Chapter 3: The Secret That Started Before the Baby Shower

The document in Rachel's hand was a photocopy of a medical discharge summary.

I recognized the hospital logo immediately.

St. Mary's Medical Center.

But the date was almost two years old.

I read the first paragraph.

Then I read it again.

It described a patient named Vanessa Brooks who had presented at the emergency department following abdominal pain and bleeding.

The diagnosis section mentioned a suspected early pregnancy loss.

My throat tightened.

"Vanessa?""

She looked away.

Rachel placed the document on the table.

"She told the hospital that she had suffered a miscarriage.""

I looked at my wife.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

"Because I knew you'd be upset.""

"Upset?""

I pointed at the paper.

"You were pregnant two years ago?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Was it mine?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel, please.""

"Was it mine?""

She didn't answer.

I looked at Rachel.

"How does this involve you?""

Rachel adjusted Oliver against her shoulder.

"Vanessa came back to the hospital several months after that incident. She was receiving prenatal care during her latest pregnancy. I recognized her name and remembered the earlier admission.""

I stared at the document.

Rachel continued carefully.

"I wasn't involved in the earlier treatment, and I didn't have access to every detail. But Vanessa told me what happened.""

"What did she tell you?""

"She said she had been pregnant by Ethan before. She said the first pregnancy ended very early, and that she never told you because she was afraid of losing her marriage.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Another pregnancy.

Another betrayal.

And this one had happened nearly two years earlier.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"How long?""

She shook her head.

"Daniel, I can explain.""

"How long were you sleeping with him?""

Her voice was barely audible.

"Since before the first pregnancy.""

I gripped the back of a chair.

"How long before?""

"About a year.""

A year.

My brother had been sleeping with my wife for a year before I discovered the first pregnancy.

I remembered that period.

I remembered working long hours to secure a promotion. I remembered Vanessa complaining that I was never home. I remembered Ethan calling frequently, asking whether he could stop by to see Lily.

I remembered trusting both of them.

I remembered my brother standing in my kitchen, drinking coffee, while I thanked him for helping my wife.

My hands began trembling.

"Did you ever think about what you were doing to me?""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"I was confused.""

"That's not an answer.""

"I didn't plan to fall in love with him.""

"You just accidentally slept with him for a year?""

She covered her face.

"Please don't talk to me like that.""

I stared at her.

"How would you like me to talk to you?""

Rachel quietly moved toward the hallway.

"Daniel, I think I should take Oliver somewhere quiet.""

I nodded.

"Please.""

But before she could leave, Vanessa stepped toward her.

"You're not taking my son anywhere.""

Rachel stopped.

"Vanessa, I'm not taking him away from you. I'm keeping him safe.""

"He's mine!""

"Then act like his mother.""

Vanessa looked as though she might strike her.

I moved between them.

"Don't.""

She froze.

I had never spoken to her like that before.

Not once in six years.

But I no longer recognized the woman standing in front of me.

Rachel took Oliver into the adjoining guest room.

The baby's cries gradually faded.

I remained in the living room with Vanessa.

Outside, a light rain began tapping against the windows.

The party decorations swayed gently whenever the heating system came on.

The cake was still untouched.

A silver gift bag sat beside the fireplace, its tissue paper spilling over the top.

I looked at the sign above the mantel.

WELCOME, BABY BROOKS!

I reached up and pulled it down.

Vanessa watched me.

"Daniel, please don't do this.""

I folded the sign in half.

"What exactly do you want me to do?""

"I want you to listen.""

"I've been listening for six years.""

She began pacing.

"I was unhappy. You were always working. You didn't notice how lonely I was.""

I looked at her.

"Do you know what I was doing when you were lonely?""

She shook her head.

"I was building the company that pays for this house. I was making sure Lily had everything she needed. I was trying to give you the life you told me you wanted.""

"I never asked you to work that much.""

"You asked me to provide for our family.""

She stopped pacing.

"I didn't know how to tell you.""

"You had two years to tell me.""

She looked toward the guest room.

Then she said something that made me even angrier.

"I thought Oliver would bring us back together.""

I stared at her.

"How?""

"If you held him, if you saw him, maybe you'd realize he was innocent. Maybe you'd love him enough to forgive me.""

I felt sick.

"You planned to use a newborn baby to make me forgive an affair with my brother?""

"He is your family!""

"He is an innocent child. Don't confuse that with what you've done.""

Vanessa started crying again.

I walked toward the window.

I needed a moment away from her.

But the memories kept coming.

The first ultrasound photographs she had shown me.

The pregnancy announcements.

The conversations about baby names.

The tiny clothes she had supposedly ordered.

The doctor's appointments I had been told not to attend.

I remembered asking whether we could record the baby's heartbeat.

Vanessa had told me the equipment at the clinic wasn't working.

I remembered asking whether she wanted me to build a crib.

She had said it was too early.

I remembered her saying the baby kicked whenever I talked.

Every single memory was contaminated now.

"Did you ever intend to tell me the truth?"" I asked.

Vanessa didn't answer.

I turned around.

"Did you?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"I was going to.""

"When?""

"After the baby shower.""

I stared at her.

She rushed to explain.

"I wanted one last happy memory. I wanted everyone to celebrate. I thought if I could get through today, I could finally tell you.""

"After inviting our family to celebrate a pregnancy that never existed?""

"I didn't know how else to do it.""

I shook my head.

"You could have told me the truth in our bedroom. You could have told me over breakfast. You could have told me before you ordered five hundred dollars' worth of balloons.""

Vanessa sank onto the sofa.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said something quietly.

"There's something else you don't know.""

I closed my eyes.

I was beginning to dread those words.

"What?""

"Ethan wasn't the only person who knew.""

I opened my eyes.

"Who else?""

Vanessa stared at her hands.

"Chloe.""

I frowned.

"Your sister?""

She nodded.

"She knew about Ethan.""

I looked toward the kitchen, where Chloe had been standing earlier.

"Since when?""

"Since the first pregnancy.""

I felt another wave of disbelief.

"Your sister knew you were cheating with my brother?""

"She found out when I was hospitalized.""

"And she said nothing?""

Vanessa started crying harder.

"She told me to end it. She told me to confess. I didn't listen.""

I walked toward the hallway.

"Where is she?""

"Daniel, don't involve her.""

I stopped.

"Why?""

"Because she was trying to protect me.""

I turned slowly.

"She was protecting you from the consequences of betraying your husband?""

Vanessa said nothing.

I found Chloe in the kitchen.

She was standing beside the sink, staring at the rain outside.

When she saw me, her expression changed.

"Daniel.""

I closed the door behind me.

"How long have you known?""

She looked down.

"I was afraid this would happen.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She took a deep breath.

"Almost two years.""

I stared at her.

"You knew about the affair?""

"Yes.""

"And you let me believe everything was normal?""

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

"Vanessa was my sister. I thought I could convince her to end it before it destroyed everyone.""

"Did you know she was pregnant with Ethan's child?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know about Oliver?""

She nodded.

I stepped back.

"So everyone knew except me?""

"Not everyone.""

"Who else?""

Chloe hesitated.

Then she looked toward the front door.

"Ethan.""

I almost laughed.

"Of course he knew. He's the father.""

"No, Daniel. I mean someone else in your family knew.""

I stared at her.

"Who?""

She walked toward me.

"Your mother.""

The words hit me harder than I expected.

"My mother?""

Chloe nodded.

"She found out about the affair six months ago.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

"Vanessa told her because she was afraid Ethan would leave.""

I thought of my mother arriving early that morning.

Her cheerful smile.

Her helping Vanessa arrange the presents.

Her asking about the baby.

Had she known the entire time?

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Chloe swallowed.

"Because she was trying to keep the family together.""

I stared at her.

"By letting me live a lie?""

Chloe reached for my arm.

"Daniel, your mother was terrified. She had already lost your father. She didn't want to lose both her sons.""

I pulled away.

"So she sacrificed me instead?""

Chloe began crying.

"I know how that sounds.""

"It sounds exactly like what happened.""

I opened the kitchen door.

Then I saw my mother standing in the hallway.

She had clearly heard enough.

Her face was pale.

"Daniel," she whispered.

I looked at her.

"Is it true?""

She lowered her eyes.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she nodded.

I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.

"How could you?""

My mother stepped closer.

"Son, please let me explain.""

"Did you know Ethan was sleeping with my wife?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know she was pregnant?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know she was pretending to carry my child?""

My mother began crying.

"Not at first.""

"When did you find out?""

"Six months ago.""

I stared at her.

Six months.

Six months of family dinners.

Six months of phone calls.

Six months of asking me how work was going while knowing my marriage was built on a secret.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

My mother reached for my hand.

"Because I was trying to stop Ethan from making things worse.""

"He's already made things worse!""

"I know.""

"Then why did you protect him?""

She shook her head.

"I wasn't protecting him. I was protecting you.""

I pulled my hand away.

"Don't ever use that excuse again.""

My mother covered her mouth.

I walked past her.

I needed to leave.

I needed to get Lily somewhere safe.

I needed to understand how many people had been involved in the biggest betrayal of my life.

But as I reached the living room, Rachel came out of the guest room.

She was holding Oliver.

The baby was sleeping peacefully.

"Daniel?""

I stopped.

She looked worried.

"I found something in the diaper bag.""

"What?""

She held up a small white envelope.

"It was tucked beneath his medical records. Vanessa asked me to keep it with him, but I don't think she expected me to open it.""

I stared at the envelope.

"What's inside?""

Rachel hesitated.

"Something from Ethan.""

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

Inside was a folded letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

I had seen it on birthday cards, Christmas presents, and notes my brother used to leave on the kitchen counter.

I unfolded the paper.

Vanessa,

I can't keep doing this.

I told you from the beginning that I wasn't going to leave my life behind for you. You knew I wasn't ready to be a father.

You made your choices.

If you bring that child into Daniel's house and pretend he's yours with another man, that's on you.

Don't contact me again.

Ethan.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at the date.

It had been written four days before the baby shower.

I lowered the letter.

"Did Vanessa know he was coming today?""

Rachel nodded.

"She believed he would eventually change his mind.""

I looked at my wife.

She was standing near the fireplace, watching me with desperate eyes.

"You knew he was abandoning you.""

She shook her head.

"I thought he was just angry.""

"Four days ago, he told you he wanted nothing to do with the baby.""

"He didn't mean it.""

"And you still planned to bring Oliver into this house?""

She began crying.

"I had nowhere else to go.""

I stared at her.

"You had a husband.""

She looked down.

For the first time, she seemed to understand what those words meant.

Then my phone vibrated.

An incoming message.

The sender was Ethan.

I opened it.

Daniel, I know what Rachel did. Don't believe everything she tells you. Vanessa isn't innocent, but neither is she telling you the whole story.

A second message appeared immediately.

And whatever you do, don't let her tell you who the baby really is.

I stared at the screen.

The baby.

Ethan's name was on the birth certificate.

Rachel had shown me the hospital bracelet.

Vanessa had admitted the affair.

What else could there possibly be?

Then a third message arrived.

It contained a photograph.

I opened it.

It showed Ethan standing outside a hospital room, holding a newborn baby.

But he wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was another woman.

A woman I recognized immediately.

My mother.

The photograph had been taken on the day Oliver was born.

And on the back of the image, visible in the screenshot, Ethan had written a single sentence:

Mom knows why this baby can never come home with us.

I slowly raised my eyes toward the hallway.

My mother was still standing there.

And for the first time in my life, I wondered whether my brother had been the only person in my family capable of betraying me.

Because whatever happened in that hospital room three weeks ago, my mother had been there.

May you like

And she had kept it from me.

*What had she seen that made her agree to protect the secret?*
