Chapter 2: The Money His Mother Left Behind
Marcus held the document beneath the bedside lamp.
At first, he thought he was looking at an ordinary authorization form.
Then he read the heading.
*Minor Beneficiary Financial Management Authorization.*
Below it was Jordan's name, his date of birth, and a signature that appeared to belong to Marcus.
But Marcus hadn't signed it.
He read the document again.
Then a third time.
"Jordan, when did Vanessa give you this?""
"Last summer.""
"Did you understand what it meant?""
Jordan shook his head.
"She said I had to sign it so she could pay my school bills.""
Marcus ran a hand over his face.
"Did you see me sign it?""
"No.""
"Did you ever see me give her permission to use your money?""
"No, Dad.""
Marcus carefully placed the paper on the bed.
"Okay. You're not in trouble.""
Jordan looked at him with uncertainty.
"Are you sure?""
The question hurt more than Marcus expected.
"Of course I'm sure.""
Jordan stared at his hands.
"Vanessa said I was making things difficult. She said you were already stressed, and if I told you about the money, you might send me away.""
Marcus felt his throat tighten.
"She told you that?""
Jordan nodded.
"She said you didn't want another problem after Mom died.""
Marcus crouched in front of him.
"Listen to me. Your mother dying was not your fault. And you are not a problem.""
Jordan's eyes filled.
"She said you married her because you needed someone to take care of me.""
Marcus shook his head.
"I married her because I thought she loved both of us.""
He paused.
"Apparently, I was wrong.""
Jordan finally began to cry.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
He simply covered his face with both hands, as though he had been waiting three years for someone to give him permission.
Marcus pulled him into an embrace.
"I'm sorry, son.""
Jordan clutched his father's shirt.
"I didn't want to make you angry.""
"You could never make me angry by telling me the truth.""
They stayed like that for several minutes.
Then Marcus stood and called his accountant again.
"Daniel, I'm looking at a financial authorization with my forged signature. I need you to freeze every account Vanessa can access.""
"Mr. Mitchell, before I do that, I need to explain something.""
"What?""
"The trust has already been flagged.""
Marcus frowned.
"Flagged by whom?""
"Your mother.""
Marcus glanced toward the bedroom door.
"How long ago?""
"Almost eight months.""
"Why wasn't I informed?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Mrs. Mitchell submitted a formal objection to the notification. She claimed you had authorized her to handle all communications concerning the trust.""
Marcus felt a cold sensation travel down his spine.
"Did you accept that?""
"No. But the legal review was still ongoing.""
"Send me everything.""
"I'll prepare the records.""
Marcus ended the call.
Jordan was watching him.
"Is Grandma in trouble?""
"No, son. I don't think so.""
"She told me not to tell Vanessa about the notebook.""
Marcus frowned.
"When?""
"Last Christmas.""
"What else did she tell you?""
Jordan looked toward the door.
"She said that if Vanessa ever made me feel like I didn't belong here, I should remember that this house was built by people who loved me.""
Marcus stared at him.
Those words sounded exactly like something Evelyn would say.
He took a breath.
"Come on. Let's go downstairs.""
Jordan hesitated.
"Do I have to sit with Vanessa?""
"No.""
"Will she be angry?""
Marcus placed a hand on his shoulder.
"She can be as angry as she wants. You're staying with me.""
When they returned to the dining room, Vanessa had moved to the living room.
She stood beside the fireplace, speaking rapidly into her phone.
"No, you need to cancel the transfer. I don't care what the bank says. Just cancel it!""
She stopped when she saw Marcus.
Her eyes moved to Jordan.
"Get away from him.""
Marcus stepped between them.
"He's my son.""
Vanessa ended the call.
"You're acting like I've committed a crime.""
"Where is the money?""
She folded her arms.
"What money?""
"Jordan's trust.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're really going to interrogate me on Thanksgiving?""
"Yes.""
"After everything I've done for this family?""
Marcus placed the authorization document on the coffee table.
"Did you forge my signature?""
Vanessa glanced at it.
For one brief moment, her face lost color.
Then she recovered.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"That's your signature as witness.""
"Then I witnessed it.""
"You signed as witness to a document I never authorized.""
"Maybe you forgot.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"I don't forget signing legal documents involving my son.""
Vanessa walked toward the bar and poured herself another drink.
"You're exhausted. You're emotional. And your mother has clearly been filling your head with nonsense.""
At the mention of Evelyn, Marcus looked toward the dining room.
His mother was still sitting calmly at the table.
"Leave my mother out of this.""
"Why? She's been waiting for an opportunity to turn you against me since the day we married.""
Evelyn entered the living room.
She carried the thick envelope Marcus had noticed earlier.
"That's not entirely true," she said.
Vanessa's grip tightened around her glass.
"Nobody asked you.""
Evelyn placed the envelope on the coffee table.
"I believe your husband has some questions about the money.""
Vanessa stared at the envelope.
"Where did you get that?""
"From my attorney.""
"Give it to me.""
Evelyn didn't move.
"No.""
Vanessa placed her glass down.
"You have no right to interfere in my marriage.""
Evelyn tilted her head.
"Your marriage is not the issue. My grandson's inheritance is.""
Marcus looked at his mother.
"Mom, what do you know?""
Evelyn opened the envelope.
Inside were bank statements, printed emails, copies of trust documents, and several photographs.
"I know that Jordan's inheritance was never supposed to be under Vanessa's control.""
Marcus took the first document.
It showed an account balance from three years earlier.
$1,250,000.
He turned to the next page.
The balance was significantly lower.
Then the next.
And the next.
His eyes moved rapidly across the transactions.
"These transfers...""
"Yes," Evelyn said.
Marcus looked up.
"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars to an account in Delaware?""
Vanessa interrupted.
"That was for household expenses.""
"Another eighty thousand to a company called Vantage Holdings?""
"Investments.""
"Forty-five thousand to a luxury car dealership?""
Vanessa's lips tightened.
"That car was necessary.""
Marcus looked at her.
"You bought yourself a car with my son's inheritance?""
"I manage this household!""
"With his money?""
Vanessa threw up her hands.
"You never cared about any of this until your mother started interfering!""
Evelyn calmly removed another sheet from the envelope.
"There's more.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Stop.""
Evelyn ignored her.
"Marcus, look at the date on this document.""
He examined it.
It was dated six months before his wedding to Vanessa.
His eyebrows drew together.
"Why was this signed before we got married?""
Evelyn looked at him.
"Because Laura knew something was wrong.""
Marcus went completely still.
"Don't bring Laura into this.""
"She asked me to investigate certain financial irregularities before she died.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That doesn't make sense.""
Evelyn opened another folder.
"Laura noticed withdrawals from Jordan's preliminary trust account shortly before her death. She contacted me because she was afraid someone had access to information they shouldn't have had.""
Marcus looked down at the papers.
"Who?""
Evelyn glanced at Vanessa.
Vanessa took a step backward.
"She's lying.""
Evelyn didn't raise her voice.
"Laura believed someone close to the family was watching the inheritance.""
Marcus looked at his wife.
"Did you know Laura?""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Of course I knew Laura. We met at charity events.""
"Did you ever speak to her privately?""
"No.""
Evelyn slid a photograph across the table.
It showed Laura standing outside a restaurant with a woman whose face was partially turned toward the camera.
Marcus leaned closer.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"That's you.""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Marcus picked up the photograph.
"Why were you meeting my first wife six months before you and I met?""
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
"I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
She swallowed.
"It was a coincidence.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"Laura kept records of every meeting.""
Marcus looked at his mother.
"How many times?""
"Four.""
"Four?""
Evelyn nodded.
"Four private meetings. And one phone call the day before Laura died.""
The room became unbearably quiet.
Jordan stood close to his father, listening.
Marcus looked as though the ground beneath him had shifted.
"Mom, what did Laura tell you?""
Evelyn took a long breath.
"She told me that she had discovered something about Vanessa.""
Vanessa suddenly reached for the envelope.
Marcus caught her wrist.
"Don't touch it.""
She pulled away.
"You don't understand what you're doing!""
"Then help me understand.""
Vanessa looked at Jordan.
For the first time, she seemed to realize that the boy was listening to every word.
"Can we discuss this privately?""
"No.""
"Marcus, please.""
"No more secrets.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
But Marcus had seen her cry before.
He remembered the tears she had shed when he proposed. The tears at their wedding. The tears when she claimed she was overwhelmed by the responsibility of becoming a stepmother.
He wondered how many of them had been real.
Evelyn placed a final document on the table.
"This is the letter Laura left for Jordan.""
Marcus stared at the envelope.
His first wife's handwriting was visible across the front.
*For my son. Only when he is old enough to understand.*
Marcus gently picked it up.
"Why didn't you give this to me?""
"Because Laura instructed me not to.""
"Why?""
Evelyn looked at Jordan.
"Because she believed that if certain people knew what she had discovered, Jordan might be in danger.""
Marcus slowly turned toward his mother.
"Who was she afraid of?""
Evelyn's eyes moved to Vanessa.
"That's what I've been trying to tell you.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.
"I'm leaving.""
Marcus stepped in front of the doorway.
"You're not going anywhere until we understand what's happened.""
"Move!""
"No.""
She looked at him with an expression he had never seen before.
Pure hatred.
Then she whispered something that made Marcus's blood run cold.
"Ask your mother what she promised Laura the night before she died.""
Evelyn's face changed.
For the first time that evening, her calm expression disappeared.
Marcus turned toward her.
"Mom?""
Evelyn slowly lowered herself into the nearest chair.
May you like
And she said three words.
"She made me promise.""
