Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Too Much

“Vanessa, you promised me this would only be about getting Emily out of the house. You never said you were going to hurt her.””
Daniel Brooks's voice played through Laura Bennett's laptop.
Nobody moved.
My father stood behind the desk, one hand gripping its wooden edge so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
Laura replayed the sentence.
Then she paused the recording.
“Richard,” she said carefully, “do you know what this means?””
Dad didn't answer immediately.
He stared at Daniel's face on the screen.
“I hired that man to maintain my property for almost four years. He had access to the garage, the garden, the pool equipment. I trusted him.””
I looked at the screen.
“And Vanessa knew him.””
Dad nodded slowly.
“She was the one who told me to fire him.””
Laura folded her hands.
“Why?””
Dad exhaled.
“She claimed he had been taking money from the household maintenance budget. She said she found irregularities in his invoices and suspected he was stealing equipment.””
“Did you investigate?”” Laura asked.
“I asked him about it. He denied everything. Vanessa showed me several invoices that didn't add up.””
“And you dismissed him?””
Dad lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
Laura made a note.
“Did you ever recover the supposedly missing money?””
“No.””
“Did you report the theft?””
“No.””
“Did you contact the companies listed on those invoices?””
Dad shook his head.
Laura closed her notebook.
“Then we shouldn't assume he stole anything. We need to find out why Vanessa wanted him gone, why they were secretly communicating, and what he meant by getting Emily out of the house.””
I felt sick.
“Was she planning to push me all along?””
Laura looked at me.
“We don't know yet. But the recordings suggest this was more than an impulsive argument.””
Dad turned toward me.
“Emily, I swear I had no idea.””
I nodded, although I didn't know what to say.
The woman who had pushed me into the pool had apparently been discussing my removal with a man my father once trusted.
And now that man was accusing her of going too far.
Laura carefully copied the recordings and arranged for the original device to be preserved.
She also asked us not to contact Vanessa or Daniel ourselves.
“Let them talk,” she said.
“People often reveal more when they think nobody knows what they've done.””
On the drive home, Dad barely spoke.
He kept both hands on the steering wheel.
Finally, I asked, “Do you think Vanessa wanted me out of the house because of Mom's things?””
Dad glanced at me.
“Maybe.””
“She hated seeing me there.””
He swallowed.
“I know.””
“Do you remember when she threw away Mom's recipe books?””
His expression tightened.
“I remember.””
“You told me she probably thought they were old.””
Dad looked straight ahead.
“I was wrong.””
I turned toward the passenger window.
There were so many memories I had spent years trying to reinterpret.
Vanessa complaining whenever I invited friends over.
Vanessa insisting that my mother's belongings should be stored in the attic.
Vanessa telling Dad that I was emotionally dependent on him.
Every time I tried to defend myself, she made it sound like I was jealous.
Now I wondered whether she had been preparing to remove me from our lives long before that afternoon.
When we arrived home, Dad went straight to the office.
I took Buddy outside.
He walked slowly beside me, occasionally stopping to sniff the grass.
I sat on the patio steps.
“I'm sorry you got blamed for everything, boy.””
Buddy placed his head on my knee.
I scratched behind his ears.
“You didn't do anything wrong.””
Then I heard a phone ringing inside.
Dad answered.
At first, his voice was calm.
Then it changed.
“What do you mean you received another message?””
A pause.
“Who sent it?””
Another pause.
“Send it to me.””
He hung up.
A minute later, he came outside holding his phone.
“Emily, I need you to see something.””
He showed me a message from an unknown number.
It was a photograph.
The picture showed the backyard from the hidden camera's angle.
Underneath it was a short sentence.
*Stop digging into things that don't concern you. You have no idea what your daughter is capable of.*
I looked at Dad.
“Who sent this?””
“I don't know.””
He called Laura immediately.
She told him to save the message, avoid responding, and forward the original to her.
Then she asked him to check whether anyone had accessed the house.
Dad checked the security records.
Nothing unusual appeared.
But when he opened the gate camera, he found something.
At 10:42 that morning, a dark sedan had stopped outside our property.
The driver hadn't gotten out.
He had simply sat there for nearly six minutes before driving away.
Dad enlarged the image.
The face was partially obscured by the windshield reflection.
But the license plate was visible.
He sent the recording to Laura.
Then he called the police non-emergency number to report the threatening message.
I sat quietly while he explained what had happened.
For the first time, this didn't feel like a family argument anymore.
It felt like something much bigger.
That evening, Laura called back.
She had managed to locate Daniel through an old employment record.
He was living about forty minutes away, working at an equipment rental company.
She had spoken with him briefly.
“He agreed to meet us tomorrow,” she said.
Dad nodded.
“Did he explain anything?””
“He said Vanessa approached him several months ago. He claims she offered him money to help create a situation that would make Emily appear unstable and unsuitable to remain in the house.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“What kind of situation?””
Laura hesitated.
“He wouldn't discuss the details over the phone.””
Dad's voice hardened.
“She wanted to make my daughter look crazy?””
“That's his allegation. We'll need to hear it directly and verify everything.””
I looked at the hidden camera sitting inside the evidence container on Dad's desk.
“Why would she record herself?””
Laura answered carefully.
“Possibly to document something she believed would support her version of events. Or perhaps she wanted leverage over someone. We need the complete recording history.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Can Daniel prove she paid him?””
“He says he has messages.””
I looked at my father.
“Then let's meet him.””
Laura agreed.
The next morning, we drove to a small coffee shop near Daniel's workplace.
Laura arrived first.
She had arranged for the conversation to be documented with Daniel's consent.
Dad and I sat at a table near the window.
At exactly ten fifteen, a man in his early fifties entered.
He wore a faded work jacket and carried a brown envelope.
His hair was thinning, and dark circles sat beneath his eyes.
He spotted us immediately.
For a moment, he looked as though he might turn around.
Then Laura stood.
“Daniel?””
He nodded.
“Ms. Bennett.””
He looked at Dad.
“Richard.””
Dad didn't offer his hand.
“Sit down.””
Daniel lowered himself into the chair.
His eyes briefly moved toward me.
“Emily. I'm sorry.””
I stared at him.
“You knew she was going to hurt me?””
He flinched.
“I knew she wanted you gone. I didn't know she'd push you into the pool.””
“Then why did you say that in the recording?””
Daniel opened the brown envelope.
“Because I had already told her I wasn't going to help anymore.””
He removed several printed messages and placed them on the table.
Laura examined them.
“Where did these come from?””
“My phone. I kept everything.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because I knew Vanessa would blame me if things went wrong.””
He took a breath.
“She approached me last winter. She said you were planning to give Emily ownership of part of the house.””
Dad frowned.
“I never told her that.””
“She said you had promised Emily the property eventually. She wanted to make sure that didn't happen.””
I stared at him.
Daniel continued.
“She offered me money to provide information about Emily's habits, her schedule, and the times she was home alone. At first, I thought it was just a family dispute.””
Dad's voice turned cold.
“And you agreed?””
Daniel lowered his head.
“Yes.””
I pushed my chair back slightly.
“You were watching me?””
“I was asked to report when you came and went. I told myself it was harmless.””
“Harmless?””
My voice cracked.
“You helped her monitor me in my own home.””
Daniel didn't argue.
“I know. I was wrong.””
Laura picked up one of the printed messages.
“Did Vanessa tell you what she intended to do?””
Daniel nodded.
“She wanted Emily to leave the property permanently. She said Richard would eventually sign whatever papers she put in front of him once Emily was no longer around to interfere.””
Dad stared at him.
“What papers?””
Daniel looked down.
“That's why I brought these.””
He slid a final document across the table.
It was a photograph of a handwritten note.
Vanessa's handwriting.
And at the bottom was a sentence that made my father stop breathing for a moment.
*Once Emily is out, Richard will have no reason to question the transfer.*
Dad looked up.
“What transfer?””
Daniel's eyes shifted toward me.
May you like
Then he said quietly:
“Your father doesn't know what Vanessa has been doing with his money, does he?””
