Chapter 9: The Son Vanessa Hid From Everyone
Daniel Bell had spent fourteen years believing that his mother had abandoned him.
His earliest memories were of a small apartment above a pharmacy, a woman who called herself Aunt Vanessa, and a man named Arthur who visited every few months.
He had been told his mother was unstable.
He had been told his biological father had died.
He had been told that the Mitchell family was dangerous.
And most importantly, he had been told never to ask questions.
But three weeks earlier, everything had changed.
Daniel had found an old photograph inside a storage box.
It showed a woman holding a newborn baby.
On the back was a handwritten message.
*My beautiful boy. I hope one day I can tell you the truth. Love, Caroline.*
Daniel had searched the name.
Caroline Bell.
He had found a photograph of her online.
Then he had found another photograph.
One taken outside the Mitchell estate.
Standing beside her was a woman he recognized immediately.
Vanessa.
That was when he started investigating.
At 9:15 the next morning, Daniel entered the private clinic.
He wore a dark jacket and carried a brown envelope.
The receptionist greeted him.
"Good morning. How can I help you?""
"I have an appointment with Dr. Stevens.""
"Name?""
"Daniel Bell.""
She checked the computer.
"Please take a seat.""
Daniel sat near the window.
His phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa appeared.
*We need to talk. Don't go to the police.*
He stared at it.
Then another message arrived.
*You don't know what you're getting yourself into.*
Daniel switched off his phone.
A nurse called his name.
"Mr. Bell?""
He stood.
Inside the examination room, Dr. Stevens reviewed his paperwork.
"You requested a genetic identity test?""
"Yes.""
"Can you explain why?""
Daniel placed the old photograph on the desk.
"I think my birth records were changed.""
The doctor examined it.
"Do you have reason to believe your current records are inaccurate?""
"My mother told me I was adopted. But she never showed me any papers.""
"Who told you?""
"Vanessa Mitchell.""
The doctor looked up.
"Vanessa Mitchell?""
Daniel nodded.
"She raised me.""
Dr. Stevens studied the photograph again.
"Do you have any other documents?""
Daniel handed over the envelope.
Inside were copies of hospital records, old correspondence, and a letter from Arthur Bell.
The doctor read the first page.
Then she stopped.
"Mr. Bell, where did you get these?""
"From an old storage unit.""
Dr. Stevens closed the folder.
"I think you should speak with an attorney before proceeding.""
Daniel frowned.
"Why?""
"Because these documents suggest a complicated legal situation.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"I just want to know who my mother is.""
The doctor looked at him.
Then she nodded.
"All right. We'll arrange the test.""
At the Mitchell estate, Marcus was reviewing the hospital records when Helen entered.
"I've spoken to the clinic.""
Marcus looked up.
"And?""
"Daniel Bell requested a genetic test this morning.""
Evelyn sat forward.
"Does he know?""
"Apparently, he's questioning his identity.""
Marcus stood.
"Can we contact him?""
Helen shook her head.
"Not without knowing what Vanessa has told him.""
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
"Then I want to speak to Caroline.""
Evelyn frowned.
"Why?""
"Because she may be the only person who can tell us what happened after the babies left the hospital.""
Helen nodded.
"I'll arrange it.""
Caroline Bell arrived at the estate that afternoon.
She looked nervous.
Her hands trembled as she placed her handbag on the coffee table.
Marcus sat opposite her.
Evelyn remained beside him.
Helen took notes.
"Mrs. Bell," Marcus began, "I need you to tell me everything you know about Daniel.""
Caroline nodded.
"Arthur told me my baby died.""
"When?""
"Three days after the birth.""
Marcus frowned.
"Did you see the body?""
Caroline shook her head.
"No. Arthur said the hospital handled everything.""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Caroline continued.
"I was recovering from surgery. Arthur told me there had been complications. He said the hospital had made a mistake with the paperwork and that I shouldn't ask questions.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Did he ever tell you that your son was alive?""
Caroline looked down.
"Not until years later.""
"What happened?""
"Arthur showed me a photograph of a little boy. He said it was my son. But he told me the child was living with another family and that I couldn't contact him.""
"Why?""
"He said the Mitchell family would destroy me if I tried.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Why would you believe that?""
Caroline's eyes filled.
"Because I had nothing. Arthur controlled my finances. He told me that if I challenged him, he would make sure I never saw my child.""
Evelyn looked at her.
"Did you know about Laura?""
Caroline nodded.
"I knew Richard had been involved with another woman. Arthur told me Laura had given birth to Richard's son.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Did you ever meet Laura?""
"No.""
"Did Vanessa tell you anything about her?""
Caroline hesitated.
"Vanessa said Laura had stolen my baby.""
Marcus stared.
"What?""
"She told me that Laura had arranged the switch at the hospital. She said the Mitchell family knew the truth but wanted to keep the inheritance.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"That's a lie.""
Caroline wiped her eyes.
"I know that now.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Why did you hire Coleman?""
"Vanessa told me she had found the original records. She said a DNA test would prove Daniel belonged to me.""
"Did you see the test?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know it was actually Daniel's sample?""
Caroline looked confused.
"I don't understand.""
Helen placed a copy of the report on the table.
"This report was submitted under Daniel Bell's name, not Jordan Mitchell's.""
Caroline stared.
"Then why was I told it belonged to Jordan?""
Nobody answered.
Caroline slowly looked at Marcus.
"Vanessa said Jordan was my son.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Jordan is Laura's biological child.""
Caroline covered her mouth.
"Then Daniel...""
Evelyn nodded.
"Daniel is yours.""
Caroline began crying.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she looked at Marcus.
"Where is he?""
Marcus hesitated.
"We don't know yet.""
Caroline stood.
"I want to find my son.""
Daniel arrived at the Mitchell estate shortly before sunset.
He had received an email from Helen explaining that several documents relating to his birth had been located.
He didn't trust the invitation.
But he wanted answers.
When the front door opened, Marcus was standing there.
"Daniel?""
The young man nodded.
"Mr. Mitchell.""
"Please come inside.""
Daniel entered cautiously.
His eyes moved across the hallway.
He recognized the photographs.
One showed Richard Mitchell.
Another showed Laura holding a baby.
He stopped.
"That's her.""
Marcus turned.
"Who?""
"The woman in the hospital photograph.""
Marcus looked at the picture.
"Laura.""
Daniel studied her face.
"She looks like someone I saw in an old photograph.""
Marcus frowned.
"Where?""
"In the storage unit Vanessa used to keep.""
Marcus led him into the living room.
Evelyn stood when Daniel entered.
She stared at him for a long moment.
Then she whispered, "You have your father's eyes.""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Which father?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Helen placed several documents on the table.
"We need to explain something about your birth.""
Daniel sat down.
Marcus began carefully.
"Fourteen years ago, two boys were born at St. Mary's Hospital. You were one of them. The other was my son, Jordan.""
Daniel frowned.
"I know about Jordan.""
"Do you?""
"Vanessa told me he was the child who took my place.""
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
"That's not true.""
He explained the hospital records.
The identification bracelets.
The original corrections.
The threats made by Arthur.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
When Marcus finished, Daniel leaned back.
"So you're telling me I was never stolen from Caroline?""
"That's right.""
"And Jordan wasn't given to another family?""
"No.""
Daniel stared at the documents.
Then he looked up.
"Why would Vanessa lie?""
Evelyn answered.
"Because she believed she could use your identity to claim part of the Mitchell fortune.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"So I was just a way to get money?""
Nobody answered.
His eyes moved toward the photograph of Laura.
"Did she know about me?""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes. She knew there were two babies. She tried to protect both of you.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Did she hate me?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
"How do you know?""
"Because your mother never believed a child should pay for the decisions adults made.""
Daniel looked down.
For the first time, his expression softened.
Then the front door opened.
Vanessa walked into the living room.
She stopped when she saw Daniel.
"What are you doing here?""
Daniel stood.
"Getting answers.""
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
"Why is he here?""
Marcus remained seated.
"Because he deserves the truth.""
Vanessa dropped her purse.
"Daniel, come with me.""
He didn't move.
"Did you know Caroline was my mother?""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Of course.""
"Then why did you tell me she abandoned me?""
"Because she wasn't capable of raising you.""
"Why did you tell me my father was dead?""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Your father was Richard Mitchell.""
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then back at Vanessa.
"Is that true?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Yes.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Then why did you tell me Arthur was my father?""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
Marcus stood.
"What?""
Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a folded letter.
"Arthur wrote this to me when I was twelve.""
He handed it to Marcus.
The letter was dated four years earlier.
It contained a confession.
Arthur admitted that he had known Daniel was Caroline's biological son.
He also admitted that he had used Vanessa to obtain access to the Mitchell family trust.
But the final paragraph was something nobody expected.
Daniel, there is something you must understand. Richard Mitchell was not your biological father. I was.
Marcus stared at the letter.
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
Daniel looked at her.
"You told me Richard was my father.""
Vanessa backed away.
"Arthur was confused.""
Daniel continued.
"He said you would explain everything when I turned eighteen.""
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
His mother was trembling.
"Mom?""
Evelyn slowly shook her head.
"That can't be true.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed the letter.
"Give me that!""
Daniel pulled it away.
"Don't touch me!""
Marcus stepped between them.
"Enough!""
Vanessa pointed at Daniel.
"Arthur lied to you. He lied to everyone!""
Daniel's voice broke.
"Then why did you spend fourteen years telling me I was special? Why did you tell me I was going to inherit everything?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Because I was trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
She didn't answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Vanessa, did Arthur Bell believe Daniel was his biological son?""
Vanessa looked at him.
Then she whispered:
"Yes.""
Evelyn sat down heavily.
Marcus looked at the letter again.
If Arthur was Daniel's biological father, the entire story was different.
Caroline might be Daniel's mother.
But Richard might not be his father.
Which meant the inheritance claim was built on a lie.
And the person who had engineered that lie had been dead for four years.
Or so everyone believed.
That night, Helen called Marcus.
"I've checked the letter.""
"What did you find?""
"The paper and handwriting appear consistent with Arthur's known correspondence.""
Marcus sat up.
"Then it's real?""
"It may be. But we need independent genetic testing to establish the biological relationships.""
Marcus looked toward Jordan's bedroom.
"How soon?""
"The samples are being processed.""
He exhaled.
"Anything else?""
Helen hesitated.
"Yes. There's a problem with Vanessa's financial records.""
"What problem?""
"She received several payments from an account connected to Arthur Bell's estate after his death.""
Marcus frowned.
"How?""
"The account was supposed to be frozen. But someone continued making transfers.""
Marcus stood.
"Who authorized them?""
Helen paused.
Then she said:
"Your father.""
Marcus stared at the phone.
"Richard has been dead for eleven years.""
"I know.""
"Arthur has been dead for four.""
"I know.""
Helen lowered her voice.
"Someone has been using both of their identities to move money.""
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*You are looking in the wrong place, Marcus. Arthur isn't the only person who knew about the babies.*
Another message followed.
*Your mother knows who arranged the switch. Ask her why she never told you that the nurse wasn't working alone.*
Marcus slowly turned.
Evelyn was standing at the top of the stairs.
She had heard the message.
And she was holding a photograph Marcus had never seen before.
It showed Evelyn standing outside St. Mary's Hospital on the night Jordan and Daniel were born.
Beside her stood a man.
A man who looked exactly like Richard Mitchell.
But Richard had supposedly been hundreds of miles away that night.
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
"There's something I need to confess.""
Marcus stared at the photograph.
"Who is that man?""
Evelyn's lips trembled.
"Your father.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
Evelyn lowered the photograph.
"Richard wasn't supposed to be at the hospital that night.""
"Then why was he there?""
She took a long breath.
"Because he knew one of the babies wasn't his.""
Marcus stared at her.
May you like
Then Evelyn said the words that would change everything.
"And he came to make sure the right child went home.""
