Chapter 3: The Invitation That Changed Everything
At seven that evening, Vanessa hosted a private dinner.
She called it a celebration of Brielle's upcoming appearance at the Midnight Masquerade.
I called it an opportunity to watch two people lie to each other over expensive wine.
The dining room had been transformed.
White roses covered the center of the long mahogany table. Silver candles burned beneath the crystal chandelier. A string quartet played softly near the French doors.
Brielle sat beside Vanessa in a pale pink designer dress.
She looked delighted with herself.
Across from them sat a tall man in a charcoal suit.
Daniel Harrington.
I recognized him from the gala's sponsor records.
He was thirty-two, impeccably dressed, and known for being difficult in business negotiations.
His father, Richard Harrington, was one of the largest private investors in the country.
Daniel stood when I entered.
“Good evening.””
“Good evening,” I replied.
Vanessa's smile tightened.
“Camille, you're late.””
“I'm exactly on time.””
Brielle glanced at my simple black dress.
“Couldn't you have dressed up a little?””
I pulled out my chair.
“I didn't realize this was a costume party.””
Daniel hid a smile.
Vanessa noticed.
“Daniel, please excuse Camille. She has never been particularly interested in social occasions.””
“I wouldn't say that,” Daniel replied.
He looked at me.
“Actually, I've heard quite a bit about her.””
Brielle immediately straightened.
“Really? From whom?””
Daniel took a sip of water.
“People who know her work.””
Vanessa laughed awkwardly.
“I'm afraid Camille doesn't work in anything particularly significant.””
I looked at her.
“That's an interesting opinion.””
Brielle leaned toward Daniel.
“I'm the one attending the gala. Mother has arranged everything.””
Daniel placed his glass down.
“Yes. I understand you're wearing a very special gown.””
Brielle's face brightened.
“It's absolutely incredible. A custom butterfly fairy design.””
“Designed by whom?””
Brielle hesitated.
Then she smiled.
“It's a family creation.””
I nearly choked on my water.
Daniel looked at me.
“Is that true?””
“No,” I said.
Vanessa put down her fork.
“Camille.””
“What? He asked.””
Brielle's cheeks flushed.
“You're embarrassing yourself.””
Daniel leaned back.
“Perhaps we should discuss something else.””
“Of course,” Vanessa said quickly.
She reached for the folder beside her plate.
“As you know, the Harrington family has expressed interest in acquiring a partnership with Bennett Holdings.””
Daniel nodded.
“My father is interested in exploring several investment opportunities.””
Vanessa slid the folder across the table.
“We've prepared a preliminary proposal. Brielle would be delighted to serve as the public representative of the new venture.””
Daniel opened the folder.
His expression changed.
He turned several pages.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Who authorized this document?””
Vanessa smiled.
“I did.””
“Under what authority?””
“I am Camille's stepmother and the administrator of the family estate.””
Daniel closed the folder.
“That's not what I asked.””
The room fell silent.
Brielle touched his arm.
“Daniel, there's no need to make this complicated. Mother handles everything.””
Daniel gently moved his arm away.
“I'm afraid it is complicated.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“What exactly do you mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Miss Bennett, are you aware that a request has been submitted to transfer the controlling shares of Bennett Holdings to your stepsister?””
I set down my fork.
“Yes.””
Vanessa went pale.
“That's confidential.””
“Not when it's part of a proposed acquisition.””
Daniel opened the folder again.
“The Harrington Group was approached with an offer claiming that Brielle Bennett has the authority to sell a controlling interest in the company.””
Brielle blinked.
“It's a family arrangement.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
Daniel turned toward me.
“Do you have any objection?””
I smiled faintly.
“Quite a few.””
Vanessa pushed her chair back.
“Camille, this is not the time.””
“Then perhaps you shouldn't have discussed my inheritance at dinner.””
Brielle slammed her hand against the table.
“Your inheritance? You don't even know how to run a business!””
I looked at her.
“And you do?””
“I've been preparing for this my entire life.””
“For what? Wearing expensive clothes?””
Her face reddened.
Vanessa stood.
“Enough! Brielle has been raised to represent this family. You have done nothing but sit in your room and indulge your little fantasies.””
Daniel quietly closed the folder.
“Mrs. Bennett, I think we should stop here.””
Vanessa looked stunned.
“Daniel, surely you don't want to abandon a promising partnership over a misunderstanding.””
“It's not a misunderstanding if the ownership documents are inaccurate.””
Brielle turned toward him.
“Are you saying you won't work with us?””
“I'm saying I need to verify the legal authority of the person offering the shares.””
Vanessa looked at me.
For the first time that evening, there was fear in her eyes.
I picked up my napkin.
“Excuse me. I have a call to make.””
I walked out before anyone could stop me.
In the hallway, I dialed Adrian.
“Everything is arranged?”” I asked.
“Yes. The committee has finalized the announcement.””
“And Eleanor?””
“She wants to speak with you before the event.””
“Tell her I'll call tomorrow.””
There was a pause.
“Camille, there's something else.””
“What?””
“The committee received a complaint this afternoon.””
I stopped walking.
“What kind of complaint?””
“Someone contacted the gala's legal department claiming that your costume design was stolen from an independent artist.””
I looked toward the dining room.
“Who filed it?””
“Brielle Bennett.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Adrian continued.
“She attached photographs of herself wearing the gown and claimed that she had commissioned the original design.””
I let out a slow breath.
“Did she provide proof?””
“She's provided a statement from your stepmother and a preliminary ownership declaration.””
I almost laughed.
“She forged ownership documents?””
“That's what it looks like.””
“Then don't respond yet.””
“Camille, the committee is concerned.””
“Tell Eleanor not to worry. I'll bring the original design records to the gala.””
“Are you sure you want to handle this publicly?””
I glanced through the open dining room doors.
Brielle was laughing again.
Vanessa was whispering something to Daniel.
“Yes,” I said.
“I'm sure.””
I ended the call.
When I returned to the dining room, the atmosphere had changed.
Daniel was standing beside the window.
Vanessa was speaking urgently to him.
Brielle was crying.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Daniel turned.
“Your stepsister has just informed me that she intends to announce an exclusive partnership with the Harrington family at the gala.””
I looked at Brielle.
She wiped her eyes and lifted her chin.
“That's right.””
Daniel's expression was cold.
“Without my father's approval.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, Brielle was only trying to create excitement.””
Brielle pointed at me.
“She deserves nothing! I'm the one with the connections. I'm the one people want to see!””
I studied her face.
“People want to see you?””
“Yes!””
I reached into my bag.
Then I placed the black envelope on the table.
Vanessa frowned.
“What is that?””
“My invitation.””
Brielle laughed.
“Another fake?””
I opened the envelope and removed the card.
The silver butterfly emblem caught the chandelier light.
Daniel's eyes widened.
He stepped closer.
“May I?””
I handed it to him.
He examined the card carefully.
Then he looked at the signature.
*Eleanor Whitmore.*
His expression changed completely.
“Mrs. Bennett,” he said slowly, “do you know what this invitation means?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“It's a gala invitation. Anyone with enough money can get one.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not this one.””
He turned the card over.
At the bottom was a small line of silver lettering.
*Opening Ceremony — Special Guest of the Foundation.*
Brielle snatched the card from his hand.
She read it.
Then she looked at me.
“Why would they invite you?””
I smiled.
“Perhaps you should ask them.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Camille, where did you get this?””
“From the committee.””
“Don't lie.””
“I don't.””
Brielle tossed the invitation onto the table.
“Even if it's real, it doesn't matter. I'll still be wearing the butterfly gown. Everyone will think I'm the fairy queen.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Brielle, I strongly advise you not to wear that gown.””
She laughed.
“Why? Are you jealous?””
“No,” he replied.
“I'm trying to save you from making a serious mistake.””
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
“Daniel, you have no right to threaten my daughter.””
“I'm not threatening her.””
He looked directly at Brielle.
“I'm telling you that the gown you're planning to wear is the centerpiece of a production created by someone whose identity is protected by a legal agreement with the foundation.””
Brielle went quiet.
I watched the realization slowly reach her.
Then Vanessa stepped forward.
“That's ridiculous. Camille made that dress herself. She has no connection to the foundation.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Would you like to tell them?””
I shook my head.
“Not yet.””
He nodded.
“Understood.””
Vanessa stared between us.
“What is going on?””
Daniel picked up his coat.
“I think this dinner is over.””
He walked toward the door.
Brielle followed him.
“Daniel! Wait!””
He stopped.
She smiled desperately.
“Will I see you at the gala?””
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
“Yes.””
Then he glanced at me.
“But I suspect we'll all be meeting someone very different that evening.””
He left.
Vanessa stood frozen beside the table.
Brielle turned toward me.
Her eyes were blazing.
“What have you told him?””
“Nothing.””
“Liar!””
She grabbed the invitation and ripped it in half.
Vanessa gasped.
“Brielle!””
I stared at the torn pieces.
For a moment, I said nothing.
Then I reached into my bag and pulled out my phone.
“That's all right,” I said calmly.
Brielle smirked.
“What?””
“I have another one.””
I showed her the digital confirmation on my screen.
Her smile disappeared.
Vanessa looked at the phone.
Then at me.
“Camille,” she said slowly, “who exactly are you meeting at this gala?””
I put my phone away.
“Everyone.””
I walked toward the stairs.
Behind me, Brielle shouted:
“You think you can humiliate me? I'll make sure you never enter that building!””
I stopped at the bottom step.
Then I turned.
“Brielle, there's something you should know.””
She crossed her arms.
“What?””
I smiled.
“The person who decides who enters that building isn't your mother.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“Then who is?””
I held her gaze.
“Me.””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I continued upstairs.
In my bedroom, I locked the door and opened my laptop.
A secure message from Eleanor Whitmore was waiting.
Camille, we've received the complaint from Brielle Bennett. The committee has also received a second document, apparently signed by your stepmother, requesting that your invitation be revoked.
I stared at the screen.
They weren't simply trying to steal my dress.
They were trying to steal my identity, my inheritance, and my place at the gala.
I typed a reply.
Do not revoke anything. Keep both documents. I want them presented to the committee before the opening ceremony.
Eleanor replied almost immediately.
Are you certain? This could become a very public confrontation.
I looked at the torn invitation lying on my desk.
Then I opened a photograph of the original gown.
Its wings spread beneath the studio lights, magnificent and untouched.
I typed:
I'm counting on it.
A final message appeared.
One more thing, Camille. Your father left something with me before he died. He specifically instructed me to give it to you when you were ready to reveal your identity.
My fingers froze above the keyboard.
What did he leave?
The response came a few seconds later.
A sealed recording. And a document concerning the person who has been managing your family's estate.
I leaned closer to the screen.
Then another message arrived.
Camille, I don't think you understand. Your father suspected Vanessa would eventually try to take everything from you.
My stomach tightened.
What did he know?
Eleanor's final message appeared.
He knew she had already tried once.
I stared at the screen.
Outside my bedroom, I heard Brielle laughing as she spoke to someone on the phone.
“Don't worry,” she said.
“By Halloween, I'll have everything.””
I slowly closed my laptop.
May you like
For the first time, I wondered whether stealing my gown had been only the beginning.
And whether my father's final secret was about to destroy the family Vanessa had spent years pretending to protect.
