Chapter 1: The Girl on the Kitchen Floor
"Get out of my house, Tiana! You are not going to stand there and pretend you didn't hurt my daughter!""
Vanessa's voice shattered the quiet Sunday afternoon.
Before I could answer, her hand struck my face.
The sound echoed through the kitchen.
My head snapped sideways, and a burning sensation spread across my cheek. For a moment, I couldn't move. I could only stare at the woman standing in front of me, her chest rising and falling, her eyes filled with an anger that seemed almost rehearsed.
Behind her, my stepsister Kayla lay sprawled across the kitchen floor, clutching her wrist.
She was crying.
Or pretending to.
I had watched her throw herself onto the tiles less than ten seconds earlier.
And somehow, I was the villain.
"My God, Tiana!"" Vanessa screamed.
"Look what you've done!""
"I didn't touch her!""
"Don't you dare lie to me!""
Kayla let out another dramatic sob.
"Mom, my wrist really hurts," she whispered.
"I told her I didn't want her going through my things.""
I looked down at Kayla.
Her eyes met mine for half a second.
And beneath the tears, I saw something that made my stomach tighten.
A tiny smile.
She was enjoying this.
My name is Tiana Brooks. I was twenty-two years old, and for the past six years, I had lived in a house where being quiet was the only way to avoid trouble.
My father, Daniel, had married Vanessa when I was sixteen, three years after my mother died.
At first, I thought having another woman in the house might make things easier. I imagined family dinners, holidays, and someone to talk to when Dad worked late.
I was wrong.
Vanessa never openly announced that she disliked me. She was much smarter than that.
She started with little things.
My laundry disappeared from the dryer.
My favorite mug was suddenly Kayla's.
The groceries I bought with my own money were labeled with Kayla's name.
Then came the comments.
"Your mother never taught you to keep a proper home, did she?""
"You're twenty-two, Tiana. You should be grateful your father still lets you live here.""
"Kayla is younger. You need to learn to be more considerate.""
Whenever I told Dad, Vanessa would cry.
She would sit beside him on the couch, wipe her eyes with a tissue, and explain that she was only trying to make us a family.
Dad always believed her.
He worked long hours managing a construction company, and he hated conflict. Whenever Vanessa and I disagreed, he would rub his forehead and say the same thing.
"Please, sweetheart. Just try to get along.""
So I tried.
I tried until trying became another word for accepting everything.
But that Sunday, something had changed.
It began with Kayla's missing designer bracelet.
I had just finished washing dishes when she stormed into the kitchen.
"Where is it?"" she demanded.
I turned off the faucet.
"Where's what?""
"My bracelet.""
"I don't know.""
"Don't play stupid. I left it on the bathroom counter.""
"Then maybe it's still there.""
Kayla folded her arms.
"I checked.""
"Then check again.""
Her face tightened.
"You think you're funny?""
"No. I think you're looking for someone to blame.""
She stepped closer.
"Mom was right about you.""
I picked up a dish towel.
"Kayla, I'm not doing this today.""
She suddenly reached across the counter and grabbed my wrist.
"Give it back!""
I pulled away.
"Let go of me!""
Her fingers slipped from my arm.
Then, before I could understand what was happening, Kayla threw herself backward.
She deliberately knocked a wooden chair aside and landed hard on the kitchen floor.
The chair crashed against the cabinets.
Kayla immediately began screaming.
"Mom! Mom!""
I stood frozen.
"What are you doing?""
Vanessa came running from the living room.
When she saw Kayla on the floor, her expression changed instantly.
She rushed to her daughter, dropped to her knees, and cradled Kayla's head.
"Baby! What happened?""
Kayla pointed at me with her trembling hand.
"She pushed me!""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"She pushed me because I wouldn't give her the bracelet!""
"That's a lie!""
Vanessa slowly turned toward me.
Her expression was terrifyingly calm.
"Did you just push my daughter?""
"No! She grabbed me, then threw herself onto the floor!""
Kayla began sobbing louder.
"My wrist! Mom, it hurts!""
Vanessa looked at me as if I were a stranger who had broken into her home.
"You're unbelievable.""
"Vanessa, listen to me.""
"Don't call me that.""
"She fell on purpose!""
That was when Vanessa stood up.
And slapped me.
Now, with my cheek burning, I watched her pull Kayla into her arms.
"Go upstairs and pack your things," she ordered.
I blinked.
"What?""
"You heard me. I won't have someone who attacks my daughter living under this roof.""
"This is Dad's house too.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"And I'm his wife.""
The words landed harder than the slap.
I glanced toward the hallway.
"Dad will want to hear what happened.""
"Your father knows exactly what kind of person you are.""
"No, he doesn't.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You've spent years making this family miserable. You're jealous of Kayla, you're disrespectful, and now you've physically attacked her.""
"You're making all of this up!""
She pointed toward the stairs.
"Get out of my sight.""
Kayla was still sitting on the floor.
She had stopped crying.
When Vanessa looked away, Kayla leaned her head against her mother's shoulder and whispered something.
I couldn't hear the words.
But I saw Vanessa nod.
Then Kayla looked directly at me.
Her lips moved.
You're finished.
I felt something cold settle inside my chest.
I wanted to scream. I wanted to grab the phone and call Dad immediately. I wanted someone to believe me for once.
Instead, I turned and walked toward the stairs.
I wasn't going to give Vanessa the satisfaction of watching me cry.
As I passed the hallway, I noticed Noah sitting on the bottom step.
My nine-year-old half-brother had his tablet resting on his knees.
He was unusually quiet.
"Hey, buddy," I whispered.
He looked up.
His dark eyes moved from my face to the red mark on my cheek.
"Tiana?""
"I'm okay.""
He frowned.
"Did Kayla really fall?""
I hesitated.
"Noah, you saw what happened?""
He nodded slowly.
"I was watching.""
Vanessa's voice suddenly rang out behind us.
"Noah! Go to your room!""
The little boy flinched.
He grabbed his tablet and hurried upstairs.
I continued toward my bedroom.
Inside, I closed the door and leaned against it.
My hands were shaking.
I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the framed photograph on my nightstand.
It was a picture of my mother and me at the beach.
She was smiling, her hair blowing across her face, one arm wrapped around my shoulders.
I touched the glass.
"Mom, I really wish you were here.""
For several minutes, I stayed there, listening to the sounds downstairs.
Vanessa was speaking on the phone.
Kayla was laughing.
Then I heard something else.
A door opening.
Footsteps.
Noah.
There was a soft knock.
I wiped my face and opened the door.
He stood in the hallway, holding his tablet against his chest.
"Can I come in?""
"Of course.""
He slipped inside and closed the door carefully.
Then he looked at me.
"Tiana, I need to show you something.""
He placed the tablet on my bed.
The screen was already open to a video.
I frowned.
"What is this?""
"I was recording.""
My heart skipped.
"Recording what?""
"The kitchen.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
Noah looked down at his shoes.
"Because Kayla told Mom yesterday that she was going to make you leave.""
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
"What did you just say?""
He swallowed.
"I heard them talking. Kayla said she was tired of you living here. She said Mom promised she would fix it.""
I sat down slowly.
"Fix what?""
Noah shook his head.
"I don't know.""
He tapped the screen.
The video began.
There I was, standing beside the sink.
Kayla entered the kitchen.
The camera angle was slightly tilted, but everything was visible.
I watched Kayla grab my wrist.
I watched her release it.
And then I watched her throw herself backward.
The chair fell.
Her body hit the floor.
Then came the screaming.
My mouth fell open.
"That's... that's everything.""
Noah nodded.
"I didn't know what else to do.""
I pulled him into my arms.
"Oh, Noah.""
He hugged me tightly.
"Mom said I wasn't allowed to tell Dad when Kayla gets in trouble.""
I pulled back.
"She said that?""
He nodded.
"She said Dad gets stressed because of work. She said we should let her handle family problems.""
I looked at the tablet again.
"Does the video show Vanessa slapping me?""
Noah tapped the screen.
"Yes.""
I watched the footage again.
Vanessa entered.
She never asked what happened.
She never checked whether Kayla had actually injured herself.
She immediately accused me.
Then she slapped me.
And the most disturbing part was what happened after.
Once Vanessa thought the camera was no longer relevant, she leaned toward Kayla and whispered something.
The recording caught every word.
"Good. Now we just need your father to believe that she's dangerous.""
I froze.
Noah looked at me.
"Is that bad?""
I couldn't answer immediately.
Because suddenly, I understood something.
Kayla hadn't simply wanted to get me in trouble.
Vanessa had been preparing for this.
"Does Dad know you have this?"" I asked.
Noah shook his head.
"I want to show him.""
I looked at the door.
Downstairs, Vanessa's voice floated up through the house.
She was laughing again.
Then she called out.
"Tiana! Have you started packing yet?""
I looked at Noah.
He clutched his tablet tighter.
And for the first time that afternoon, I felt something other than fear.
Hope.
"Not yet," I whispered.
Then I looked at the video.
"Because I think your father needs to see this first.""
Noah nodded.
But before either of us could move, his tablet vibrated.
A message had appeared on the screen.
It was from Vanessa.
*NOAH, BRING YOUR TABLET DOWNSTAIRS. MOM NEEDS TO CHECK SOMETHING.*
Noah's face went pale.
I stared at the message.
Then another notification appeared.
This time, it was a voice recording.
May you like
Its title made my blood run cold.
*KAYLA'S PLAN — MOM'S PHONE.*
