Chapter 8: The Woman Who Thought She Had Won

“Daniel notarized my father's documents?””

I couldn't keep the disbelief out of my voice.

Laura shook her head.

“Not exactly. Daniel didn't perform the notarization. He delivered the documents to the notary's office.””

Dad paced across his office.

“Why would he do that?””

Laura opened her laptop.

“That's what we need to establish. The notary says Daniel claimed to be acting on behalf of the Carter family.””

Dad stopped.

“He was never authorized to represent me.””

“Then we need to know who instructed him.””

I looked at the paperwork.

“Vanessa.””

Laura nodded.

“That's the likely connection, but we need Daniel to confirm it.””

Dad reached for his phone.

“I'll call him.””

Laura raised a hand.

“Let me contact him first.””

She made the call.

Daniel answered after several rings.

Laura explained that additional documents had been discovered and asked whether he would agree to another recorded interview.

He hesitated.

Then he agreed.

We met him at Laura's office two hours later.

This time, Daniel looked even more nervous.

He carried a small backpack and kept glancing toward the glass entrance.

Laura placed the property authorization on the table.

“Daniel, have you seen this document before?””

He studied it.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.””

Dad leaned forward.

“You delivered this to the notary?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Vanessa asked me to.””

Dad's voice became sharp.

“What did she tell you?””

“She said you had already signed everything and just needed the document notarized.””

“Did you see me sign it?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Did you ask?””

“No.””

Dad stood.

“You carried a legal document to a notary claiming to represent me when you knew I hadn't authorized you?””

Daniel flinched.

“I didn't understand what it was.””

“You didn't understand that you were pretending to act on my behalf?””

Daniel looked down.

“I was paid to deliver documents. That's all.””

Laura interrupted.

“How much were you paid?””

“Five hundred dollars.””

“By whom?””

“Vanessa.””

Laura made a note.

“Did she explain why the document needed to be notarized?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She said she needed to make sure the house couldn't be transferred without her knowledge.””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“That's not what the document says.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I know that now.””

Laura leaned forward.

“Daniel, did Vanessa ever tell you she intended to change the ownership of the property?””

He nodded.

“She said Richard was going to give her a share of the house eventually.””

Dad shook his head.

“I never agreed to that.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She said you were planning to put her on the deed after your retirement.””

“That's a lie.””

“I understand that now.””

Laura showed him the property transfer filing.

“Did you deliver this document too?””

Daniel studied it.

“No.””

“Did you know it existed?””

He shook his head.

“Not until today.””

Laura moved to another document.

It was the insurance beneficiary change.

Daniel's face changed.

He stared at it for several seconds.

Then he looked at Dad.

“Vanessa told me something about this.””

Dad went completely still.

“What?””

“She said she was making sure she would be protected if something happened to you.””

I felt my heart pound.

“Protected how?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She said she had helped you build your business and deserved to be taken care of.””

Dad's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Did she ever talk about me dying?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“She once said that if you were no longer around, things would finally become easier.””

Silence filled the room.

I felt sick.

Laura immediately asked Daniel to explain exactly when and where he had heard that statement.

He gave her a date.

It was the same week Vanessa had installed the hidden camera.

Dad sat down slowly.

“Did she say anything about how that would happen?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. I thought she was just being bitter.””

Laura wrote everything down.

Then she asked another question.

“Why did you keep the recordings?””

Daniel opened his backpack.

He removed an old phone.

“Because Vanessa started threatening me.””

He placed it on the table.

“She told me I had to delete every message and every photograph. She said if Richard ever discovered what we had been doing, she would make sure I took the blame.””

Dad stared at him.

“And you kept working with her?””

Daniel nodded.

“Until the pool incident.””

“What changed?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I watched the footage afterward. Vanessa sent me a clip.””

I frowned.

“Why would she send you that?””

“She wanted me to tell her whether the camera angle showed the push clearly.””

Laura leaned forward.

“Did you respond?””

Daniel nodded.

“I told her the footage was clear.””

“And what did she say?””

Daniel unlocked his phone.

He found the conversation.

Then he turned the screen toward Laura.

The message was short.

*If Richard sees the whole recording, I'll tell him Daniel arranged everything. He was the one who installed the camera and manipulated Emily into making the accusation.*

I stared at the screen.

“She was going to blame him?””

Daniel nodded.

“She said she'd make it look like I had planned the whole thing.””

Dad shook his head.

“You were both working against my daughter.””

“I know.””

“And now you want us to believe you?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“No. I want you to have the evidence.””

He opened another folder on his phone.

Inside were photographs, voice recordings, payment receipts, and messages.

One recording was particularly disturbing.

Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.

“Once Emily is gone, Richard will be easier to manage. He's emotional when it comes to his daughter. That's his weakness.””

A man's voice answered.

“What if he refuses to sign?””

Vanessa laughed.

“Then I'll make sure he has no choice.””

Dad's face went pale.

Laura paused the recording.

“Who is the other man?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know. Vanessa never introduced us properly.””

I looked at the screen.

The man sounded older than Daniel.

His voice was calm, almost businesslike.

Laura saved the recording.

Then she asked Daniel to provide the original phone and all related evidence through the proper process.

He agreed.

The meeting ended shortly afterward.

Dad didn't speak during the drive home.

When we arrived, he went straight to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water.

I sat at the table.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“I don't know who I married.””

I reached for his hand.

“She's not the woman she pretended to be.””

He nodded slowly.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

Dad answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice spoke.

“Mr. Carter? My name is Patricia Moore. I'm the notary who handled the property authorization paperwork.””

Dad looked at Laura's business card on the table.

“Why are you calling?””

“I need to tell you something.””

His expression tightened.

“Go ahead.””

There was a pause.

“Someone came to my office this morning asking me to change the date on the notarization record.””

Dad stood.

“Who?””

“Vanessa Carter.””

My stomach dropped.

Patricia continued.

“She told me the original paperwork had been entered incorrectly and asked me to issue a corrected certificate.””

Dad looked at me.

“Did you do it?””

“No. I refused. But she became very upset.””

“Did she threaten you?””

The woman hesitated.

“She told me she knew where my children went to school.””

Dad's expression changed completely.

Laura, who had remained on the line through the speaker, immediately took over.

She asked Patricia to preserve all communications and report the threat.

Then she arranged for a formal statement.

After the call ended, Dad looked at me.

“She knows we're investigating.””

I nodded.

“She must have heard about the bank.””

He looked toward the front windows.

“Then we need to be careful.””

But Vanessa wasn't finished.

At 8:15 that evening, a car stopped outside our gate.

The driver got out and approached the front entrance.

Dad checked the security camera.

It was Vanessa.

She stood beneath the porch light, holding a large envelope.

Dad didn't open the door.

He spoke through the intercom.

“What do you want?””

“I need to speak with you.””

“We have nothing to discuss.””

“Richard, please. Just five minutes.””

“No.””

She held up the envelope.

“I have something you need to see.””

Dad hesitated.

“What?””

“Your daughter's medical records.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Dad looked at me.

Vanessa continued.

“I'm trying to protect you, Richard. You don't know what Emily has been hiding.””

Dad pressed the intercom.

“Leave.””

Vanessa stepped closer to the camera.

“Then don't say I didn't warn you.””

She placed the envelope on the doorstep and walked away.

Dad waited until her car disappeared before retrieving it.

Inside was a stack of printed documents.

At the top was a psychological assessment bearing my name.

I stared at it.

“I've never seen this before.””

Dad flipped through the pages.

The document claimed I had been evaluated for emotional instability several months earlier.

It included fabricated descriptions of violent behavior, severe mood swings, and an alleged history of threatening family members.

There was even a signature from a medical professional.

Laura arrived shortly afterward.

She examined the papers.

“This needs to be verified immediately.””

I felt tears building.

“She made up a medical report?””

Laura nodded.

“That's what it appears to be, but we need confirmation from the named provider.””

Dad was furious.

“She's trying to make my daughter look mentally unfit.””

Laura studied the final page.

Then she noticed something.

“Emily, have you ever visited this clinic?””

“No.””

“Have you ever met Dr. Helen Morris?””

“No.””

Laura looked at Dad.

“This document may have been created using someone else's medical credentials.””

She took photographs and arranged for verification.

Then she turned back to me.

“Don't panic. If it's fabricated, that fact can become important evidence.””

I wanted to believe her.

But Vanessa had already crossed a line I hadn't imagined.

She had blamed me for my own assault.

She had tried to take our home.

She had altered financial documents.

And now she was trying to destroy my credibility with a medical report.

At 10:03 p.m., Laura received an email from the clinic.

She read it silently.

Then she looked up.

“Emily, the clinic has confirmed something.””

I held my breath.

“They have never treated you. But someone used your personal information to create a patient file.””

Dad stepped closer.

“Who?””

Laura turned her laptop toward us.

The account had been created using an email address registered to Vanessa.

But the most disturbing detail wasn't the email.

It was the attached photograph.

The image showed a prescription form bearing my name.

And the date on it was from three months earlier.

Dad stared at the screen.

“That's impossible.””

Laura enlarged the image.

At the bottom was a signature.

Not mine.

Not Vanessa's.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone whose name Dad recognized immediately.

May you like

He whispered:

“That's my family doctor.””
