Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Fake Family
When I arrived home, Ethan was standing in the living room.
Vanessa sat on the sofa, her arms folded tightly across her chest.
My mother stood near the fireplace.
Chloe was beside the dining table.
The atmosphere felt less like a family gathering and more like a courtroom where everyone had already decided who was guilty.
Ethan turned when I entered.
"Good. You're here.""
I closed the door.
"Say what you came to say.""
He held up his phone.
"I have the truth about Oliver.""
Vanessa stood immediately.
"Don't you dare.""
Ethan ignored her.
"Daniel, you've been asking everyone about the baby's father. You deserve to know.""
I stepped closer.
"Then tell me.""
Ethan opened a photograph on his phone.
It showed a calendar with several dates circled.
"Vanessa told me she was pregnant in January.""
I nodded.
"That's what she told me.""
"But she didn't tell me everything.""
He swiped to another image.
It was a screenshot of a message conversation.
Vanessa had written:
I need you to come over tonight. I think I'm pregnant.
Ethan replied:
We were together last week. How could you already know?
Vanessa:
I took a test. It's positive.
Ethan:
Then we need to figure out what we're doing.
The message date was January seventeenth.
I looked at him.
"What does this prove?""
Ethan zoomed in on another message.
I'm not sure you're the father.
My eyes moved across the screen.
Then I looked up.
"What?""
Ethan nodded.
"She told me there was a chance the baby wasn't mine.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You're twisting everything!""
Ethan turned toward her.
"Am I?""
He showed me another screenshot.
This one was dated several days later.
Vanessa:
I need you to stay quiet until I know.
Ethan:
Who else have you been with?
Vanessa:
It doesn't matter.
Ethan:
It matters if I'm going to raise another man's child.
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Why didn't you tell me this before?""
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"Because I thought the baby was mine.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You knew we had been together.""
"Yes. But you never told me about Marcus.""
The room went silent.
My mother looked at me.
Chloe lowered her eyes.
I stared at Vanessa.
"Did you tell Ethan about Marcus?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
Ethan laughed.
"Of course she didn't.""
Vanessa suddenly pointed at him.
"You're the one who abandoned me!""
"You told me I was the father!""
"I believed you were!""
"You said you weren't sure!""
I stepped between them.
"Enough.""
They both fell silent.
I looked at Ethan.
"Why are you telling me this now?""
He hesitated.
Then he lowered his phone.
"Because I want you to understand that I didn't plan everything.""
I stared at him.
"You planned enough.""
"I know.""
"You forged my signature.""
He looked down.
"Yes.""
"You stole from the company.""
"I was going to pay it back.""
"You manipulated Lily.""
His face tightened.
"I care about her.""
"That isn't an answer.""
He looked at me.
"I wanted a family.""
I shook my head.
"You wanted mine.""
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then Vanessa began laughing.
It was a strange, broken sound.
"You're both pretending to be victims.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
She stood in the middle of the room.
"Ethan wanted me to leave Daniel. Marcus wanted me to keep quiet. Daniel wanted me to be the perfect wife who stayed home and smiled.""
I stared at her.
"Don't.""
She continued.
"Everyone wanted something from me. Nobody cared what I wanted.""
I stepped forward.
"Then why didn't you leave?""
She looked at me.
"Because I loved the life we had.""
I laughed.
"You loved the house. The money. The security.""
"I loved you too!""
"Then why did you destroy everything?""
She began crying.
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of being alone.""
I stared at her.
"You were never alone. You had a husband and a daughter who adored you.""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"And I had a man who worked all day and came home exhausted.""
I shook my head.
"We're not doing this again.""
She looked toward the stairs.
"Lily needs her mother.""
I felt my anger rise.
"Then start acting like one.""
Vanessa flinched.
My mother stepped forward.
"Please. Not in front of the children.""
I looked at her.
"Where is Lily?""
"Upstairs.""
"Keep her there.""
Then I turned back to Ethan.
"Give me the phone.""
He hesitated.
"Why?""
"Because I want copies of those messages for the investigation.""
He handed it over.
I photographed every screenshot.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you have a relationship with Marcus?""
She stared at me.
For several seconds, I thought she would deny it.
Then she nodded.
"Yes.""
"Was he the other possible father?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you ever have a DNA test?""
She shook her head.
"Why not?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of the result?""
She nodded.
I looked at Ethan.
"And you knew there was a possibility Oliver wasn't yours?""
"Yes.""
"Yet you still signed the paperwork?""
He looked away.
"I thought if I claimed him, Vanessa would stay with me.""
The room became silent.
I stared at him.
"So you both wanted to use a child to get what you wanted.""
Neither answered.
I took my phone out and called Laura.
"I need you to document another admission. Ethan has acknowledged signing documents relating to Oliver despite uncertainty about paternity.""
Laura told me to preserve the conversation and not make threats or promises.
I ended the call.
Then I turned toward Vanessa.
"You're going to stay away from Lily until the custody arrangements are properly established.""
Her face changed.
"You can't keep my daughter from me.""
"I'm not making a permanent decision tonight. But I'm not allowing you to take her anywhere while everything is being investigated.""
"You can't do that!""
"Watch me.""
She began shouting.
My mother tried to calm her.
Chloe moved toward the stairs.
And Ethan quietly slipped his phone into his pocket.
I noticed.
"Where are you going?""
He froze.
"Home.""
"Not yet.""
He laughed.
"You don't control me.""
"No. But the police may want to speak to you.""
His expression changed.
"Daniel, don't do this.""
I stared at him.
"You've been saying that all day.""
He shook his head.
"You're going to destroy your own family.""
I stepped closer.
"You already did.""
Ethan left.
Vanessa followed him to the door.
For one strange second, I thought she might run after him.
Instead, she turned back.
"Daniel, I need to tell you something.""
I waited.
She looked toward the stairs.
"There's a reason I never wanted you at the prenatal appointments.""
I stared at her.
"Because you weren't pregnant?""
She shook her head.
"Not just that.""
She took a breath.
"When I was carrying Oliver, the doctors asked me to provide a complete medical history. They wanted information about genetic conditions in both families.""
"And?""
She looked at me.
"They discovered that the condition Oliver might have inherited wasn't connected to Ethan's family.""
I frowned.
"What was it connected to?""
She began crying.
"Your family.""
I felt my heart stop.
"What?""
Vanessa nodded.
"That's why I wanted your name on the paperwork.""
I stared at her.
"You're telling me Oliver might have inherited something from my side of the family?""
"Yes.""
I couldn't understand.
"How would that happen if Ethan or Marcus is the father?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I stared at her.
"Then why did you keep insisting I was the father?""
She looked away.
"Because I thought if you believed he was yours, you would take him in.""
I stepped backward.
She was still trying to manipulate me.
Even now.
I turned toward the stairs.
"Where are the original medical records?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"In my handbag.""
"Get them.""
She disappeared upstairs.
I waited.
A minute passed.
Then another.
Finally, she returned holding a thick brown envelope.
She handed it to me.
I opened it.
There were appointment summaries, blood test results, and genetic counseling notes.
Most of the medical language was difficult to follow.
But one page caught my attention.
It listed a family history of an inherited condition.
Beside the patient's information was Vanessa's name.
Under family history, someone had written:
Biological father of previous child: Daniel Brooks.
I frowned.
I read it again.
Previous child?
I looked at Vanessa.
"What previous child?""
Her face turned white.
She reached for the paper.
I pulled it away.
"Answer me.""
She began crying.
"Daniel, that was before Lily.""
I stared at her.
"Before Lily?""
She nodded.
"You told me you had never been pregnant before our daughter.""
"I know.""
I looked down at the report.
The date was from eight years earlier.
Two years before our wedding.
Before Lily.
Before Ethan.
Before everything.
"Who was the child?""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"I didn't raise him.""
I felt my legs weaken.
"Did you have a child before we met?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She cried harder.
"Because I thought you'd leave.""
"Where is he?""
She looked at the floor.
"I don't know.""
"Vanessa!""
She finally whispered:
"His name is Noah.""
I stared at the document.
A child I had never known existed.
A child Vanessa claimed had been born before our marriage.
And somehow, my name appeared in the medical history.
I felt sick.
"Are you telling me I'm his father?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Then why is my name there?""
She opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, Chloe spoke from the kitchen doorway.
"Because Vanessa used your information when she gave birth.""
I turned.
Chloe looked terrified.
"She told the hospital that you were the father, even though you weren't married yet.""
I stared at her.
"How would she know I wasn't?""
Chloe lowered her eyes.
"Because she told me the real father was someone else.""
I felt the room closing in.
"Who?""
Chloe looked at Vanessa.
Then she whispered:
"Marcus.""
I turned toward the medical report.
The name of my business partner appeared again.
But this time, it wasn't just a possible father.
It was a child born eight years earlier.
A child who might have been connected to the same man.
And a secret Vanessa had hidden before our marriage even began.
I looked at her.
"Where is Noah now?""
Vanessa began sobbing.
Then she said something that made my entire body go cold.
"He's been living with someone who knows exactly who you are.""
I stared at her.
"Who?""
She looked toward the front door.
And just as she was about to answer, my phone rang.
It was Laura.
"Daniel, we've received an update from the hospital.""
I closed my eyes.
"What now?""
"The DNA results from the preliminary testing are ready.""
My heart began pounding.
"Whose results?""
"Oliver's.""
I looked at Vanessa.
Laura continued.
"And there's a serious problem with the father information currently listed on his birth certificate.""
"What problem?""
She paused.
"Daniel, the test has excluded Ethan. It has also excluded Marcus.""
I gripped the phone.
"Then who is the father?""
Laura took a breath.
"The results indicate that Oliver's biological father is someone whose name you haven't mentioned to me.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"Who?""
Laura answered.
"Your wife's former employer, Richard Hale.""
I felt the world go silent.
Richard Hale.
The man who had hired Vanessa at the medical billing company where she worked before Lily was born.
The man who had attended our wedding reception.
The man who had once congratulated me on becoming a father.
And the man who had died eighteen months earlier.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Vanessa was crying.
I stared at her.
"How long?""
She covered her face.
May you like
And then she whispered:
"Before I ever met Ethan.""
