Chapter 2: The Secret Recording

For several seconds, neither Noah nor I moved.

The tablet continued glowing between us.

"Kayla's Plan — Mom's Phone.""

I read the title again.

"Where did this come from?"" I whispered.

Noah shook his head.

"I don't know. It just appeared.""

"Did you download it?""

"No. I think it came from Mom's shared family account.""

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa had connected several household devices to one family account. She used it to monitor screen time, manage purchases, and control what Noah could access.

I had never paid much attention to it.

Now, that little connection might have exposed something much bigger.

Another message appeared.

*MOM: NOAH, I SAID BRING IT DOWNSTAIRS. NOW.*

Noah looked toward the door.

"She's going to take it.""

I stood.

"Listen to me. Don't argue with her. Don't tell her what we watched.""

"What if she asks?""

"Tell her you were playing a game.""

He hesitated.

"But the video—"

"I know. We'll protect it.""

I took the tablet and opened the file details.

The recording was saved locally, and there was also a copy in the family's cloud storage.

That was important.

Even if Vanessa took the tablet, the original footage might still exist elsewhere.

I didn't know much about the technical details, but I knew enough not to trust a single copy.

I sent the video to my own email address and waited until the upload confirmation appeared.

Then I made a second copy.

Noah watched me carefully.

"Are you going to show Dad?""

"Yes.""

"Tonight?""

"Tonight.""

A sudden knock made us jump.

"Tiana!""

Vanessa.

Her voice was no longer pretending to be gentle.

"Open this door.""

I handed the tablet back to Noah.

"Remember what I said.""

He nodded.

I opened the door.

Vanessa stood there wearing a pale blue blouse and the diamond earrings Dad had bought her for their anniversary.

Her eyes moved immediately to the tablet.

"There you are," she said.

"Noah was just showing me a game.""

Vanessa extended her hand.

"Give it to me, sweetheart.""

Noah looked at me.

I kept my face neutral.

"Why do you need it?"" I asked.

Vanessa gave me a cold smile.

"Because it's mine. I pay for the internet, the apps, and everything connected to it.""

"It's Noah's tablet.""

"It's a device I purchased.""

She turned toward him.

"Come downstairs. I want to check something.""

Noah stepped behind me.

"Can I finish my game first?""

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"Don't make me ask twice.""

I moved slightly between them.

"He's had a difficult afternoon. Let him calm down.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"You've caused enough problems for one day, Tiana.""

"I didn't cause any problems.""

"Really? Then why is my daughter sitting in her room with an injured wrist?""

"Because she threw herself on the floor.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You have a serious problem with accepting responsibility.""

"And you have a problem with telling the truth.""

Her face hardened.

For a moment, I thought she might slap me again.

Instead, she leaned close enough that only I could hear her.

"You should have left when I told you.""

Then she turned and walked downstairs.

Noah waited until her footsteps disappeared.

"She knows something," he whispered.

"Maybe.""

"Are you scared?""

I looked at his small face.

"Yes.""

He seemed surprised.

I smiled faintly.

"But being scared doesn't mean we're going to let her win.""

At 6:18 p.m., Dad came home.

I heard his keys hit the entryway table.

Then Vanessa's voice changed.

It became softer, sweeter.

"Oh, Daniel. You're home.""

"Hey, honey. How was your afternoon?""

"Terrible, actually.""

I stood at the top of the stairs.

Vanessa was already moving toward him.

Kayla sat on the couch with a bandage wrapped around her wrist.

She looked like a child in a hospital advertisement.

Dad immediately noticed.

"What happened?""

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"It's Tiana.""

Dad's expression changed.

"What about Tiana?""

Kayla began to sniffle.

"She got angry with me.""

I walked down the stairs.

"That's not what happened.""

Dad looked between us.

"Okay. Everyone calm down. What happened?""

Vanessa placed a hand on his arm.

"Your daughter attacked Kayla in the kitchen.""

Dad stared at me.

"Tiana?""

"I didn't touch her.""

Kayla looked up.

"Why are you lying?""

"Kayla, you know exactly what you did.""

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

"See? This is what I've been dealing with for years.""

Dad rubbed his forehead.

"Can someone please explain this without shouting?""

Vanessa moved closer to him.

"Kayla found out that Tiana had been looking through her things. When she confronted her, Tiana shoved her so hard she fell.""

"That's a lie," I said.

"Then why did Kayla fall?""

"She threw herself backward!""

Kayla gasped.

"Mom, can we please go? I don't want to be near her.""

Dad looked exhausted.

"Tiana, I need you to understand that putting your hands on someone is serious.""

"I understand. But I didn't do it.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Daniel, I think we should ask her to leave for a few days. Kayla is frightened.""

I stared at Dad.

"You're going to believe her without even asking me what happened?""

"I am asking you.""

"No. You're listening to Vanessa.""

His jaw tightened.

"Watch your tone.""

The words hurt more than I expected.

For a moment, I was sixteen again, standing in the hallway after Vanessa had accused me of breaking one of Kayla's expensive makeup palettes.

Dad had looked at me the same way.

Disappointed.

Tired.

Already convinced.

I took a breath.

"There's something you need to see.""

Vanessa's head snapped toward me.

"What?""

I looked at Noah, who had appeared at the top of the stairs.

He was holding his tablet.

"Dad," I said, "Noah recorded what happened.""

The room went silent.

Vanessa's face lost its color.

Just for a second.

Then she laughed.

"That's ridiculous.""

Noah came downstairs.

He stopped beside Dad.

"I recorded it, Daddy.""

Dad crouched slightly.

"You did?""

Noah nodded.

"I was sitting on the stairs. I saw everything.""

Vanessa quickly stepped forward.

"Daniel, he's nine. He doesn't understand what he's saying.""

Noah clutched the tablet.

"I do understand.""

"Sweetheart, remember what we talked about?""

He looked at her.

His voice was small but steady.

"You said I shouldn't tell Dad.""

Dad straightened.

"What did she say?""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"Nothing. He's confused.""

Noah tapped the screen.

"I have the video.""

Dad took the tablet.

"Let's see it.""

Vanessa suddenly reached for his arm.

"Daniel, please. This isn't necessary.""

He looked at her.

"If the video proves Tiana didn't do it, then we need to see it.""

Kayla shifted on the couch.

"Mom, my wrist hurts.""

Vanessa glanced at her daughter.

"Just a minute, baby.""

Dad pressed play.

The kitchen appeared.

The camera was tilted slightly, but the image was clear.

He watched Kayla walk toward me.

He watched her grab my wrist.

He watched her release me.

Then he watched her deliberately throw herself backward.

Dad's mouth tightened.

The chair crashed.

Kayla screamed.

Then Vanessa appeared.

Her voice filled the living room.

"Did you just push my daughter?""

I watched Dad's face.

His expression changed with every second.

Then came the slap.

His hand tightened around the tablet.

The recording continued.

Vanessa ordered me to leave.

She accused me of attacking Kayla.

Then the camera captured her leaning toward her daughter.

"Good. Now we just need your father to believe that she's dangerous.""

Dad stopped breathing for a moment.

The video continued.

Kayla laughed softly.

"Do you think he'll kick her out?""

Vanessa answered without hesitation.

"He will if we make him understand how much trouble she causes.""

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Kayla.

Dad slowly looked up.

"Vanessa.""

She immediately started crying.

"Daniel, you don't understand.""

"What exactly am I supposed to misunderstand?""

"Kayla was upset. She was frightened. I was trying to protect her.""

"Protect her from what?""

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

"From Tiana.""

Dad stood.

"She didn't touch her.""

"She has bullied Kayla for years!""

"That's not what I just watched.""

Vanessa pointed at Noah.

"He shouldn't have been recording us! That's an invasion of privacy!""

Dad's voice rose.

"He's nine years old! Why was he afraid to tell me what happened in my own house?""

Vanessa looked toward Noah.

"Because he's been influenced by Tiana.""

Noah stepped behind Dad.

"I saw Kayla fall, Daddy.""

Dad placed a hand on his shoulder.

"I know, buddy.""

Then he turned toward Kayla.

"Take the bandage off.""

Kayla blinked.

"What?""

"I want to see your wrist.""

Vanessa immediately intervened.

"She needs to rest.""

"I asked Kayla.""

The girl slowly unwound the bandage.

There was no swelling.

No visible bruise.

Nothing.

Dad stared at her.

"Does your wrist hurt?""

Kayla looked at her mother.

Vanessa gave her a tiny shake of the head.

I saw it.

Dad saw it too.

"Kayla, look at me.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I...""

"Did Tiana push you?""

Vanessa suddenly interrupted.

"Daniel, don't interrogate her!""

He turned sharply.

"I'm asking my daughter a question.""

Kayla's lips trembled.

Then she whispered, "No.""

The word was barely audible.

But it changed everything.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

"Get out of my way.""

Vanessa's tears stopped.

"What?""

"I need to speak with my children.""

She stared at him as if he had betrayed her.

"Your children?""

Dad didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

And for the first time that evening, I saw genuine regret in his eyes.

"Tiana, your cheek...""

I touched the red mark.

"It's fine.""

"No, it isn't.""

He looked down at the tablet again.

Then at Vanessa.

"You hit her?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

No sound came out.

Dad's expression hardened.

"Did you slap my daughter?""

"She was being disrespectful!""

"That wasn't my question.""

"Daniel, she provoked me!""

He stepped backward.

"Everyone go to their rooms. Now.""

Kayla rushed upstairs.

Noah followed, but before disappearing, he looked back at me.

I gave him a small nod.

Vanessa remained standing in the living room.

Her hands were trembling.

Then she leaned toward Dad.

"You think this is over?""

Dad looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

She smiled without warmth.

"You've only seen what they wanted you to see.""

And then she walked upstairs.

I stood beside the couch, feeling as if the entire house had shifted beneath my feet.

Dad turned toward me.

"Tiana, I'm sorry.""

I wanted to say something.

Anything.

But the words wouldn't come.

He reached toward my cheek, then stopped.

"I should have listened to you.""

I looked at him.

"Yes. You should have.""

His eyes dropped.

Then Noah came running back down.

"Dad!""

Dad turned.

"What is it, buddy?""

Noah held up the tablet.

"There's another video.""

My heart began racing.

"What video?"" Dad asked.

Noah swallowed.

"The one from last night.""

Vanessa had been upstairs for nearly an hour.

But now, from the hallway, I heard her bedroom door slam.

May you like

Noah lowered his voice.

"I think you need to hear what Mom said about Tiana before she made Kayla fall.""
