Chapter 2: The Baby Nobody Was Supposed to See
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The name on the document seemed to blur.
Ethan Cole.
My brother.
My only brother.
He was thirty-two, unmarried, and had been living in Boston for the past three years. He worked in commercial real estate and visited us occasionally, usually bringing expensive wine and making jokes about how I had become an old married man.
He had attended our wedding.
He had held Lily when she was born.
He had stood beside me at our father's funeral.
And now his name was printed beside my wife's on a birth certificate.
I looked up.
"Rachel, what is this?""
She swallowed.
"It's exactly what it looks like.""
"That's impossible.""
"I wish it were.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
She was standing near the fireplace, gripping the edge of the mantelpiece.
Her pink dress suddenly looked ridiculous.
The balloons, the cake, the gifts, the carefully arranged flowers—all of it seemed like a stage built for a performance that had just ended.
"Vanessa," I said.
She shook her head.
"Daniel, don't listen to her.""
Rachel gave a bitter laugh.
"You're still doing that? Even now?""
Vanessa pointed toward the door.
"Get out!""
Rachel looked down at the baby.
The infant had begun stirring beneath the blue blanket.
"I drove two hours with a newborn because you refused to answer my calls. You don't get to tell me to leave.""
My mother stepped forward.
"Young lady, please explain what's happening.""
Rachel nodded.
"My name is Rachel Morgan. I work as a maternity nurse at St. Mary's Medical Center. I met Vanessa about nine months ago.""
Vanessa interrupted.
"She's lying. She's obsessed with me.""
Rachel didn't even look at her.
"Vanessa came to the hospital last winter. She was already pregnant, and she was terrified.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Rachel continued.
"She told me she couldn't let her husband discover the pregnancy. She said the father was someone close to the family and that the situation would destroy her marriage.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Someone close to the family?""
She said nothing.
Rachel adjusted the blanket around the baby's feet.
"I didn't know who she was talking about at first. I only knew she was desperate. She cried during every appointment. She begged the staff not to contact her husband.""
Chloe stepped closer.
"Wait. You were involved in her prenatal care?""
Rachel nodded.
"I was one of the nurses assigned to her case.""
Vanessa's voice cracked.
"That doesn't give you the right to come here!""
Rachel finally turned toward her.
"You gave me the right when you asked me to help you hide your own child.""
The word child hit me harder than the name on the birth certificate.
I stared at the car seat.
The baby couldn't have been more than a few weeks old.
"How old is he?"" I asked.
"Three weeks," Rachel answered.
Three weeks.
Vanessa had been hosting pregnancy celebrations while her newborn son was already alive.
I looked around the living room.
The baby shower decorations seemed to mock me.
"Why?"" I whispered.
Vanessa started crying.
"Daniel, please.""
"Why is there a baby with my brother's name on his birth certificate?""
She pressed both hands against her face.
"I made a mistake.""
I laughed once.
It was a strange, empty sound.
"A mistake? You made a whole human being with my brother.""
My mother covered her mouth.
Chloe sat down.
Lily, still in my mother's arms, looked between the adults.
"Daddy?""
I turned immediately.
"Go upstairs with Grandma, sweetheart.""
"But—"
"Please, Lily.""
My mother carried her away.
I waited until I heard the bedroom door close.
Then I turned back to Rachel.
"Tell me everything.""
Rachel hesitated.
"Daniel, there are things you should hear from Vanessa.""
"I've given her enough opportunities.""
Vanessa stepped toward me.
"I never wanted this to happen.""
"Then tell me how it happened.""
She looked at the floor.
"It started last year.""
I waited.
"After Ethan came back from Boston, he began visiting more often. We were all together during the holidays. You were working late, and sometimes he stayed after dinner.""
I remembered those evenings.
Ethan joking with Lily.
Ethan helping Vanessa carry groceries.
Ethan sitting in our kitchen after I had gone upstairs.
Ordinary moments.
Moments I had never questioned.
Vanessa continued.
"One night, you had an important meeting in New York. Ethan came over to help me fix the kitchen sink. We had wine. We talked.""
"Get to the point.""
Her shoulders trembled.
"We slept together.""
My jaw tightened.
"Once?""
She looked at me.
I knew the answer before she spoke.
"No.""
The room seemed to tilt.
"How many times?""
"I don't know.""
"How many times, Vanessa?""
She began sobbing.
"Several.""
Rachel looked away.
I stared at my wife.
For six years, I had believed she was the one person who would never betray me.
And she had invited my brother into our home while I was away.
"Did you love him?""
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
"No. It wasn't like that.""
"Then what was it?""
"I was lonely.""
I almost laughed again.
"You were lonely? I was working to support our family. I was raising our daughter. I was building a life with you.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Ethan made me feel different. He paid attention to me. He told me I was beautiful. He said you took me for granted.""
I stared at her.
"And you believed him?""
She didn't answer.
Rachel shifted the car seat slightly.
"The baby was born on October thirteenth.""
Vanessa looked sharply at her.
"Don't.""
Rachel continued.
"She had a difficult delivery. The baby needed monitoring for a few days, but he was healthy when he left the hospital.""
I looked at the birth certificate again.
October thirteenth.
I mentally counted backward.
That was nearly nine months after the night Vanessa claimed her pregnancy began.
The timing was possible.
Everything was suddenly possible.
"Why did you tell everyone you were pregnant with my child?"" I asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
"I thought I could fix it.""
"Fix what?""
"Everything.""
She stepped closer.
"When I found out I was pregnant, I panicked. Ethan told me he didn't want to be involved. He said it would destroy his career and his relationship with the family.""
"Of course he did.""
"He said we should handle it privately.""
"Privately?""
Vanessa nodded.
"I thought about ending the pregnancy, but I couldn't. Then I thought about adoption, but I couldn't do that either.""
Rachel's expression hardened.
"That's not what you told me.""
Vanessa glared at her.
"Stay out of this.""
Rachel shook her head.
"You told me you wanted to raise the baby. You said you just needed time to convince your husband that the child belonged in your family.""
I felt cold.
"Convince me?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"I thought if I told you the truth after the baby was born, you'd eventually accept him.""
I took a step backward.
"You planned to bring your brother-in-law's baby into my house and let me believe he was mine?""
She started crying harder.
"I didn't know what else to do.""
Rachel opened the diaper bag again.
"There's something else.""
She pulled out a small envelope.
"Vanessa asked me to keep this safe until she was ready.""
She handed it to me.
Inside was a hospital bracelet.
The name printed on it was:
BABY BOY BROOKS.
Below it was a date and a patient identification number.
I turned the bracelet over.
A handwritten note had been attached.
Please don't let Daniel find out. I need more time.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You wrote this?""
She nodded faintly.
"Why did Rachel have it?""
Vanessa stared at the floor.
Rachel answered.
"Because Vanessa wanted me to help arrange a private handover. She said the baby would eventually live here, but she needed to make sure you believed the pregnancy had gone normally.""
I looked at the fake baby shower.
The oversized cake.
The gifts.
The decorations.
The carefully rounded stomach.
"How did you fake the pregnancy?""
Vanessa flinched.
Rachel answered again.
"She used a silicone pregnancy prosthetic beneath her clothes. It was custom-made. She wore it to family gatherings and posted photographs online.""
I remembered the pictures.
Vanessa standing in front of the bathroom mirror.
Vanessa holding her stomach.
Vanessa smiling beside a sign announcing that our family was growing.
Thousands of likes.
Dozens of congratulatory messages.
And all of it had been a lie.
"Where is Ethan?"" I asked.
Vanessa said nothing.
"Where is my brother?""
Rachel glanced toward the front window.
"I don't know. He was supposed to come here today.""
I froze.
"What?""
Rachel nodded.
"Vanessa told me Ethan would attend the baby shower. She said he wanted to see the baby before everything was revealed.""
I looked at my wife.
"Is that true?""
Vanessa wiped her nose.
"He was supposed to come.""
"Why?""
"Because I wanted us to talk.""
"About what?""
She didn't answer.
Rachel reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.
"I have something you need to see.""
She unlocked it and showed me a message conversation.
The first message was from Vanessa.
Daniel still believes everything. The shower is Saturday. Bring the baby after the guests arrive.
The response came from Ethan.
Are you insane? I told you I don't want to be involved.
Vanessa had replied:
You don't get to walk away. He's your son.
Then Ethan wrote:
If you tell Daniel, I'm telling him everything.
I read the messages twice.
"Everything?"" I asked.
Rachel nodded.
"There were more.""
She scrolled down.
A message from Vanessa appeared.
You promised me we would have a future together.
Ethan's reply was short.
I promised nothing.
I handed the phone back.
The betrayal was worse than I had imagined.
My brother hadn't simply made a terrible mistake.
He had abandoned the woman carrying his child, leaving her to invent an entire pregnancy to protect herself.
But something still didn't make sense.
I looked at Rachel.
"Why did you bring the baby here?""
She lowered her voice.
"Because Vanessa called me yesterday.""
"What did she say?""
"She told me she had changed her mind. She wanted me to bring the baby to the house during the shower and help her explain everything.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"You invited her?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why did you act surprised?""
She began shaking her head.
"Because I didn't know she'd actually come.""
Rachel frowned.
"That's not true.""
She opened another message.
It was sent that morning.
Don't come. I changed my mind. If you show up, I'll tell everyone you stole the baby.
Rachel looked at me.
"That's when I decided I wasn't going to let her keep using this child as a bargaining chip.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"You threatened to accuse her of kidnapping your own son?""
Vanessa didn't respond.
Then Lily's little voice came from the staircase.
"Mommy?""
Everyone turned.
She stood halfway down the stairs, holding her stuffed rabbit.
My mother was nowhere behind her.
Lily looked at the infant.
"Is that the baby Mommy said was in her tummy?""
I walked toward her.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
She looked at Vanessa.
Then she asked the question that made my wife cover her mouth.
"Why did Mommy tell me not to tell you?""
Vanessa began crying.
For the first time that afternoon, she seemed unable to defend herself.
I carried Lily upstairs and tucked her into bed.
When I returned, Rachel was standing beside the dining table.
The baby had begun crying.
She gently lifted him from the car seat and held him against her shoulder.
I looked at the little boy.
He had dark hair, a tiny nose, and tightly closed fists.
He was innocent.
He hadn't asked to be born into a lie.
I walked closer.
"What's his name?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Vanessa named him Oliver.""
I looked at the baby.
"Oliver Brooks?""
Rachel nodded.
"That's the name on his hospital records.""
I reached toward his tiny hand.
His fingers wrapped around mine.
And something inside me broke.
Not because I believed he was my son.
But because I knew he was family, whether I wanted that reality or not.
Then Rachel said something that changed everything again.
"Daniel, there's another reason I came here.""
I looked at her.
"What now?""
She glanced toward Vanessa.
"Your wife didn't fake just one pregnancy.""
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
"What do you mean?""
Rachel swallowed.
"She told the hospital staff that she had experienced a previous pregnancy loss.""
I frowned.
Vanessa had never told me that.
Rachel continued.
"She said she had lost a baby before becoming pregnant with Oliver. But when I checked the information she provided, something didn't match.""
"What didn't match?""
Rachel looked at me.
"The dates.""
Then she pulled out another document.
May you like
"This pregnancy wasn't her first attempt to deceive you.""
And as I read the date printed at the top, I realized the lie had begun much earlier than I ever imagined.
