Chapter 3: What Vanessa Was Really Planning
Dad sat at the dining room table with Noah's tablet in front of him.
I stood beside the window.
Outside, the evening sky had turned dark, and the garden lights illuminated the wet grass.
Nobody had switched on the chandelier.
Only the small lamp beside the dining table was glowing.
"Are you sure this is from last night?"" Dad asked.
Noah nodded.
"I was playing a game, but I heard Mom and Kayla talking in the kitchen. I started recording because they were saying Tiana's name.""
Dad looked at me.
"Did you know about this?""
"No.""
Noah tapped the video.
The screen showed the kitchen again.
This time, the camera was positioned behind a bowl of fruit on the counter.
Vanessa stood near the refrigerator.
Kayla was sitting on a stool, scrolling through her phone.
The conversation began halfway through.
Vanessa's voice was clear.
"Your father has been asking why Tiana is still living here.""
Kayla looked up.
"Then tell him to make her leave.""
"I've tried.""
"Then make him choose.""
Vanessa sighed.
"Daniel is stubborn. He thinks Tiana is still that little girl whose mother died. He feels guilty.""
Kayla rolled her eyes.
"That's his problem.""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Listen to me. If we can prove she's unstable, he'll have no choice.""
I felt my stomach turn.
Dad paused the video.
"Unstable?""
I nodded slowly.
"Keep playing.""
He pressed the screen.
Vanessa continued.
"She's twenty-two. She's old enough to take care of herself. But your father keeps treating her like she owns this house.""
Kayla laughed.
"She doesn't even pay rent.""
"Exactly. And that's what we're going to change.""
Kayla leaned forward.
"How?""
Vanessa glanced toward the hallway.
"We'll make it look like she's becoming aggressive. Your father already worries about the arguments. If he believes she's a danger to you and Noah, he'll ask her to leave.""
Kayla smiled.
"What if she doesn't?""
"She will. Once Daniel sees how much trouble she's causing, he'll make the decision himself.""
Kayla picked at her fingernails.
"What about the bracelet?""
Vanessa answered immediately.
"Leave it in her room.""
I felt a chill run down my arms.
Dad paused the video again.
"Which bracelet?""
I looked at him.
"The one Kayla accused me of stealing.""
His face tightened.
He pressed play.
Kayla was speaking now.
"What if Dad finds it?""
"He won't.""
"What if Tiana finds it first?""
Vanessa gave a small laugh.
"Then she'll have to explain why it's in her bedroom.""
Kayla grinned.
"You're so smart, Mom.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Someone has to think ahead.""
Dad slowly lowered the tablet.
For several seconds, he stared at the table.
Then he asked a question I hadn't expected.
"Did you know she was planning to get rid of you?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
He looked devastated.
"I thought the arguments were just... normal family disagreements.""
I let out a bitter laugh.
"That's what she wanted you to think.""
He rubbed both hands over his face.
"I should have noticed.""
I didn't answer.
Because noticing now didn't erase the years I had spent trying to convince him.
Noah suddenly pointed at the screen.
"Wait, Daddy.""
Dad looked down.
"What?""
"The video isn't finished.""
He pressed play.
The camera continued recording.
Vanessa moved closer to Kayla.
"There's something else you need to remember.""
Kayla put her phone down.
"What?""
"Your father is going to review the household accounts next week.""
"Why?""
"Because he wants to refinance the house.""
Kayla frowned.
"Does that matter?""
Vanessa looked toward the camera's direction.
For a moment, she seemed almost nervous.
"It matters because Tiana is still listed as a beneficiary on your father's life insurance and estate documents.""
Dad went completely still.
I turned toward him.
"What?""
He didn't answer.
On the screen, Kayla asked, "Why?""
Vanessa sighed.
"Because your father never changed the paperwork after his first wife died. He made arrangements for Tiana years ago.""
Kayla frowned.
"So?""
"So if Tiana remains in the picture, she will continue to have a claim to certain things.""
Kayla's voice sharpened.
"That's not fair. I'm his daughter too.""
"Exactly.""
Vanessa leaned closer.
"And that's why we need to deal with this before he reviews everything.""
Dad paused the recording.
His face had gone pale.
"What paperwork?"" I asked.
He looked at me.
"Your mother and I had a trust.""
I blinked.
"A trust?""
He nodded slowly.
"After she died, I set aside money for your education and future. The arrangement was supposed to protect your interests.""
"I thought you paid for college from your savings.""
"I did pay some expenses. But there was a separate account.""
I stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I thought I had explained it when you were younger.""
"You didn't.""
He looked away.
Noah was still watching the screen.
"There's more," he whispered.
Dad pressed play.
Vanessa's voice returned.
"Once Tiana leaves, your father will be much easier to convince. We'll tell him the trust needs to be restructured for the younger children.""
Kayla frowned.
"Can we use the money?""
"Eventually.""
"How much is there?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"Enough to make sure you never have to worry.""
Dad abruptly stopped the recording.
His chair scraped against the floor.
"That's enough.""
I stared at him.
"Did she try to take my money?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know exactly what she has done.""
"Then we need to find out.""
He looked at the tablet.
"Yes.""
Noah pulled at his sleeve.
"Daddy?""
Dad crouched beside him.
"Yes, buddy?""
"Am I in trouble for recording?""
Dad's expression softened.
"No. You did the right thing.""
"But Mom said recording people is bad.""
Dad looked at him for a long moment.
"Recording someone to hurt them can be wrong. But telling the truth about something important is different. You were scared, and you wanted someone to know what happened.""
Noah nodded.
"Are you going to send Mom away?""
Dad didn't answer immediately.
He glanced toward the staircase.
"First, I need to understand everything she's done.""
At 8:40 p.m., Dad called Vanessa downstairs.
She appeared wearing a silk robe, her hair neatly arranged.
She looked as though she had spent the last hour preparing for a different kind of conversation.
"What is this about?"" she asked.
Dad stood beside the dining table.
"Sit down.""
Vanessa glanced at me.
"Why is she here?""
"Because this concerns her.""
Vanessa gave a small laugh.
"Daniel, we've already discussed the incident. I apologized for losing my temper.""
"No, you haven't.""
"I was protecting my daughter.""
Dad placed the tablet on the table.
"Then explain this.""
He played the recording from the previous night.
Vanessa watched herself speak.
Her expression remained controlled until Kayla's voice mentioned the bracelet.
Then her eyes narrowed.
When the video ended, she looked at Dad.
"You're going to believe a recording made by a nine-year-old?""
"I'm going to believe what I heard.""
"Children misunderstand things.""
"Did you tell Kayla to put her bracelet in Tiana's room?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I don't remember saying that.""
"Did you tell her to make Tiana look unstable?""
"Daniel, you're twisting my words.""
"Did you plan to have Tiana removed from this house so you could change the trust?""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"That trust is a family matter.""
"It belongs to Tiana.""
"It was created when she was a child!""
"And?""
"She is an adult now. She doesn't need it.""
I stepped forward.
"That's not your decision.""
Vanessa turned toward me.
"Stay out of this.""
Dad raised his hand.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
Vanessa stared at him.
Then something in her expression changed.
The tears disappeared.
The gentle wife vanished.
"Fine," she said.
"You want the truth? Your daughter has been a problem since the day I married you.""
Dad's face hardened.
"She's my daughter.""
"And Kayla is yours too!""
"Yes. Both of them.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Then why does Tiana get everything?""
I stared at her.
"What exactly have I taken from you?""
"You've always had a special place in his heart. Every time Kayla needs something, he has to consider how Tiana will feel.""
"That's not true.""
"Of course you would say that.""
Vanessa turned back to Dad.
"I gave up years of my life trying to make this family work.""
Dad looked at her.
"And you repaid that by planning to frame my daughter?""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"I was trying to protect Kayla's future.""
"By stealing from Tiana?""
"Nobody stole anything!""
"Then why were you planning to change the trust before I reviewed it?""
She stood abruptly.
"Because I knew you would never make the right decision!""
Dad took a step back.
"Sit down, Vanessa.""
"No.""
"Then we're finished talking tonight.""
She grabbed her phone.
"You can't do this.""
Dad's voice was quiet.
"Do what?""
"Throw me out because of one stupid video.""
I looked at her.
"One video?""
She glared at me.
"Don't look so pleased with yourself.""
"I'm not pleased. I'm just tired.""
Vanessa turned toward the stairs.
But before she reached them, Dad spoke again.
"Where is the bracelet?""
She stopped.
"What?""
"The bracelet Kayla supposedly lost. Where is it?""
Vanessa said nothing.
Dad looked at me.
"Tomorrow morning, we're going to search the house.""
Vanessa's lips parted.
"You don't trust me?""
"I don't know what to believe anymore.""
She stared at him.
Then she slowly climbed the stairs.
A few seconds later, a bedroom door slammed.
The next morning, Dad asked me to help him search Kayla's room.
Kayla was at school.
Vanessa had left early, claiming she needed to visit a friend.
Dad opened the closet while I checked the drawers.
We found nothing unusual at first.
Then I noticed a small pink jewelry box underneath a pile of sweaters.
"What's that?""
Dad picked it up.
Inside was Kayla's missing designer bracelet.
He stared at it.
"Why would she hide it here?""
I shook my head.
"She didn't.""
He looked at me.
"You think Vanessa put it here?""
"I think they planned to put it in my room. Maybe Kayla changed her mind.""
Dad carefully closed the box.
"We need to document this.""
He took photographs and placed the bracelet in a small evidence bag.
Then he called his attorney.
I sat on the edge of Kayla's bed, looking at the pale pink walls and expensive decorations.
For years, I had believed that if I were kinder, quieter, and more accommodating, Vanessa might eventually accept me.
Now I understood.
She hadn't wanted a daughter.
She had wanted control.
Dad ended his phone call.
"There's something else I need to tell you.""
I looked up.
"What?""
"Your mother left something for you.""
My heart tightened.
"What do you mean?""
"Before she died, she arranged for a separate investment account to be held in trust. I was the trustee. You were the beneficiary.""
I stared at him.
"How much?""
He hesitated.
"With the original contributions and investment growth, it's substantial.""
"How substantial?""
He gave me a figure.
I couldn't speak.
It was enough to pay off a house.
Enough to build a future.
Enough to explain why Vanessa had been so determined to make me disappear.
Dad lowered his voice.
"Your mother wanted you to have financial security. I should have made sure you understood that.""
I swallowed.
"Does Vanessa have access to it?""
"She shouldn't.""
"Shouldn't?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"She has been helping me organize some household financial documents. I need to check whether she accessed any confidential information.""
Before I could respond, his phone rang.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
I couldn't hear the words clearly.
Dad's expression changed.
"What do you mean the documents were requested?""
He listened.
Then he looked at me.
"Who authorized the request?""
Another pause.
His face became almost white.
"Send me the name.""
He ended the call.
"What happened?"" I asked.
Dad slowly lowered his phone.
"Someone contacted the trust administrator last month.""
"Who?""
He looked toward the doorway.
"Vanessa.""
My stomach dropped.
"Did she try to withdraw the money?""
"Not exactly.""
He swallowed.
"She requested a complete change-of-beneficiary package.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"She wanted to replace you with Kayla.""
For several seconds, the room seemed to spin.
Then Dad's phone vibrated again.
A new email had arrived.
He opened it.
I watched his eyes move across the screen.
And then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"Tiana... there's a second request.""
"What second request?""
He turned the phone toward me.
The email contained a scanned document bearing my name.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
But I had never signed it.
And beneath the signature was a sentence that made everything suddenly much worse:
*I voluntarily surrender all beneficiary rights and authorize the transfer of the entire trust balance to Kayla Brooks.*
I looked at Dad.
"That's not my signature.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
Then he scrolled to the final page.
The witness section contained another name.
A name neither of us expected to see.
*Daniel Brooks.*
My father's signature was there too.
And according to the document, he had witnessed me surrender my inheritance three weeks earlier.
I looked at him.
He looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
May you like
Because now we had a new question.
If Vanessa had forged my signature, who had helped her forge my father's?
