Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much
Dad didn't speak for several seconds after the call ended.
He stood in the office holding his phone, staring at the wall.
I watched him.
"Kayla went with Vanessa?""
He nodded.
"Apparently.""
"She knew about the forged documents?""
"I don't know how much she knew.""
I walked toward the desk.
"She knew about the bracelet. She knew about the kitchen incident. And now she was involved in the paperwork.""
Dad looked exhausted.
"I need to hear this from her.""
"She'll lie.""
"Maybe. But she's still my daughter.""
I swallowed.
"And I'm your daughter too.""
He looked at me.
"I know.""
"Then please don't let her tears change what you already know.""
He reached for my hand.
"I won't.""
At 2:15 p.m., the document preparation service emailed the records to Dad's attorney.
The records included an appointment confirmation, a scanned copy of the documents Vanessa had brought, and an authorization form.
But the most important item was a recorded consultation.
The service had recorded the meeting for quality control purposes.
Dad opened the audio file.
A woman's voice spoke first.
"Mrs. Brooks, before we proceed, I need to confirm that the beneficiary has voluntarily agreed to the change.""
Vanessa answered.
"Yes. Tiana is fully aware.""
"Does she know the entire trust will be transferred to Kayla?""
"She does.""
"And has she signed the authorization?""
"Yes.""
The employee paused.
"I'm sorry, but the signature doesn't appear to match the identification document.""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"She signed it when she was younger. Her signature has changed.""
"Could we speak with her directly?""
"No. She's unavailable.""
"Then we can't complete the verification.""
Vanessa's voice became sharper.
"Listen, I've already explained that my husband authorized this. He's extremely busy, and I handle these things for him.""
The employee replied calmly.
"We still require his direct confirmation.""
Vanessa sighed.
"He's aware. He wants Kayla protected.""
There was a pause.
Then the employee asked:
"Would you like to reschedule when both parties can attend?""
Vanessa answered:
"No. Just prepare the documents. I'll get the remaining signature later.""
The recording ended.
Dad sat back.
"She lied about everything.""
I stared at the laptop.
"She was going to make it look like I agreed.""
He nodded.
"And she used my name to make the request appear legitimate.""
For the first time, I felt the full weight of what had happened.
Vanessa hadn't simply wanted me out of the house.
She wanted me to surrender my financial future without knowing it.
And she had recruited Kayla to help.
That evening, Dad asked Kayla to come downstairs.
She entered the living room wearing her school uniform, her backpack hanging from one shoulder.
She stopped when she saw the documents on the table.
"What's going on?""
Dad gestured toward the chair.
"Sit down.""
Kayla looked at Vanessa's empty seat.
"Where's Mom?""
"She's upstairs.""
Kayla sat slowly.
Dad placed the document preparation receipt in front of her.
"Do you remember going to this office with your mother?""
Kayla glanced at the receipt.
Her fingers tightened around her backpack strap.
"No.""
Dad opened the audio recording.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
Kayla's face changed.
When the recording ended, she stared at the carpet.
Dad leaned forward.
"Kayla, I need you to tell me the truth.""
"I don't know anything.""
"Your mother said you were with her.""
"I just went shopping.""
"At a document preparation office?""
Kayla shrugged.
"I don't remember.""
I sat quietly on the couch.
I wanted to ask her how she could do this to me.
But Dad had to hear it from her.
He opened the tablet and played the previous night's recording.
The conversation about the trust played again.
When Vanessa said she wanted to replace me as beneficiary, Kayla looked down.
Then came the part about the bracelet.
"Leave it in her room.""
Kayla began crying.
Dad paused the recording.
"Did you help your mother frame Tiana?""
Kayla shook her head.
"No!""
"Then why did you agree to this?""
"Because...""
She stopped.
Dad waited.
"Because Mom said it was fair.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Fair?""
Kayla turned toward me.
"You already have everything!""
I stared at her.
"What do I have, Kayla?""
"Money! Dad always worries about you! You get to live here without paying rent, and everyone acts like you're so special!""
I stood slowly.
"I worked two jobs to pay for college books. I bought my own car. I never asked Dad for your money.""
"But you have the trust!""
"Because my mother left it for me!""
Kayla's face twisted.
"Well, Mom said it was supposed to belong to all of us.""
"Your mother lied.""
"She said Dad promised!""
Dad stood.
"I never promised that.""
Kayla looked at him.
"But Mom said—"
"I know what your mother said. And I know what she did.""
Kayla began sobbing.
"She just wanted me to have something!""
Dad lowered his voice.
"Then she should have built something for you without stealing from your sister.""
Kayla covered her face.
I sat down again.
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.
She was seventeen.
Still young enough to believe everything her mother told her.
But she was old enough to understand that throwing herself onto the kitchen floor and accusing me of hurting her was wrong.
"Did you know Mom was going to make you the beneficiary?"" I asked.
Kayla nodded faintly.
"She told me after the office appointment.""
"And you agreed?""
Kayla wiped her eyes.
"She said it was only paperwork.""
"Paperwork that stole my inheritance.""
"I didn't think it would actually happen.""
I looked at her.
"You watched her lie about me. You watched her slap me. And you did nothing.""
Kayla began crying harder.
"I didn't know what to do.""
"Yes, you did. You could have told the truth.""
She looked away.
Dad placed both hands on the table.
"There's one more thing I need to ask.""
Kayla sniffed.
"What?""
"Did you know your mother planned to use the kitchen incident to get Tiana removed from the house?""
Kayla nodded.
Dad closed his eyes.
"How long have you known?""
"Since last week.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Last week?""
Kayla nodded again.
"Mom said if Dad saw Tiana acting aggressively, he'd finally understand.""
"Did she tell you to throw yourself onto the floor?""
Kayla didn't answer.
Dad's voice became firm.
"Kayla.""
She whispered, "Yes.""
The room went silent.
I felt tears sting my eyes.
Not because I was surprised.
Because some part of me had still hoped Kayla hadn't planned every detail.
Dad sat down.
"Why?""
Kayla stared at her hands.
"Mom said Tiana was going to leave eventually. She said we just had to help things along.""
"And the bracelet?""
"Mom hid it in the laundry room.""
I looked at her.
"Why did she say it was in my room?""
"She was going to move it later.""
Dad stared at her.
"Move it?""
Kayla nodded.
"She said she'd put it in Tiana's desk after the argument. Then she could tell you she'd found it.""
I felt nauseated.
The plan had been more elaborate than I imagined.
Vanessa had wanted an injured daughter, a missing bracelet, and a guilty stepdaughter.
Three pieces of evidence.
All manufactured.
Dad stood.
"Where is your mother now?""
Kayla looked toward the stairs.
"I don't know.""
"Did she tell you she was leaving?""
Kayla hesitated.
Then she reached into her backpack and removed a folded sheet of paper.
"She told me to give you this if you found out about the trust.""
Dad took it.
The paper contained a short handwritten message.
Daniel, if you are reading this, Tiana has finally turned you against me. I have done everything for this family, and I refuse to be treated like a criminal. Don't contact me until you are ready to admit what your daughter has done.
Dad read it twice.
Then he turned the paper over.
There was another line.
Kayla knows where the remaining documents are.
He looked at her.
"Where?""
Kayla's lips trembled.
"In Mom's car.""
Dad immediately called his attorney.
But before he could finish explaining, his phone rang.
It was the trust administrator.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice spoke urgently.
"Mr. Brooks, we received another communication from your wife's email address.""
Dad straightened.
"What communication?""
"An instruction to withdraw the entire balance from the trust.""
His face went white.
"That's impossible. The account is frozen.""
"There's a problem. The withdrawal request includes a document stating that you approved an emergency disbursement.""
"Who submitted it?""
The woman hesitated.
"Someone using your electronic authorization.""
Dad looked at me.
Then he asked the question that made my stomach drop.
"Has the money been transferred?""
The answer came after a long pause.
"Not yet. But the request is scheduled for processing tomorrow morning.""
Dad ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Kayla began trembling.
"Mom said she was going to fix everything tonight.""
Dad turned toward her.
"What does that mean?""
Kayla looked at me.
Her eyes filled with fear.
"She said she was going to get the money before you could stop her.""
"Where is she?""
Kayla shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Then she whispered something else.
"She took Noah.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Kayla began crying.
"She picked him up from school early. She told me she was taking him to her friend's house.""
Dad immediately grabbed his keys.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she said I would never see her again if I told you!""
I stood.
"Call the police.""
Dad was already dialing.
But then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
There was a photograph attached.
It showed Noah sitting in the passenger seat of Vanessa's car.
His face was pale.
His tablet was clutched against his chest.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
*STOP DIGGING INTO MY LIFE. TELL DANIEL TO CANCEL THE INVESTIGATION. IF HE DOESN'T, YOU MAY NEVER SEE YOUR LITTLE BROTHER AGAIN.*
I felt the room tilt.
Then another message arrived.
*AND TELL HIM I HAVE THE ORIGINAL TRUST DOCUMENTS. HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HIS FIRST WIFE REALLY SIGNED.*
I looked at Dad.
He read the message over my shoulder.
His face changed completely.
May you like
Because whatever Vanessa had been hiding, it apparently involved my mother.
And she had just threatened to use it.
