Chapter 7: The Nurse Who Disappeared
The message arrived at 6:42 on a Thursday morning.
*They know about the babies. You need to disappear before they find you.*
Patricia Moore read it three times before lowering her phone.
She was standing in her kitchen, wearing an old blue cardigan and holding a mug of coffee. Outside, a delivery truck rumbled down the quiet suburban street.
For fourteen years, she had convinced herself that the secret would remain buried.
Now someone knew.
Someone was watching her.
She walked to the bedroom, opened the bottom drawer of her dresser, and removed a small leather case.
Inside were two hospital identification bracelets, a photograph, and a folded letter.
She picked up the photograph.
It showed two newborn boys.
One had been born to Laura Mitchell.
The other had been born to Caroline Bell.
And the woman who had switched their hospital identification bracelets had been Patricia herself.
She had done it under pressure.
She had done it because someone threatened her family.
But she had never forgotten the faces of the two mothers.
And she had never forgotten what Laura whispered to her afterward.
"Please, Patricia. Whatever happens, don't let them take my son.""
Patricia placed the photograph inside her handbag.
Then she called Evelyn.
At the Mitchell estate, Marcus was standing in the kitchen when his mother's phone rang.
Evelyn answered immediately.
"Patricia?""
The voice on the other end was shaking.
"I need to see you.""
"What's happened?""
"They know.""
Evelyn's face tightened.
"Who knows?""
"Everyone. Vanessa. Caroline. Maybe Arthur's people.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Put her on speaker.""
Evelyn did.
"Patricia, this is Marcus.""
There was a pause.
Then Patricia whispered, "I'm sorry.""
Marcus gripped the counter.
"Sorry for what?""
"For what happened fourteen years ago.""
"Did you switch the babies?""
Silence.
Then Patricia said, "Yes.""
Jordan was sitting at the kitchen island, eating cereal.
He stopped moving his spoon.
Marcus glanced toward him.
"Jordan, sweetheart, why don't you go upstairs for a little while?""
Jordan looked at his father.
"Is it about me?""
Marcus didn't lie.
"Yes, but we'll talk about it together.""
Jordan slowly climbed down from the stool.
He walked toward the staircase, then turned around.
"Please don't let anyone take me.""
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
"Nobody is taking you anywhere.""
When Jordan disappeared upstairs, Marcus returned to the phone.
"Patricia, I need the truth. Why did you switch them?""
Patricia began crying.
"Because Arthur Bell threatened me.""
"What did he threaten?""
"My daughter.""
Marcus went still.
"Your daughter?""
"She was seventeen. She was driving home from work one evening when a car forced her off the road. She survived, but Arthur made sure I understood that the next accident might be worse.""
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Patricia continued.
"He came to the hospital with Vanessa. They told me Caroline's baby needed to be protected from a scandal. They said the Mitchell family would destroy Caroline if the affair became public.""
Marcus shook his head.
"So you gave Caroline's baby to Laura?""
"No.""
The answer came quickly.
Marcus frowned.
"What?""
"I didn't give Caroline's baby to Laura. I switched the identification bracelets.""
Marcus stared at the phone.
"Explain.""
Patricia took a trembling breath.
"Both mothers had given birth to boys. Arthur wanted everyone to believe that Richard's biological child was Caroline's baby. He intended to use that claim to obtain a share of the Mitchell estate.""
"Then what happened?""
"Laura discovered the plan.""
Evelyn leaned forward.
"Patricia, tell him what Laura did.""
Patricia was quiet for a moment.
Then she said, "Laura came to me the night before the final paperwork was processed. She had already discovered that Arthur was trying to change the records.""
Marcus's voice cracked.
"What did she ask you to do?""
"She asked me to restore the correct identification.""
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Patricia continued.
"I did. I put the original bracelets back where they belonged before the final hospital registration was completed.""
Marcus felt his knees weaken.
"So Jordan is...""
"Laura's biological son," Patricia said.
"And Caroline's child?""
"Daniel Bell. He was never raised by Laura.""
Evelyn exhaled sharply.
Marcus held the counter.
"Then why did you keep the second set of bracelets?""
"Because Arthur's people made me keep quiet. They told me the records would be changed again if I spoke.""
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
"Does Vanessa know?""
Patricia hesitated.
"Vanessa knows there were two babies. She doesn't know that Laura corrected the switch.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Can you prove it?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
"I kept the original delivery records, the handwritten corrections, and a recording of Arthur speaking to me.""
Evelyn nearly dropped her phone.
"You have a recording?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell us?""
"Because Arthur threatened my daughter. And after he died, someone continued making payments to keep me silent.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Who?""
Patricia whispered, "Vanessa.""
Two hours later, Patricia arrived at the estate with a small suitcase.
She looked exhausted.
Marcus met her at the front door.
"Thank you for coming.""
Patricia nodded.
"I should have come years ago.""
Evelyn hugged her.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Then Marcus led Patricia into the study.
Helen Carter was already waiting.
A forensic document examiner had joined her.
On the desk lay the two wristbands, the old photograph, and the hospital paperwork.
Patricia placed her leather case beside them.
"I want to make a formal statement.""
Helen nodded.
"Take your time.""
Patricia opened the case.
She removed the original identification bracelets.
One read:
*Baby Mitchell — Laura Mitchell — 11:42 p.m.*
The other read:
*Baby Bell — Caroline Bell — 2:16 a.m.*
Marcus stared at the times.
"Jordan was born first?""
"Yes," Patricia replied.
"And Daniel?""
"Three hours later.""
Patricia produced a handwritten hospital record.
It showed that both boys had been correctly identified before discharge.
Then she removed a second document.
This one contained a correction.
The correction had been made in different handwriting.
And the date was two days after the births.
Helen examined it.
"Who made this alteration?""
Patricia pointed to a signature.
"Arthur Bell.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"How could he change hospital records?""
"He couldn't officially. But he had connections with a hospital administrator.""
Helen photographed the document.
"Do you have proof of that connection?""
Patricia nodded.
She placed a small digital recorder on the desk.
"I recorded Arthur when he came to my house.""
Marcus stared.
"What did he say?""
Patricia pressed play.
A man's voice filled the study.
"Patricia, you have a daughter. I have people who can make her life very difficult.""
A woman's voice answered.
"I already corrected the records. Laura knows the truth.""
The man laughed.
"Laura knows nothing.""
"She knows enough.""
"Then you should hope she keeps quiet.""
The recording continued.
Then Arthur said something that made Marcus's blood run cold.
"The Mitchell fortune belongs to my son. Richard promised me that before he died.""
Patricia's voice trembled.
"What does that have to do with the babies?""
Arthur answered:
"Everything. If Caroline's boy is recognized as Richard's child, the family trust becomes vulnerable. And once that happens, my son gets what he deserves.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Helen slowly removed her glasses.
"That is significant evidence.""
Marcus looked at Patricia.
"Did Arthur ever explain why he believed Richard's son was entitled to the fortune?""
Patricia shook her head.
"No. But he said Richard had signed something.""
Evelyn frowned.
"Richard never signed anything giving Arthur's child a share of his estate.""
Patricia reached into her suitcase.
"Then perhaps you should see this.""
She handed Evelyn a sealed envelope.
The handwriting on the front belonged to Richard.
*For Evelyn. Only if Arthur attempts to claim the family trust.*
Evelyn's hands trembled.
She opened it.
Inside was a short letter and a photocopy of an agreement.
Richard had written that Arthur had once threatened to expose the affair unless Richard transferred a portion of his business interests to him.
Richard had refused.
But he had included one strange condition.
If any person attempted to claim the Mitchell family fortune through a disputed biological relationship, the original trust agreement would be reviewed by an independent trustee.
Marcus read the final paragraph.
Then he looked at Helen.
"Can this stop Caroline's claim?""
"It can certainly challenge it.""
Evelyn looked at the letter.
"There is another problem.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
"Arthur's agreement names a second beneficiary.""
Helen examined the page.
Her expression changed.
The second beneficiary was not Caroline.
It was Vanessa.
Marcus stared at the name.
"Why would Vanessa be listed?""
Patricia looked toward the window.
"Because Arthur promised her a share if she helped him secure the inheritance.""
Marcus slowly sat down.
Everything was connected.
The rent.
The forged signatures.
The stolen money.
The hospital records.
Vanessa had not married him simply to become part of his family.
She had married him to gain access to a fortune she believed belonged to Arthur's son.
But the worst part was still waiting.
Helen turned over the agreement.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
*If the first plan fails, use the second child.*
Marcus frowned.
"What's that supposed to mean?""
Patricia went pale.
"Arthur had another plan.""
"What plan?""
Patricia looked directly at Marcus.
"He wanted to make sure that even if Jordan's identity was proven, Caroline's son could still inherit.""
Evelyn gripped the edge of the desk.
"How?""
Patricia's voice dropped.
"By making Daniel disappear from the official records.""
That evening, Marcus went upstairs to check on Jordan.
The boy was sitting on his bed, drawing two houses.
One was large, with a garden and a tree.
The other was small, with a single window.
Marcus sat beside him.
"What are you drawing?""
"Two places.""
"Why?""
Jordan shrugged.
"Because I don't know where I belong.""
Marcus placed the paper aside.
"You belong here.""
Jordan looked at him.
"Even if I'm not related to Grandpa?""
Marcus smiled sadly.
"You're related to me. That's enough.""
"But what if Vanessa says I'm not?""
Marcus held his son's shoulders.
"Then Vanessa is wrong.""
Jordan studied his face.
"Are you sure?""
"Absolutely.""
The boy nodded.
Then he leaned against his father.
Marcus stayed with him until the house grew quiet.
Downstairs, his phone vibrated.
Helen had sent a message.
*We have a problem. Caroline Bell has filed an emergency petition seeking temporary custody of Jordan based on the hospital records. The hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning.*
A second message arrived.
*And she has submitted a new DNA report.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*The report claims Jordan is biologically related to Caroline.*
Marcus looked toward his son's bedroom.
May you like
The case was no longer just about money.
Someone was trying to take his child.
