Jonathan Pierce, is alive. His supposed death was part of a fraudulent identity arrangement.""
"Can you prove it?""
"We have a bank account opened under his identity six months after his supposed death. The account received payments from a company connected to Martin Caldwell.""
I closed my eyes.
"How much?""
"Just under three million dollars.""
I stared at the wall.
"Who owns the company?""
"That's the interesting part. It's registered to a woman named Vanessa Bennett.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"Can you freeze the account?""
"Not without a formal investigation. But we've submitted the evidence to the relevant authorities.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"There's something else.""
"What?""
"Daniel told me Vanessa is meeting with Jonathan tonight.""
"Then we need to know where.""
"I have the hotel details.""
"Good. I'll contact the investigators.""
I stood.
"Olivia, there's one more thing. I want the original trust documents ready for tomorrow.""
"Already prepared.""
"And the recording?""
"Professionally copied and authenticated.""
I looked at the clock.
"Then we're ready.""
Olivia hesitated.
"Camille, are you sure you want to do this at the gala? There will be thousands of people.""
I looked toward the wardrobe.
At the ice-blue gown.
At the wings.
At the costume that had become so much more than fabric.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
I thought of my father.
Of the little girl who had once believed that being loved meant never making trouble.
Of the years I had spent apologizing for taking up space in my own home.
Then I answered.
"Because they spent years making sure nobody heard my voice. Tomorrow, everyone will.""
At 7:30 that evening, I arrived at the Harrington Hotel.
Daniel was waiting in the lobby.
He wore a dark suit and looked unusually serious.
"Camille.""
"Daniel.""
He handed me a folder.
"These are copies of the documents my father received.""
I opened it.
The first page was a proposed acquisition agreement.
The second was a shareholder authorization.
The third was a letter bearing Jonathan Pierce's name.
I examined the signatures.
"Where is your father?""
"Upstairs. He's meeting with the legal team.""
"Have you spoken to Jonathan?""
"Yes.""
I looked up.
"What did he say?""
"That he has been helping Vanessa recover assets that were supposedly taken from her after your father's death.""
I stared at him.
"That's absurd.""
"I know.""
"Did he mention the trust?""
Daniel nodded.
"He claims your father amended it shortly before dying.""
My stomach tightened.
"He couldn't have. The original trust was locked.""
"That's what I told my father.""
I examined the letter again.
There was a reference to an amendment dated two days before my father's hospitalization.
I recognized the date.
It was the day Martin had confronted my father.
"Daniel, this document is fake.""
"How can you be sure?""
I pointed to the witness section.
"Jonathan Pierce was not authorized to witness a trust amendment without the independent trustee present.""
Daniel frowned.
"And?""
"The independent trustee was Eleanor Whitmore.""
He looked at the document.
"She's not listed.""
"Exactly.""
A man approached us.
Daniel turned.
"Father.""
Richard Harrington was in his early sixties, with silver hair and a stern expression.
He looked at me.
"Miss Bennett.""
"Mr. Harrington.""
He extended his hand.
"Daniel tells me you believe these documents are fraudulent.""
"I know they are.""
He studied me.
"That's a serious accusation.""
"So is attempting to purchase a company using forged ownership documents.""
Richard looked toward his son.
Then he sighed.
"Jonathan is upstairs. I suggest you speak with him.""
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"Father, that's not a good idea.""
Richard ignored him.
"I want this matter settled before tomorrow evening.""
I looked at Daniel.
He gave me a warning glance.
But I nodded.
"All right.""
We took the elevator to the private dining floor.
A security guard stood outside Room 1806.
Inside, a man sat alone at the table.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
A familiar scar near his left eyebrow.
Jonathan Pierce.
He looked up when I entered.
For a moment, his expression was unreadable.
Then he smiled.
"Camille Bennett.""
I sat opposite him.
"Mr. Pierce.""
"You're a grown woman now.""
"And you're supposed to be dead.""
His smile disappeared.
Daniel closed the door behind us.
Jonathan slowly placed his glass on the table.
"Who told you that?""
"The official records.""
He laughed quietly.
"Those records are sometimes inaccurate.""
"Not when someone deliberately falsifies them.""
His eyes narrowed.
"You sound very much like your father.""
"Thank you.""
He leaned forward.
"Your father made many mistakes.""
"Such as trusting you?""
Jonathan's jaw tightened.
"Richard Bennett was a difficult man.""
"He was my father.""
"And he was determined to destroy people who had helped him build his company.""
I placed a copy of the original trust agreement on the table.
"Did you forge this amendment?""
He glanced at it.
Then he looked away.
"I have no idea what you're talking about.""
I opened the folder and showed him the signature.
"That's my father's signature. But he never signed this document.""
Jonathan shrugged.
"Prove it.""
I smiled.
"That's why I brought the original.""
His expression changed.
I placed the document on the table.
He examined the embossed seal.
Then he looked at the date.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely frightened.
"Where did you get this?""
"From my father.""
"That's impossible.""
"Why?""
He stood abruptly.
"Because Martin told me the originals had been destroyed.""
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at me.
I didn't move.
Then I asked quietly:
"Martin told you?""
Jonathan froze.
He realized what he had just said.
I closed the folder.
"Thank you, Mr. Pierce.""
He reached across the table.
"Wait.""
I stood.
"You've said enough.""
As Daniel opened the door, Jonathan called after me.
"Camille! You don't understand what Martin has done!""
I stopped.
"What has he done?""
Jonathan looked toward the hallway.
Then he whispered:
"Your father didn't die because of an accident.""
My entire body went cold.
Before I could ask another question, the hotel room door opened.
Two men entered.
One was wearing a dark security uniform.
The other was Martin Caldwell.
He looked directly at me.
Then he smiled.
"Well, well. The little girl finally found the paperwork.""
He stepped toward Jonathan.
"Mr. Pierce, I believe you've said enough.""
I looked at Martin.
And for the first time, I saw fear behind his arrogance.
May you like
He wasn't worried about losing the company.
He was worried about what Jonathan might reveal.
