Chapter 8: The DNA Report That Changed Everything
The courthouse was crowded the following morning.
Marcus arrived at 8:30 with Jordan, Evelyn, and Helen.
Vanessa was already there.
She wore a cream-colored suit, expensive heels, and a small diamond necklace Marcus had given her on their second wedding anniversary.
Beside her stood Richard Coleman.
Across the hallway sat Caroline Bell.
She was in her early fifties, with carefully styled blonde hair and a dark green coat.
She looked at Jordan.
Then she looked away.
Marcus noticed.
"That's Caroline?"" he whispered to Helen.
"Yes.""
"She doesn't even know him.""
"Not yet.""
Vanessa approached.
"Marcus.""
He didn't respond.
She looked at Jordan.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
Jordan moved closer to his father.
Vanessa smiled.
"Don't be afraid. Nobody wants to hurt you.""
Marcus stepped between them.
"Don't speak to him.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"You can't keep him from his real family.""
Marcus looked at her.
"He is with his real family.""
Coleman interrupted.
"Mr. Mitchell, let's keep this civil.""
Marcus turned.
"Tell your client to stop approaching my son.""
Coleman adjusted his briefcase.
"We'll discuss everything inside.""
Caroline stood.
She walked toward Jordan.
"Hello, Jordan.""
The boy stared at her.
"Do I know you?""
Caroline's expression softened.
"No, sweetheart. But I think we have a lot to talk about.""
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
"He's not ready to talk to you.""
Caroline looked at him.
"You don't get to decide that forever.""
Helen stepped between them.
"Mrs. Bell, please wait for the hearing.""
Caroline returned to her seat.
Jordan held his father's hand.
His palm was cold.
Inside the courtroom, Judge Eleanor Whitmore reviewed the emergency petition.
Coleman stood first.
"Your Honor, our client is seeking temporary protective custody while questions surrounding the child's biological identity are resolved.""
Marcus's attorney stood.
"Objection to the characterization of this petition. Mr. Mitchell has raised his son since birth. There is no evidence of neglect or abandonment.""
Coleman held up the DNA report.
"We have evidence that the child's recorded biological parentage may be inaccurate.""
Judge Whitmore examined the document.
"Who conducted this test?""
Coleman named a private laboratory.
"Was the sample independently collected?""
"Yes.""
Helen stood.
"Your Honor, we challenge the reliability of this report. The chain of custody is incomplete, and the laboratory has not provided the underlying sample records.""
Coleman frowned.
"The report is certified.""
"That does not establish that the sample belonged to Jordan Mitchell.""
The judge looked at both attorneys.
"I will not make a custody decision based solely on an unverified report.""
Vanessa leaned toward Coleman.
He whispered something to her.
She nodded.
Then he stood again.
"Your Honor, there is also the matter of the child's inheritance.""
Helen immediately objected.
"This is a custody hearing, not a probate trial.""
Judge Whitmore looked at Coleman.
"Explain the relevance.""
Coleman placed another document before the court.
"Mrs. Bell believes her biological son was improperly identified at birth, which may have affected his legal and financial interests.""
Judge Whitmore looked at Marcus.
"Mr. Mitchell, what is your response?""
Marcus stood.
"Jordan has been my son since the day he was born. I have raised him, cared for him, and loved him every day of his life. I will not allow anyone to use an old financial dispute to frighten him.""
Coleman interrupted.
"That is emotional, not factual.""
Marcus turned toward him.
"Then let's discuss facts.""
He handed Helen a folder.
She presented Patricia's sworn statement, the original hospital bracelets, and the recording of Arthur Bell.
The courtroom became quiet as the recording played.
Arthur's voice echoed through the room.
"The Mitchell fortune belongs to my son.""
Judge Whitmore leaned forward.
"Who is speaking?""
Helen answered.
"Arthur Bell, deceased. The recording was made by Patricia Moore, a former maternity nurse who was present during both births.""
Coleman stood.
"We object to the admission of this recording.""
"On what grounds?"" the judge asked.
"The speaker is deceased, and the circumstances surrounding the recording are unclear.""
Helen handed over Patricia's affidavit.
"The witness is available to testify.""
Judge Whitmore examined the document.
"Bring her forward.""
Patricia entered the courtroom.
She looked nervous but determined.
Helen asked her to explain what had happened at St. Mary's.
Patricia described the two births.
She described Arthur's threats.
She described the original identification bracelets and the subsequent alteration.
Then Helen asked the question that mattered.
"Did you ever restore the original identification of the babies?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Before the final discharge records were completed.""
"Which child was Laura Mitchell's biological son?""
Patricia looked at Jordan.
"Jordan.""
"And Caroline Bell's?""
"Daniel.""
Caroline suddenly stood.
"That's a lie!""
The judge struck the desk with her gavel.
"Mrs. Bell, sit down.""
Caroline slowly returned to her seat.
Patricia continued.
"I know what I did was wrong. I should have reported Arthur immediately. But I corrected the records, and I have kept the original evidence ever since.""
Coleman approached for cross-examination.
"Mrs. Moore, isn't it true that you received money from Evelyn Mitchell?""
Patricia shook her head.
"No.""
"Isn't it true that she asked you to change your statement?""
"No.""
"Did you ever receive money from Vanessa Mitchell?""
Patricia looked at Vanessa.
"Yes.""
Vanessa's head snapped up.
Patricia continued.
"She paid me to remain silent.""
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
Judge Whitmore struck the gavel again.
"Order!""
Coleman stepped back.
Vanessa leaned toward him, whispering urgently.
Marcus watched her face.
She was no longer confident.
But Coleman wasn't finished.
He returned to his table and produced a sealed document.
"Your Honor, we have additional evidence.""
Helen frowned.
"What is that?""
Coleman handed it to the clerk.
"A DNA report from a second laboratory.""
Judge Whitmore opened the envelope.
She read the first page.
Then the second.
Her expression changed.
Helen stood.
"We haven't been given a copy.""
Coleman smiled.
"It was received this morning.""
The judge looked at the report.
"According to this document, the child identified as Jordan Mitchell shares a biological relationship with Caroline Bell.""
Marcus stood.
"That's impossible.""
Caroline began crying.
"I knew it. I knew my son was alive.""
Jordan grabbed his father's hand.
Marcus looked at Helen.
She was already reviewing the report.
Then she noticed something.
"Your Honor, may I see the original?""
The judge handed it over.
Helen examined the laboratory stamp.
Then the sample identification number.
Her expression changed.
"Your Honor, this report is not for Jordan Mitchell.""
Coleman frowned.
"What?""
Helen turned the document around.
"The sample identification number belongs to another person.""
Coleman stepped forward.
"That's incorrect.""
Helen pointed to the code.
"This is not the identification number used for Jordan's collection.""
Judge Whitmore looked at the report again.
"Mr. Coleman, can you explain this discrepancy?""
Coleman hesitated.
Vanessa whispered something to him.
He ignored her.
"We would need time to verify the laboratory records.""
Helen nodded.
"Then the report should not be used as evidence today.""
The judge removed her glasses.
"Agreed.""
She looked toward Caroline.
"Mrs. Bell, your petition for temporary custody is denied pending further investigation.""
Caroline began sobbing.
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"This is ridiculous!""
The judge turned.
"Mrs. Mitchell, one more interruption and I will have you removed.""
Vanessa sat down.
Marcus put his arm around Jordan.
But the hearing wasn't over.
Judge Whitmore looked at Helen.
"Counsel, I want an independent DNA examination arranged. Both sides will have access to the testing process, and the results will be submitted directly to the court.""
Helen nodded.
"Understood, Your Honor.""
The judge continued.
"I also want the original hospital records preserved. Any evidence of tampering should be referred to the appropriate authorities.""
She struck the gavel.
The hearing was adjourned.
Outside the courtroom, Caroline approached Marcus.
"Please.""
Marcus stopped.
"What?""
She looked at Jordan.
"I just want to know whether he's my son.""
Marcus kept his hand on Jordan's shoulder.
"He isn't.""
Caroline's eyes filled.
"You don't know that.""
"Patricia testified. The original records are clear.""
Caroline looked at Evelyn.
"You knew all along?""
Evelyn nodded.
"I knew Laura's son was Jordan.""
Caroline's voice broke.
"Then where is Daniel?""
Nobody answered.
Caroline wiped her cheek.
"I haven't seen my boy in fourteen years. Arthur told me he died shortly after birth.""
Marcus stared.
"Daniel is alive?""
Caroline nodded.
"That's what Vanessa told me.""
Marcus turned sharply.
Vanessa was standing several feet away.
He walked toward her.
"You told Caroline her son died?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"I don't know what she's talking about.""
Caroline stepped forward.
"You told me the baby was lost. You said there had been a medical complication.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Caroline, you're confused.""
"No! You told me there was nothing I could do!""
Marcus looked between them.
"Where is Daniel?""
Vanessa backed away.
Coleman stepped forward.
"That's enough. My client will not answer further questions in a public hallway.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Then she can answer them under oath.""
That evening, Marcus sat in the study with Evelyn and Helen.
Jordan was upstairs with a tutor.
The independent DNA test had been scheduled for the following morning.
Helen placed a new document on the desk.
"I had the second report reviewed.""
"And?""
"It was submitted under a different name.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Whose?""
Helen looked at him.
"Daniel Bell.""
Evelyn frowned.
"Then Caroline's claim may be based on a real sample.""
Helen nodded.
"Possibly. But the report was deliberately presented as Jordan's.""
Marcus looked at the paper.
"Who collected Daniel's sample?""
"We're trying to establish that.""
Evelyn reached for her handbag.
"There's something else.""
She removed a photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing beside a young man outside a restaurant.
The man looked approximately twenty-five.
Marcus studied his face.
"Who is he?""
Evelyn turned the photograph over.
On the back was a handwritten name.
*Daniel Bell.*
Marcus stared.
"When was this taken?""
"Last month.""
Helen immediately reached for the photograph.
"Where did you get this?""
"From Patricia.""
Marcus looked at his mother.
"Patricia knew Daniel was alive?""
"She suspected it.""
Marcus examined the photograph again.
The young man wore a dark jacket and carried a folder.
Vanessa was smiling beside him.
They looked familiar with each other.
Comfortable.
Marcus felt a chill.
"She's been meeting him.""
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes.""
Helen studied the photograph.
"If Daniel is alive, we need to establish whether he knows his identity.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa's face.
Then at the young man.
"Maybe he does.""
His phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
*You should stop trying to prove who Jordan is. The real question is why Daniel Bell has been living under another name.*
Marcus stared at the message.
A second message arrived.
*Ask Vanessa what happened to the boy she raised.*
Marcus slowly looked up.
"She raised Daniel?""
Evelyn's face went pale.
Then Helen opened her laptop.
"I've just received an update from the independent investigator.""
"What?""
Helen turned the screen toward them.
It showed a photograph of Daniel Bell entering a private medical clinic.
The date was three days earlier.
Below the photograph was a short note.
*Subject has requested a copy of his original birth records.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
"He's investigating his own identity.""
May you like
Helen nodded.
"And he may already know more than Vanessa realizes.""
