Chapter 3: The Witness Who Wasn't Supposed to Exist

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

“Witnesses?”” I finally repeated.

“Yes,” Laura Bennett replied.

“That's what she told me.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“Who?””

“She hasn't provided names yet. But she claims someone saw the argument before you fell into the pool.””

I gripped my phone.

“That isn't possible. Dad and I were the only people outside.””

Laura paused.

“Then we need to preserve the original recording and avoid discussing the incident publicly.””

“Are you Dad's lawyer?””

“No. Your father contacted me after your stepmother called my office. I represent him in a separate business matter, but he asked me to advise you on protecting the evidence.””

I swallowed.

“Can she really accuse me of assault?””

“Anyone can make an allegation. Proving it is another matter. The recording will be important, especially if we can establish that it hasn't been altered.””

I looked at Buddy.

He was lying beside my bed, his golden head resting on his paws.

“She also blamed my dog,” I said.

Laura's voice softened.

“I know. Your father told me.””

After the call ended, I sat in silence.

I had thought the hardest part was surviving the pool.

I was wrong.

Vanessa wasn't satisfied with hurting me.

She wanted to make sure nobody believed me.

Downstairs, Dad was still in his office.

I went to him.

He looked up as soon as I entered.

“What's wrong?””

I told him about the phone call.

His expression darkened.

“She contacted Laura?””

“She says Vanessa has witnesses.””

Dad leaned back.

“That's ridiculous.””

“Could someone have been there?””

He rubbed his chin.

“Not that I know of.””

I sat across from him.

“Dad, what if she tells people I attacked her?””

“She can tell them whatever she wants. We have the footage.””

“But what if she finds a way to make it disappear?””

Dad looked at the computer.

“Then we'll make copies.””

He opened the security application and began exporting the recording.

He saved the original file to an external drive.

Then he copied it to a second drive.

He also contacted the security company to request confirmation of the camera's recording history and system integrity.

“Nothing gets deleted,” he said.

I watched him work.

For years, I had thought of Dad as someone who avoided confrontation.

Now I saw something different.

He wasn't trying to keep Vanessa happy anymore.

He was protecting me.

At around eight thirty, someone rang the doorbell.

Dad looked at the clock.

“Who could that be?””

He went downstairs.

I followed at a distance.

When he opened the door, Vanessa stood on the porch with two suitcases.

Her makeup was perfect again.

She had changed into a black dress and was holding her phone.

“I need to speak to you,” she said.

Dad remained in the doorway.

“We have nothing to discuss tonight.””

“Richard, please.””

“No.””

She looked past him and spotted me.

“Emily, could you give us a moment?””

I didn't move.

Dad stepped aside, keeping himself between us.

“She stays.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Fine. Then I'll say it in front of her.””

She placed her suitcase on the floor.

“I spoke to my attorney. You're making a serious mistake by treating an argument like a criminal act.””

Dad folded his arms.

“You pushed my daughter into the pool.””

“I have already explained what happened.””

“You admitted you were angry.””

“I said I was upset!””

“And the video shows you pushing her.””

Vanessa's lips tightened.

“Video can be misleading.””

“Not this one.””

She looked at me.

“Emily, tell your father what you said to me before you fell.””

I stared at her.

“I told you to let go of my wrist.””

“You threatened me.””

“No, I didn't.””

“You said I had no right to be in this house.””

I shook my head.

“That isn't what happened.””

Vanessa turned toward Dad.

“See? She twists everything.””

Dad's patience was visibly disappearing.

“Leave.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Richard, if you force me out tonight, I will make sure everyone knows what kind of daughter you've raised.””

Dad opened the door wider.

“Then I suggest you tell them the truth.””

She picked up her suitcase.

Before stepping outside, she leaned toward me.

“You should have stayed in the water.””

The words were quiet.

But Dad heard them.

His face changed instantly.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa straightened.

“Nothing.””

“I heard you.””

She shook her head.

“You're imagining things.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Get off my property.””

She walked down the steps.

Then she turned around.

“One more thing, Richard.””

He said nothing.

“You might want to check your security system again.””

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa gave him a thin smile.

“Not every camera works the way you think it does.””

Then she walked to her car.

Dad watched until her taillights disappeared.

I stood beside him.

“What was she talking about?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

But I noticed he looked toward the backyard.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the camera had captured more than we realized.

The next morning, Dad and I met Laura Bennett at her office.

It was a modern building downtown, with glass walls and a reception area that smelled faintly of coffee.

Laura was in her early forties, with dark hair pulled into a neat bun and a calm expression that made her difficult to intimidate.

She listened carefully while Dad explained what had happened.

Then she examined the original recording.

She watched it once without speaking.

Then she replayed the section where Vanessa pushed me.

Finally, she removed her glasses.

“This is very clear.””

Dad nodded.

“That's what I thought.””

Laura turned to me.

“Emily, did you receive medical attention?””

“I didn't go to the hospital.””

Her eyebrows lifted.

“You should consider getting checked, especially after swallowing pool water and experiencing breathing difficulties. We should also document any bruising or injuries.””

I nodded.

She made a note.

Then she opened a folder.

“Your stepmother has made a preliminary allegation that Emily physically attacked her during the argument.””

Dad leaned forward.

“That's absurd.””

“I agree that the recording you've provided contradicts her version. But we need to understand what she's planning to present.””

Laura placed a printed document on the table.

It was a message Vanessa had sent to her office.

The message claimed that a household employee had witnessed the argument.

I frowned.

“Household employee?””

Dad looked equally confused.

“We don't have household staff.””

Laura pointed to the name.

“According to Vanessa, a man named Daniel Brooks was working in the garden that afternoon.””

I stared at the paper.

Daniel Brooks.

The name meant nothing to me.

But Dad suddenly looked uncomfortable.

“Daniel?””

Laura noticed.

“Do you know him?””

Dad hesitated.

“He used to maintain the property.””

“When?””

“Several months ago.””

“Why did he leave?””

Dad looked down at the table.

“He was dismissed.””

“By whom?””

Dad didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, “Vanessa.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“She told me he had been stealing money and equipment.””

Laura closed the folder.

“Did you ever verify that accusation?””

Dad's silence answered the question.

My stomach tightened.

Laura leaned back.

“If this man is being presented as a witness, we need to establish whether he was actually present, what he saw, and whether he has any reason to support Vanessa's account.””

Dad nodded.

“I'll find him.””

Laura raised one finger.

“Don't contact him directly yet. Let me handle that.””

She looked at the recording again.

“There's something else I want to examine.””

She enlarged the video around the time Vanessa pushed me.

“What is this?””

On the screen, near the far end of the patio, something small and dark appeared beside the outdoor kitchen.

It looked like a second camera.

Dad leaned forward.

“That can't be right.””

“Why?”” I asked.

Dad stared at the screen.

“Because I only installed one camera facing the pool.””

Laura zoomed in further.

The object was partially hidden behind a decorative wooden panel.

It appeared to have a small lens.

I looked at Dad.

“Is that another security camera?””

“I don't know.””

He stood immediately.

“Let's go home.””

We returned to the house shortly before noon.

Dad went straight to the backyard.

He walked behind the outdoor kitchen and examined the wooden panel.

Then he crouched.

A small black device was attached to the underside of the wooden frame.

It wasn't part of his security system.

It was a compact wireless camera.

Dad carefully removed it.

“Who installed this?””

I stared at the device.

“Could Vanessa have put it there?””

He didn't answer.

Instead, he turned it over.

There was a tiny memory card inside.

Laura had told us not to tamper with potential evidence, so Dad placed the entire device in a clear plastic container and called her.

She arrived less than an hour later.

After documenting its location, she arranged for the device to be examined.

By late afternoon, we had an answer.

The camera had been operating for several weeks.

It had recorded the backyard from a different angle.

And unlike Dad's security camera, it was positioned to capture the area directly beside the swimming pool.

Laura looked at the footage on her laptop.

“There's something you both need to see.””

She pressed play.

The first recording showed Vanessa entering the backyard alone.

She looked around before kneeling beside the wooden panel.

Then she reached into her handbag and adjusted the camera.

My mouth went dry.

She had installed it herself.

The next clip showed her standing beside the pool, practicing something.

She stepped backward.

Then forward.

She looked toward the house.

And spoke to someone on her phone.

The audio was faint, but clear enough.

“I'm telling you, I can't keep living with her here.””

A man's voice answered.

I couldn't make out the words.

Vanessa continued.

“Richard always takes her side. If something happened, he'd finally understand how much of a problem she is.””

Dad froze.

Laura paused the recording.

Nobody spoke.

I felt my fingers turn cold.

“Play the next one,” Dad said.

Laura did.

The recording showed Vanessa sitting alone beside the pool on the previous evening.

She was speaking on the phone again.

This time, her voice was clearer.

“If Emily gets hurt, nobody will believe she didn't do it to herself.””

I stared at the screen.

Dad's face had gone completely white.

Then Laura stopped the video and looked at us.

“There's one more recording.””

She opened the file.

The timestamp showed it had been recorded two nights before the incident.

Vanessa was standing near the pool, talking to the same man.

This time, the man's face was visible.

I recognized him immediately.

So did my father.

It was Daniel Brooks, the former property manager.

And when Daniel spoke, he said something that made Dad grip the edge of the desk.

“Vanessa, you promised me this would only be about getting Emily out of the house. You never said you were going to hurt her.””
