Chapter 2: The Footage Didn't Lie

Dad didn't shout.
That was what frightened Vanessa most.
He simply walked into his home office, placed his briefcase on the desk, and turned on the computer.
I followed him, wrapped in a thick towel from the bathroom.
Buddy stayed close to my side.
Vanessa came in behind us, her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor.
“Richard, I really think we should let Emily calm down first,” she said.
Dad didn't look at her.
“Sit down, Vanessa.””
She blinked.
“Excuse me?””
“I said sit down.””
His voice was quiet, but there was something in it I hadn't heard in years.
Authority.
Vanessa hesitated before lowering herself into the leather chair opposite his desk.
Dad opened the security application.
A grid of camera feeds appeared on the screen.
One showed the driveway.
Another showed the front entrance.
A third showed the garage.
And the fourth displayed the entire swimming pool.
Dad clicked on the recording history.
“Three thirty-eight,” he murmured.
Vanessa shifted in her chair.
“Richard, you're wasting time. We all know what happened.””
Dad looked at her.
“Then you won't mind watching.””
He opened the recording.
The video began with me sitting beside the pool, working on my laptop.
The image was clear.
Dad had paid for a high-resolution system after the garage incident, and the camera captured almost every movement in the backyard.
There I was, talking to Vanessa.
Then she stood.
The audio came through the computer speakers.
Her voice filled the room.
“Your father and I have been discussing the house.””
Dad's eyes remained fixed on the screen.
The argument continued.
I watched myself close the laptop and stand.
I watched Vanessa grab my wrist.
I watched myself pull away.
Then came the moment.
Vanessa stepped forward.
Both hands struck my back.
My body flew toward the water.
The recording showed everything.
There was no dog near me.
Buddy was still lying under the patio table.
Vanessa had pushed me.
Intentionally.
Dad's fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.
The recording continued.
I surfaced.
I reached for her.
She stood watching.
Then the audio captured my voice.
“Help me!””
Dad leaned closer to the screen.
The next few seconds were almost unbearable.
I watched myself struggle.
I watched Vanessa step backward.
I heard her say, “Maybe now you'll learn not to disrespect me.””
Then the video showed me dragging myself out of the pool.
And finally, it captured Vanessa pointing at Buddy.
“That dog knocked you in!””
Dad stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
The computer fan hummed softly.
I looked at my father.
His face had changed.
He looked older somehow.
“Richard,” Vanessa began.
He lifted his hand.
“Don't.””
She swallowed.
“You're taking this out of context.””
Dad turned toward her.
“What context?””
“She was disrespectful. She was screaming at me. I was trying to discipline her.””
“Discipline her?””
“She refuses to accept me as part of this family!””
Dad stood.
“So you pushed her into a swimming pool?””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“I didn't think she would fall like that!””
I stared at her.
“You pushed me with both hands.””
“I was angry!””
The words came out before she could stop herself.
Dad went completely still.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
She had just admitted it.
Dad walked around his desk.
“Are you telling me you deliberately pushed my daughter?””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No. That's not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
“She provoked me!””
Dad's voice finally rose.
“She was standing beside a swimming pool, Vanessa! What did you think would happen?””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“You're making me sound like a monster!””
“You lied about the dog.””
“I panicked!””
“You watched her struggle.””
“I was scared!””
Dad pointed toward the monitor.
“You were standing three feet away. You could have helped her. Instead, you stepped backward.””
Vanessa began crying.
Not the quiet, embarrassed kind of crying.
The loud, dramatic kind she used whenever she wanted Dad to comfort her.
“Richard, please. I've been trying so hard with Emily. You know how difficult she's been.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Even after being exposed, she was trying to make herself the victim.
Dad rubbed his forehead.
“Emily, go upstairs and get changed.””
I looked at him.
“Dad, I want you to know I didn't do anything to her.””
He turned immediately.
“I know, sweetheart.””
“She's going to say I started it.””
“I saw the video.””
I nodded, but my eyes filled again.
Dad stepped closer and gently touched my shoulder.
“Go get warm. I'll take care of this.””
Buddy followed me upstairs.
I changed into dry clothes and sat on the edge of my bed.
My hands still trembled.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Vanessa standing at the edge of the pool.
Watching.
Waiting.
I thought about the number of times I had defended her.
The number of times I had told Dad she was probably just having a bad day.
The number of times I had swallowed my anger because I didn't want him to feel caught between his wife and his daughter.
And I wondered how many times she had mistaken my silence for permission.
About twenty minutes later, Dad knocked.
“Can I come in?””
I wiped my face.
“Yeah.””
He entered and closed the door.
For a moment, he simply stood there.
Then he sat beside me.
“I'm sorry.””
I looked down.
“It's not your fault.””
“Yes, it is.””
“Dad…”
“I should have paid more attention.””
He stared at the floor.
“When Vanessa first started changing things around the house, I thought you were having trouble adjusting. I told myself you needed time.””
I didn't answer.
“I heard you complain about the way she treated you, and I kept asking you to be patient.””
His voice cracked.
“I should have listened.””
I leaned against his shoulder.
For the first time in years, he didn't try to explain Vanessa's behavior.
He didn't ask me to understand her.
He just held me.
After a while, I asked, “What are you going to do?””
Dad looked toward the closed bedroom door.
“Your stepmother is going to leave this house.””
My heart skipped.
“Tonight?””
“Tonight.””
I wanted to believe him.
But I knew Vanessa.
She wasn't someone who accepted losing control quietly.
And downstairs, she was already making phone calls.
A little later, Dad went back to his office.
I remained upstairs with Buddy.
At around six, I heard raised voices.
Then the sound of something breaking.
I rushed to the landing.
Vanessa stood in the hallway holding her phone.
Dad was near the office door.
“You cannot throw me out!”” she shouted.
“I can ask you to leave while we figure this out.””
“This is my home!””
“It is my home, Vanessa.””
“I am your wife!””
“And she's my daughter!””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course. Your precious Emily. You always choose her.””
Dad shook his head.
“This isn't about choosing anyone. It's about what you did.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You have no idea what she tells people about me.””
“I have the footage.””
“You have one recording!””
“One recording that shows you pushing her into a pool.””
Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the stairs.
She saw me.
For a second, neither of us moved.
Then she pointed at me.
“You little liar. You wanted this all along.””
Dad immediately stepped between us.
“Don't speak to her.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You think she's innocent? She's been trying to get rid of me since the day we married!””
I held Buddy's collar.
“I never tried to get rid of you. I just wanted you to stop treating me like I didn't belong here.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“You never belonged in my marriage.””
Dad's expression hardened.
“That's enough.””
He walked toward the front door and opened it.
“Get your things.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You're actually doing this?””
“Yes.””
She looked around the hallway as if she expected someone to appear and defend her.
Nobody did.
Then she turned back toward Dad.
“You'll regret this.””
He didn't answer.
She stormed upstairs, slamming the bedroom door.
I returned to my room.
For the first time that afternoon, I thought I might be able to sleep.
But at 7:12 p.m., my phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
I answered cautiously.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice spoke.
“Emily Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Laura Bennett. I'm a family attorney. Your stepmother has contacted my office.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does she want?””
There was a short pause.
“She says the recording is misleading. She also claims you attacked her first.””
I sat upright.
“What?””
“She intends to file a police report accusing you of assault.””
I stared at the wall.
May you like
Then Laura said something that made my blood run cold.
“There's another issue. Your stepmother says she has witnesses who can support her version of events.””
